Welcome to the new “Roar”

Editor’s Note

Hello Key Clubbers, !I’m Aidan Jones, the new newsletter editor for our division. It was essentially by happenstance that I acquired this position. I overheard the president of my club asking if anybody had experience in graphic design and I interrupted. One thing lead to another and now here I am. !Design has been a hobby of mine for a while now. I have digitally designed projects for school and work as well as personal items. I have never designed a newsletter before, though, but I’m sure that I will be able to adapt. This being said, the design of the newsletter might change slightly in the coming months as I determine what works for this project and what doesn’t. I am excited to be able to not only improve my design skills but to bring the local happenings of this club to the masses in a beautiful and simple way. !Usually a Key Club newsletter entails just one month of our division’s happenings, but no newsletters were made from April to October of this year and some events from March were left out. So, I will just attempt to summarize all that has happened in the past eight months and this current month with what people have sent in. Think of it as a time capsule of sorts. !Have a nice November and keep on serving, !

Aidan Jones

Mission ViejoFor the month of March, MVHS key clubbers got down to business and created a beach clean up at Doheny State Beach, Up in the Air at Norman P. Murray Center, and Bunny Days at Oso Viejo Park.

MVHS Key Clubbers take a silly picture as a memory of the March 9th beach clean-up

at Doheny State Beach.

The beach clean up on March 9th began early in the morning and lasted throughout the afternoon, with Key Clubbers scouring the beach for any bits and pieces of trash that needed to be picked up. With bright sunshine and a cool breeze, the beach clean up resulted in a successful and fun meet up while still cleaning up the beach.

Both Up in the Air and Bunny Days were festival like gatherings. Key Clubbers participated in the two-day Up in the Air event by doing things such as helping set up the booths and running them the next day. While Up in the Air showcased things that were related with anything “up in the air”, Bunny Days had things such as game booths, face painting, and egg stations to bring the community together to celebrate the upcoming spring season and Easter.

Last but not least, many of our new members and officers attended the Banquet that was held at the Laguna Woods Club House. It was a new experience seeing both the North and South divisions and being surrounded by other Key Clubbers. It was extremely fun and interesting, especially when people preformed their talent to entertain us, as well as the mini-dance that was held afterwards. The banquet was nice treat after working hard and volunteering.

Overall, March was a great month filled with numerous volunteer opportunities and successful events that ended with the Key Club banquet.

Over Spring Break, Mission Viejo Key Clubbers participated in the Discovery Science Center’s annual Bubblefest, a festival celebrating bubbles through educational activities and shows. This week-long event featured several Mega Bubble Shows, at which bubbles of all shapes and sizes, laser lights, and music were combined into jaw-dropping demonstration leaving kids and their parents alike in awe. Many of our members helped out at the shows as “Bubble Bouncers”, answering any questions and guarding the doors before shows as well as making sure everyone stayed safe and that no one got hurt by keeping control of crowds of children screaming in excitement, eager to make a beeline for the stage as the bubbles began to fly. Bubblefest also featured other events where children could learn about different properties of bubbles, such as surface tension, elasticity, and air pressure. At the Bubble Land station, our Key Clubbers guided kids through various bubble experiments. Others helped children into human-sized inflated “bubbles” in a pool that they then rolled and tumbled in. All in all, Bubblefest was a fun outing during which Mission Viejo’s members go the chance to work and interact with adorable kids and learn a thing or two along the way! !- Alison Chen / Secretary

Once again, Mission’s Key Clubbers have worked hard to aid and support our community, this time by holding a bake sale in order to pitch in and donate the money towards March for Babies. Though this event was held last minute, we all diligently worked together to produce an astounding $263, combining with our division to create a donation of $313! From cookies, to cupcakes, and chocolate covered sweets, we’ve not only raised money, but we’ve spread the word about the purpose of March for Babies. The whole bake sale was filled with high energy and spirits, with Key Clubbers ready to greet the smiling faces of hungry customers. While it was hard work maintaining and running the bake sale stand at Mission Library, we still had a blast, especially since we all knew that it was all for a good cause. With great determination and cheerful attitudes, Key Club has done it again! !- Kaelani Vergara / Historian

