We are all pleased to hear that Lion Chris is really enjoying his excursion and we hope that he returns to us in the best of health. We have saved a couple of projects for him to make him feel at home upon his return. At this month’s Board Meeting we discussed the appeal made by young Samuel Thorne’s parents and recommended that Lion Lance determine items of need that could be purchased. We could then follow up with an application for a grant from our Australian Lions Foundation. Now that Lion Peter has his new Hearing Dog, Banjo, we would like to recognise LHD Sandy’s Contribution to our Club and Lion Peter with a memorial plaque to be installed at Lions Haven Memorial Wall. Lion David McKenzie reported net proceeds of $1800 from our efforts at the BBQ in Scotland in the Park.

The Board expressed its appreciation with members and volunteers efforts with several recent projects – Fence required for the Hearing Dog, Banjo’s Training Sessions, Mission Possible, Rescue Mission for Children (Thailand Visit ), LECNA Book & T-shirt sales, Scotland in the Park BBQ, AutObarn BBQs. We were advised that our RED Trailer, for Christmas Raffle, can be purchased – same price as last year’s - $1600. The Zone 8 Chairman is Lion Lorraine McKenzie : Clubs in Zone 8 are Rochedale-Springwood, Logan City Marsden, Logan Village, Logan South East, Logan West, and Woodridge Kingston.

SCOTLAND IN THE PARK - 10 July 2016 – Report Greenbank Recreational Reserve 720 Middle Road GREENBANK Hi fellow Lions and supporters. Our Club Members did a great job at Scotland in the Park last Sunday. So too did Lions’ partners, family members and friends who worked alongside the Lions. Thank you for your efforts. Some of you stayed for the full exhausting day. Some of you who had other commitments during the day, still came to the BBQ and stayed for as long as you could (probably longer than you should have) to ensure everything went smoothly.

The current estimate is that we grossed $2500, costs recorded to date are around $700, which means our profit will be $1800 or close to it.

Thank you Lions Trevor, Lorraine, David McKenzie, Lance, Harold, Maree, Greg, Michael, Peter Massey and Rodney.

I also wish to give a great big THANK YOU to family and friends, Carmel Burgess, Judy Roberts, Gayle Reardon, Maureen Nothling, Brooke Collins, Codey Collins, Noel McKay and Deb McKay. You guys were fantastic and all contributed wherever we needed you. It was also good to have Lions Hearing Dog Banjo with us, as it gave us a chance to introduce ourselves. Banjo remained calm and cool in spite of the noise and crowds.

I want to give special thanks to Michael and Carmel Burgess for ordering and buying supplies, and packing Michael’s Truck with vital equipment. Thanks Trevor for bringing a truckload of equipment. Thanks Greg and Maureen for collecting buns and bread from ALDI, and ensuring we got the right amount when ALDI misunderstood the order (they thought a ‘dozen’ buns meant a ‘bag’ of much fewer buns). Thanks Gayle for bringing sweet and yummy refreshments for the workers (and anyone else who did so. I don’t remember who brought what).

Again, Michael’s estimates of supplies were pretty good. He is some sort of human computer. He knew we would need less than we had last year, and he was right. Our 300 burgers were enough to supply nearly all customers up to the end of lunch time. We did not sell all 600 sausages, but the frozen packs are available to use at Autobarn sausage sizzles. We did not run out of popular soft drinks, so have some left over, again for use at Autobarn.

I suppose you will all want to do it again next year, just to hear the drone of the pipes. Nick Hegerty

CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION 2017 is a very special year, being the centenary of the establishment of Lions Clubs International (LCI). At the International Convention at Toronto Canada on 8 July 2014, LCI President Joe Preston announced a new global initiative to serve 100 million people by 2017. The Centennial Service Challenge is a humanitarian initiative that bring Lions Clubs around the world together in service to celebrate the association’s 100th anniversary in 2017. The program is later extended to 30 June 2018. There are four Centennial Service Challenge Campaigns, namely: 1 Engaging our Youth Support youth in your community, or inspire the next generation of volunteer by inviting Leos and other local youth to serve on a project with you. 2 Sharing the Vision Prevent future cases of unnecessary blindness through vision screenings and educational events. Give the gift of sight through projects that benefit those who are blind or living with low vision. 3 Relieving the Hunger Improve access to health food for vulnerable populations in your community. 4 Protecting our Environment Protect and improve the environment to make your community a healthier place to live for everyone. Visit the Lions100 website at www.lions100.lionsclubs.org to learn more about the Centennial Service Challenge Campaigns. WHERE THERE’S A NEED THERE’S A LION. Our Club is recording our contribution to Rescue Mission for Children –Thailand

NEWS FROM THE MISSION - 2016 Last month, we enjoyed a most exciting adventure to Khun Korn waterfall, about one hour’s drive from the Mission. Lunch was prepared in the morning, and after our Sunday fellowship, we loaded up the vehicles and drove through beautiful scenery before arriving at the Park. As soon as we stopped, the children ran to the natural rock pools, splashing around, and rock hopping, slipping, sliding and yelling with

excitement! After a quick picnic lunch, we all began to walk up the steep slope to get to the actual waterfall. Tramping about two kilometres through the most beautiful lush tropical rainforest, it was worth the huff and puff that we all went through, to experience the invigorating fresh air and very fresh cool water! The waterfall was spectacular! To see all the children splashing, rock climbing and having the time of their lives, made all the effort to get there worthwhile! (More news on Page 11)

