The Robertian PostISSUE : 1 Vol. 1 ANNUAL NEWS LETTER Year : 2019
At a gliering ceremony organised by the Department of Educaon, Government of West Bengal at the Rabindra Sarovar thIndoor Stadium in Kolkata on 5 September, St. Robert's School was conferred with the presgious Sera Vidyalay Award,
2019 by the Chief Minister, Miss Mamta Banerjee. The Headmaster, Rev. Fr. Michael Singh along with Coordinator, Sir
Rajesh Thapa and Managing Commiee member, Sir Anil Sunam travelled to Kolkata to receive the award which consisted
of a Trophy and a Citaon. St. Robert's was one of the three (03) Schools from North Bengal chosen to receive this award
which was given to a total of fourteen (14) Schools in West Bengal. The award is the culminaon of several decades of
unsnted hard work put in by the Headmasters and the Teachers, past and present. It is also a reflecon of the effort that
Roberan students make to excel in academics and co-curricular acvies. The Headmaster summed up the award in the
following manner, “Receiving the Sera Award is a
maer of pride not only for St. Robert's but for
Darjeeling as a whole. It is a fing tribute to the
high academic standards that we have always tried
to maintain. The award brings great responsibility
and, rather than bask in its glory, we have to work
harder to keep up the presge that the award has
bestowed upon us.”

Michael Ghalay, Class 12 A emerged as the Winner in the Inter-
School Nepali Debate Compeon held by the Darjeeling District thCo-operave Bank on 15 September in Kalimpong. He beat the
field of 10 competors from the other schools of Darjeeling and
Kalimpong. Michael will travel to Kolkata in December for the
State Level Debate Compeon. Last year too he had reached the
State Level Finals in which he stood Fourth.
Abhishek Pradhan, XI Arts mesmerised everyone by playing the saxophone at the Kala Utsav, 2019 organised by the GTA at the RKSP Boys'
thSchool premises on 28 September. In the Inter-School Compeon that featured 16 Schools, Abhishek emerged as the winner in the compeon to win the Instrumental Music Category, and won himself a cket to represent Darjeeling District in the State Level Compeon to be held at Kolkata. In the photo he is seen performing at the State Level Compeon in Kolkata.
Rinchen Tamang, Class IX C has made St. Robert's proud by excelling in football. Moulded by Sir Amit Thapa and Sir Sunil Rai from the Sub-Junior levels, Rinchen is maturing into an excellent mid-fielder. He was selected for the Darjeeling U-15 Team that played the Regional Round in Jalpaiguri where he was adjudged the Man of the Match in the Semi-Finals. His performance at Jalpaiguri won him a place in the West Bengal State Team that went on to play in the All India Naonal School Games in Delhi. His talent was noced by professional spoers and, while in Delhi, he received offers to join the Minerva Punjab and the Mumbai FC Academies. However, he returned to connue his educaon at St. Robert's only to be picked up by the Sports Authority of India to play in the U-15 I-League. At present, he is in Kolkata training with the SAI I-League Team. We wish him and his team the very best of luck.
Although the School Staff Team parcipates in various football tournaments whenever we receive an invitaon and, more importantly, when the tournament schedule does not clash with the working hours, we have been unable to li any Trophy for the past 25 year. That is unl we lied the Rambha Thapa Memorial Inter-School Teachers'
ndFootball Tournament on 22 September by defeang RKSP Boys' School Staff in the Final held at Darjeeling Government Boys' High School Ground by virtue of a e-breaker. The Tournament which featured 12 Schools was organised by the Gyanoday Niketan Alumni Associaon. Reflecng upon the past, Sir Binod Thapa, who was the Manager of the Staff team says, “The last me our Staff team won a football tournament was in 1995 when I scored the winning goal in the Final match. This is a wonderful achievement for the teachers who are no less talented than our students.”
In the Chess Tournament organised by the thDarjeeling Gorkha Hill Chess Associaon on 19
thand 20 , October, Jay Singh, 9A won the Under 17 Category by beang a field of 70 parcipants. The St. Robert's team mentored by Sir Rajeev Gurung had fielded 6 players in various age categories. The budding Chess Club is making progress and we hope that it can produce more success stories in the near future.

Norsang Tamang, Class XI A won Gold in the 41-45 kg category at the State Level Karate Championship held at Kolkata. He has been groomed from the junior levels by Sir Mark Mani Mukhia. At the local level too he has won in every category that he has competed in. In recent mes, due to lack of compeon in his category locally, Norsang officiates the games rather than compete with others. Priyanshu Gurung, of Class IX D won the Gold Medal at the Bengal Amateur Taekwondo Compeon held at Neatji Indoor Stadium, Kolkata on 30th September 2019. His achievement placed Darjeeling District in the 3rd Place in Bengal