On one fine, cold, and misty morning,

several Key Clubbers were ready to begin March of Dimes in Irvine. The money raised during March of Dimes will be used for the research that helps moms and their premature babies. Excitement was in the air, especially with the feeling of other Key Clubbers around you, ready to walk for a great cause. The event was also fun, filled with everything ranging from free hot dogs to a lively carnival, and the spirit of all the Key Clubbers was always present. It was a great and really rewarding experience for all of us. !- Kaelani Vergara / Historian

On Saturday, May 4, a good number of Mission Viejo Key clubbers rose up and early to volunteer at the annual International Festival held at SOKA University. The morning may have started off cold and cloudy but the skies eventually cleared up just in time for us to help people unload and set up their separate booths for the festival. As volunteers, we generally assisted with carrying various items to their designated booths, like interesting pieces of jewelry, a different assortment of clothes that were to be on sale,

and preparing clay stations for the kids. What was really exciting about the whole thing is the fact that it was an International festival. By the end of our shift, we were able to walk around the beautiful campus where a large blend of cultures were being displayed, music was being played, and the aroma of wonderful food wafted through the air. Overall, everyone had a great time during and after volunteering! !- Kaelani Vergara / Historian

June

On Saturday, June 1st, our Key Clubbers woke up nice and early to help out with the Vocational Visions Bowling Tournament for disabled adults. Everyone was given a lane to supervise and was made responsible for recording scores for their bowlers and cheering them on. While some volunteers felt unsure about and unfamiliar with the situation at first, after hearing the cheers, seeing everyone’s excited faces, and getting to know the people in their lane, the atmosphere was much more relaxed and

everyone really had some fun. In the end, all the hard work paid off, and our Key Clubbers completed the whole experience with the feeling that they’d done something wonderful for the community. !- Kaelani Vergara / Historian

July

The vibrant sounds of violins, flutes, and a variety of other instruments filled Pittsford Park on July 28. A large group of volunteers arrived ready to help with the musical playground, which consisted of several booths that held activities children can participate in. In some booths, you can color along with music, make your very own tambourine, ask the orchestra a question, or swing by the musical petting zoo. Either way, the kids had a blast, and they also learned a bit about music and different musicians. The end of the day was topped off with a ‘how-to-be-a-conductor’ training session, and even though they used pencils, everyone enjoyed the little show they put on. Last but not least, is the actual orchestra that performed at seven o’clock. The Pacific Symphony put on quite a show, and attracted a large number of people. !- Kaelani Vergara / Historian

August

August is the last month of summer, and what a better way to end it than gathering out with fellow Key Clubbers? With District 41 North and South combining to create an enthusiastic Key Club group for Beach Boomba. Everyone honored the way of helping others by cleaning up Huntington State Beach. Right after picking up stray containers and other bits and pieces of trash, Key Clubbers had the chance to get to know each other with ice breakers and a bunch of fun activities! With items such as games !

and even a water balloon fight, everyone had a blast. To wrap up the day, a bonfire was started which brought everyone and everything together.  !- Kaelani Vergara / Historian

September

On September 29th, Mission’s Key Clubbers joined together in order to volunteer for the OC Book Fair in Costa Mesa. Bringing smiles and excited attitudes, they tackled the job of manning the lost and found booth, and also had a first aid kit ready just in case anyone needed any patching up. Everything ran smoothly, and they even put their first aid kit to use due to a woman who got stung by a bee. Eileen Vo, the club president, even mentioned

how they calmed her down and everything else was a breeze. Once the day came to a wrap, everyone was satisfied with the all the help they could give, and overall it was a fantastic job for all the Key Clubbers that attended. !- Kaelani Vergara / Historian

On Saturday, November 2, Mission’s Key Clubbers went up to Mission Viejo Library in order to hold a bake sale for PTP. PTP, otherwise known as the Pediatric Trauma Program, provides funding to buy needed medical equipment to treat pediatric trauma while also funding to train pediatric doctors and nurses. Everyone stepped up to the plate in order to create colorful posters, delicious baked goods, and cheerful smiles that Saturday. All of the Key Clubbers who helped run the bake sale had a blast, and even had the chance to welcome new members at this event. The hard work put into the bake sale was completely worth it since the grand total raised for PTP was over two hundred dollars! All of the Key Clubbers did a great job with the fundraiser, and it’s definitely not the last fundraiser that we’ll be doing. !- Kaelani Vergara / Historian

Trabuco HillsBunny Blast was extremely fun for everyone who went. There was a petting zoo, a ferris wheel, and many game booths. The petting zoo had small ducks, cute bunnies, little piggies, and a llama!