The Lions Children of Courage AwardsChildren of Courage AwardsChildren of Courage AwardsChildren of Courage Awards are now

established as an important and extremely worthwhile project of Lions International in Australia. The program was introduced in 1983 by District Governor Joe Mason to provide an awards program through which Lions Clubs in Australia could recognise a very special group of young Australians and their families. At the time there were many awards that recognised the achievements of young people but children with “special needs” were not catered for. Since its modest beginnings, the Lions Children of Courage Awards has grown to be one of the most important events in the Lions calendar. There are four (4) categories for which a child may be nominated and they are…

o Special needs…Children with special need i.e. sight, hearing, speech impaired, wheelchair

bound or long periods of hospitalization or medical treatments.

o Courageous act or deed…Showing great concern for others, aided at an accident,

instrumental in the preservation of life or property. This category may also include children

who have undergone lifesaving operations, undergone daily medical treatments i.e. diabetes,

or care for parents with a disability.

o Inspiring sporting achievement…Children who have overcome great personal

hardship/disadvantages to achieve a high degree of sporting prowess either as an individual or

team, member.

o Sibling recognition… siblings who actively participate in the daily care for their brother or

sister who have either a physical or intellectual disability. All children just want to be accepted by others regardless of any special needs they may have. These awards will portray them as children who have successfully overcome additional barriers, which face them in this world. As each child is called forward for the presentation, a short summary of the reasons for the presentation and eligibility for the award is read out. The recipient of the award then receives a medallion and a certificate. Nominations are restricted to children between the ages of five (5) and fifteen (15) years at close of nominations. This Award Ceremony will be hosted by the Lions Club of Rochedale Springwood on Saturday 10 September at the Community Hall YURANA - 129 Dennis Rd, Springwood QLD 4127. @ 1.00pm Afternoon Tea will be provided.

RESCUE MISSION FOR CHILDREN SAFETY FIRST - Following the tragic fire that sadly killed 17 girls at Wiang Pa Pao in Northern Thailand, the local Regional School Directors inspected all children’s’ homes and boarding schools throughout the Chiang Rai Region. This was the first line of defence against a reoccurrence of such a tragic incidence. Rescue Mission for Children has had visits from the Police and Senior Local Authorities from Mae Suai and have been advised to expect more inspections in the future. Initial comments from the Regional School Directors were very good and so rewarding for the hard work done so far. Rescue Mission for Children has since deployed a proactive approach for the safety of the children, in its immediate response to installing fire extinguishers and smoke alarms in each dormitory and the kitchen. The Site Manager at Rescue Mission for Children has also taken the initiative to develop and implement a Safety Plan. Fire Safety signage is now being installed onsite along with a fire alarm system and fire drills for our children will commence in the next few days. All at Rescue Mission for Children are grateful for the financial support and input they have received from the Management Committee in Australia and importantly the Regional School Directors and other inspectors. They have all been happy with Rescue Mission for Children’s response, as well as the risk management measures that have been taken.

Trip to Lions Clubs International Convention in Fukuoka,

Japan by PCC Lion David McKenzie AM Lorraine and I were most fortunate this year to be able to attend the 99th Lions Club International Convention in Fukuoka, Japan from 24 to 28 June 2016. This was certainly not in our travel plans but I received a letter from the International President appointing me as a member of the Credentials Committee for the Convention. This was quite an honour and so we immediately began making arrangements to travel to Japan. I had accepted this position at three previous Conventions so was familiar with the requirements of the position. Each Lion who comes to the Convention and has been appointed a delegate by their Club needs to be certified as a voting delegate. This is the role of the certification area. This is manned by some 30 staff and my role was, along with a number of others, was a supervisory one. We worked one full day and then two half days and over that period certified some 4200 delegates. On the last day these delegates then come to vote, beginning at 7.30 a.m and the credentials role is to issue ballot papers to those who have been properly certified previously. This includes right up to the International President. This takes some three hours with the busiest period in the first 90 minutes. I had not done the role for some years and it was great to catch up with a number of people who I knew previously. One of whom has become a good friend and is from Budapest. When Lorraine and I went on the river cruise a couple of years back we stayed an extra night at the end in Budapest and caught up with him in his home town. He was again in Fukuoka. Fukuoka is a city on the southern Island of Kyushu and some distance from where the earthquake and floods were recently. The Convention had some 30,000 registrations with a very large Japanese group due to having the International President. I am told it took some 45 minutes for the Japanese group to pass by in the parade. An International Convention has a registration/certification day, then a parade day followed by three business half days, called plenary sessions. The president gives a report just like a Club President, there is a flag ceremony, a remembrance ceremony. The Lions Clubs International Foundation Chair

gives an annual report which this year was based on a Star Wars theme. On the last day the new President is sworn in and then he swears in the 750 new District Governors for the upcoming year. Also there is a Humanitarian Award of $250,000 given and this year went to Doctors without Borders. Obviously there is some great entertainment and a special International Show one evening. We attended the Down-under Breakfast organised by New Zealand and a joint Down-under Reception where a large number of Past Presidents spoke to us. Following the Convention we caught the bullet train to Hiroshima to visit the Atomic memorials. We had seen Nagasaki and it was interesting to where the first bomb was dropped. We also visited an island in the bay where there is a massive Shinto temple with massive gates that seem to just appear out of the water.
