The road toOpen Educational Resources
or...
creating interesting and useful educational materials using openly licensed content
or...
why your students, colleagues, and others around the world will thank you for creating and using openly licensed educational materials
This isnt just about being cool or about the content, its really about the classroom.
Openly Licensed Educational Materials ?
aka:

The difference between: Open Access (OA) and OER.
OA focuses on sharing content, usually of scholarly nature, without a requirement for the use of an Open licenseOER includes any educational content that is shared under an Open license
OER and OA are friends
OA // OER - buddies
OAOER
free, permanent, full-text, online access to scientific and scholarly works
openly licensed educational content
The difference between:Open Course Ware (OCW) and OER.
OCW focuses on sharing open content that is developed specifically to instruct a course
OER includes any educational content that is shared under an open license, whether or not it is a part of a course
OCW is a subset of OER
OCW // OER - overlap
OEROCW
OCW, single images, general campus lectures, image collections, singular learning modules, paper or article
syllabi, lecture notes, presentation slides, assignments, lecture videos - all related to a course
The difference between:eLearning and OER
OER and eLearning: a relationship.
eLearning are electronic instructional resources that are not necessarily Openly licensed.
OER materials are designed to be the physical or electronic building blocks of instructional resources and are always Openly licensed.
eLearning // OER - intersection
OEReLearning
intersection represents open, electronic, instructional resources
Openly Licensed?
comes from the definition...
the OER Definition:
Open educational resources are educational materials and resources offered freely and openly for anyone to use and under some licenses to remix, improve and redistribute.
From the OER Definition:

We'll get to licenses later...

There are many types...
Non-Software Licenses:Creative CommonsGNU Free Documentation License
Software Licenses:GPLApacheBSD
OER *mostly* uses Creative Commons Licenses
Creative Commons

reducing riskOER production typically involves three main policy concerns
main policy concerns
:: copyright : U.S. law grants limited exclusive rights to authors of creative works:: endorsement : avoiding the appearance of endorsing a 3rd party:: privacy : the protection of patient and student privacy
Really though, it's mostly

dealing with issues:: retainment : keeping the content because it is licensed under an Open license or is in the public domain:: replacement : you may want to replace content that is not Openly licensed (and thus not shareable) :: removal : you may need to remove content due to privacy, endorsement or copyright concerns

It's easy, I promise.
Start now by making a small change in how you create your own content.
Mostly:
When possible, use onlyOpenly Licensed (or Public Domain) Content

We help content creators maximize the return on digital resources by helping make these resources free and open for use and reuse by people worldwide.
a student driven do-it-yourself and distributed method of generating OER
Open Source Software used to manage the process of generating OER
The Open.Michigan team can help you make things open so that they can be shared, used, built upon, etc. So that you dont have to worry about infringing and those who use your work know how they can make use of your material.

a bit of background..
Fall 2007, the Medical School commits to publishing all of its pre-clinical materials as OER.
All U-M health science deans pledge their support
In 2007, the Medical School Dean issued a mandate that all pre-clinical materials be made into OER, positioning the University of Michigan as the first Medical School to accomplish this. Deans from Nursing, Pharmacy, Dentistry, and Public Health all pledged their support.
And then from that small first step...
Health OER Disseminates educational materials to educators, physicians, clinicians, students, and self-learners throughout the world, free of charge.
Enables global access to our health science education materials: lectures, labs, and other course curricula.
Improves health education and health care delivery within the University, the State of Michigan, and worldwide.
The University of Michigan Medical School contributes to the Open Educational Resources (OER) effort, which disseminates educational materials to educators, physicians, clinicians, students, and self-learners throughout the world, free of charge. By enabling global access to our health science education materials lectures, labs, and other course curricula through OER, the University of Michigan Medical School is improving health education and health care delivery within the University, the State of Michigan, and worldwide. Through funding from several philanthropic foundations, the University of Michigan Medical School is contributing to this global OER effort and building national and international visibility for the excellence of our educational materials and research.
Not just health-related

This is a really good presentation. Very clear and I like your examples and excel sheet calculations. Thank you for the great lecture.
My teacher did not explain as clear as you did.
Thanks for this video. Very well explained and with examples.