Page 19: The Roar / April - November 2013

All the animals were so adorable and the llama was insanely fluffy! The ferris wheel was a huge hit– there was a long line to ride it. At the game booths, everyone was a winner; some left with candy, others with little trinkets or stuffed animals! Bunny Blast was sure a blast for all the people who attended! !- Alyson Piedad / Member

I have been asked copious times, “What is Key Club?”, but I have never been able to answer that question with as much motivation, enthusiasm, and whole-heartedness, until after DCON. The March 22 - 24 weekend spent with our Cali-Nev-Ha District ohana has shown me that even though Key Club is such a great, large organization, we are still close as a family, and every active member plays a vital role in that success. DCON has also confirmed my knowledge that Key Clubbers are the nicest people in the world! I can only wish for this experience once more... !- Bernie Luu

Capistrano ValleyThe annual District Convention, which was held in Anaheim, California, was a fantabulous experience of never ending fun and awesomeness.

From the intense spirit battles, to the Governor's Ball, there was always something that let you meet fellow Key Clubbers from the Cali-Nev-Ha district and experience the sense of family that Key Club emphasizes. The workshops such as the “Release Your Sandbags” workshop, featuring motivational speaker Scott Greenberg, were filled with information that we will definitely take home and use to improve our club. We learned a lot about Key Club as a whole but if there is something that we will never forget from DCON, it’s this single phrase: “So *insert name here* HOW DO YOU FEEL?!?” !- Alex Phu / Service Commissioner

March

A very memorable event that occurred this past month was “Up in the Air”. It was hosted by the city of Mission Viejo and occurred at the Senior Center. Key Clubbers were asked to help volunteer as we are very responsible and just an awesome group of kids! My members had a lot of fun helping out in the booths and guiding children through the game and handing out prizes. Hopefully next year we will be able to help out at more booths as a lot of the members didn’t have a specific job and ran off to play with bubbles. They are group of kids with quite a short attention span, but you love them anyway! There were so many vendors selling unique items and also a super cool BMX show at the event, so many of the members had a lot of fun. It was a great experience and we will definitely participate next year. !- Shannon Yang / President

“ZUMBATHON!”: This exclamation pretty much conveys the whole tone of the event which was a conglomeration of high energy, fast paced movement, and enthusiastic participants. While everyone was dancing and getting hyped up about Relay for Life, I was helping at registration. In contrast to the event itself, my job was fairly low key since my task was to hand out raffle tickets and wristbands after recording people’s information. Of course, I got to join in the festivities near the end and got to dance to my heart’s content with my fellow Key Clubbers. After that, I helped to clean up the photo area and got to call it an night. !- Kelvin Phan / Secretary !!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Earth Day Fair, although very small, was a great event for Key Club to volunteer at. We had about six Key Clubbers that came out to volunteer and we were put into different stations. It was pretty awesome because there were a variety of ways for us to help out at the fair. Some people helped out with games such as ring toss or the cake walk. I walked around in a cow suit for Chick-Fil-A and a few were asked by the coordinator to perform for the fair which was awesome! The Earth Day Fair was at Capistrano Valley High School, so it was great to be able to both volunteer for our school and for a good purpose. !- Amy Lee / Publicist

Relay for LifeThis is always one of the most popular events in the Capistrano Valley Key Club because you aren’t just helping out at the Relay, but you are really making a difference by bringing awareness to the community about cancer. This is a program to help bring knowledge of cancer and celebrate the lives that have been affected by it. We walk laps in order to show our support and one person from each team must be on the track at all times to show our dedication. This year the Capistrano Valley Key Club had our own team and everyone had a great time talking to friends and meeting new people and showing out club spirit for the cause! It was really hot, but it was worth it. !- Shannon Yang / President

BONDfireThis June, we had one of the most fun events in Key Club! The BONDfire was a great way to meet new people and really get to know Key Club on a more personal level. I was able to meet so many members and talk with them as friend, not as an officer to a member. We asked each other many icebreakers and everyone was forced to play so we really had to bond. This experience really summarizes the purpose of Key Club because we aren’t just strangers in a club trying to get volunteer hours for college, but we are a family and every year we gain more members to our family. We are a club that makes people feel included and understood, even if the president is forcing people to talk to each other. That’s what helps the shy people get out of their shell and love the craziness that is Key Club. !- Amy Lee / Publicist

Laguna Hills

Laguna Hills High School helped out at the annual Nellie Gail Easter Egg Hunt, letting little kids see their beloved easter bunny in a beautiful environment.

We helped lay out eggs for the little kids while having fun chucking them at each other. The little kids enjoyed their little goodies in the eggs and had fun with face paint, getting animal balloons, and riding the train. They also had fun simply playing in the park and of course meeting the Easter bunny. Laguna Hills High School continues to serve their community through their community service and having fun along with it. !- Emmeline Ngo / President

Recently, Laguna Hills High School helped out with Saddleback Kiwanis' annual Pancake Breakfast. One of everyone's favorite events that keeps Key Clubbers coming back to volunteer. We basically  served the elderly yummy, hot pancakes with two sausages on the side. Furthermore, we helped with the set up and clean up of place mats and we also seated the elderly. The elderly are very supportive of this event because five dollars for an all you can eat breakfast with service is too good to pass up. We even saw Mr. And Mrs. Pong coming to dine in support of their fellow Kiwanis and Key Club. Laguna Hills Key Club had a great turn out of twenty plus volunteers and will continue to serve their community as much as possible. !- Emmeline Ngo / President

When Spring came around, our school allowed clubs to participate in the annual Culture Faire event.

This gave clubs the opportunity to cook food from a specific country and it opened doors for clubs to raise funds for future projects. It also taught the rest of the school about various cultures worldwide! The Dana Hills Key Club has kept to tradition by representing Canada. We sold pancakes fresh off the griddle in addition to maple, chocolate, and glazed donuts from Krispy Kreme. Attracting a large crowds throughout the day, we raised $502.50 for our club! !- Jocelle Tade / Vice President

Recently, Division 41 South Lions and Division 41 North Froggies came together to have a banquet.

We enjoyed Tutto Fresco for dinner and had ice cream and cookies for dessert. There was talented musicians and dancers who performed. Many members received special recognition from superlative voting. Also, fun raffle prizes were given out. After the main proceedings, we all joined in for a dance DJed by Anhthy Tang of Tesoro, who is the recipient of the Distinguish Webmaster award.  There was a lot of great happenings in our division this year and it was great to come together as a family at this banquet !- Courtney Vega / Vice President

NovemberKey Club Members Rally In Support for the American Diabetes Association’s Annual Tour de Cure!

This past Saturday, November 2nd, Key Club members all across Orange County came out to St. John’s Episcopal School (SJES) to contribute and support bikers riding for Tour de Cure, an annual cycling event that raises funds for the American Diabetes Association (ADA). Starting at 6 a.m. and ending in early afternoon, Key Club members worked hard to set up tables, gather supplies, and put their smiles on, spurring on the amazing race. Road riders cycled with purpose, pedaling through 12 miles of mountainous trails. Each participant, after crossing the finish line in the SJES parking lot, was praised with thunderous applause by our peppy Key Club members, as well as all others who rallied to pay tribute to the bikers. Afterwards, cyclists were led to the campus’s field where they were treated to delicious food free of charge, thanks to Bowl of Heaven and Rubio’s, as well as live music and games. Following this, the child ambassadors for the ADA gave an encouraging speech, reminding us all what we came out for. The L.A. Laker Girls also came out to cheer, holding their own stand on the field for meet and greets. Likewise, children had fun in playing with the mascots and participating in games such as the bike-decorating contest, where whoever had the most decorated bike could win a free bicycle! In the end, the event was a huge success all thanks to racers, donors, and, even more so, our engaged and motivated Key Club members who played an enormous role in firing enthusiasm to the cause. !- Aly Giammanco / Sophomore Representative 28
