Rockdale County Post 2 Commissioner JaNice Van Ness silently shook her head in agreement to Nesbitt’s statement.

The shared feelings among the Post 1 and Post 2 commissioners came from the actions of Rockdale County Commission Chairman and CEO Richard Oden. They

both felt as though Oden’s line question-ing, presentation of questioning and overall tone towards Jones was out of line during the public meeting.

“On behalf of the board of commission-ers of Rockdale County, we do apologize,” Nesbitt said to Jones.

Oden seemed to be troubled because Jones was requesting the county give $25,000 more annually to the CREDC, but Oden claims he still hasn’t received infor-mation related to the CREDC’s exact return on investment to the county, exact number of jobs created, new business comparison for the county and city, an action plan for the CREDC and other financial information

Local law enforcement agencies, church-es and school systems in Conyers, Rock-dale and Newton counties are preparing for any possible Ferguson-style conflicts ahead of a grand jury ruling of the officer accused of killing an unarmed black teenager in Missouri.

Nationwide pro-tests are likely following a pending grand jury decision on Dan Wilson, the policer officer accused of killing Michael Brown, 18, and whether he will be charged with any crimes.

Chief Gene Wilson and clergy at local black churches.

City Manager Tony Lucas said at Wednesday’s city council meet-ing, “With the events in Ferguson about to unfold,” Councilman Stroud had asked Chief Wilson to meet with local clergy. If there are any disputes or protests, Rev.

Al Sadler of the Citizens Progres-sive Club will be the community contact “to come out and calm the issue,” Wilson said. In addition, the police department is holding a “clergy police academy.”

On Thursday, local public safety and school officials from Rockdale County and Newton County traveled to DeKalb Coun-ty for a meeting with more than 100 other public safety officials, public school officials, clergyman and other community leaders to

discuss potential situations.Pastor Eric W. Lee of Spring-

field Baptist said “There was a unanimous feeling that we need to protect the Constitutional right to protest, but at the same time we need to acknowledge the role of public safety.”

“We want people to have a

voice but we don’t want people to be arrested or injured” or lash out in a way that is not constructive, Lee said. “We want people to channel the frustration into some-thing more transformative.”

Dear Editor: The residents of Ferguson, Missouri have suffered great pain resulting from the police shooting death of Mike Brown on August 9, 2014. This trauma was exacerbated by the many hours that Mr. Brown’s lifeless body lay slain in the street. The admitted overreaction by Ferguson police has also been a source of agitation. As the Grand Jury process draws to a close, there is widespread con-cern of violence as law enforce-ment prepares for the worst.

The Bible records some of the most violent episodes in human history. Even more disconcerting is the notion that the first pre-crucifixion violence against Jesus was indeed police brutality (John 18:22). Yet, in all of its wisdom, the words of Jesus compel us to be nonviolent, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the sons of God.” (Matthew 5:9)

In an effort to be peacemakers, the clergy, school officials and law enforcement of Rockdale and Newton counties have joined with co-laborers in Dekalb, Clayton, Fulton, City of Atlanta and others to affirm:

• We support the constitutional right to peaceful protests and condemn violence against ALL people, property & first responders (EMS, fire dept., police, deputies, highway patrol, etc).

• We call on clergy to minister & champion the needs of the community. We urge clergy to mentor & monitor youth in their efforts to promote constructive, redemptive change.

• We support civic involvement

through the expansion of voter registration. We urge every registered voter to make your voice heard in each election, especially for local political offices.

• We call on the business community and philanthropists to support economic empowerment

by creating more jobs and career opportunities for underprivileged youth.

As events unfold both nationally and locally, we submit our leadership in the ongoing effort for equality and social justice. In the event that the

Grand Jury decision is made public this weekend, we will immediately convene to conduct a Redemption Forum for Youth and Young Adults at Springfield Baptist Church, 1877 Iris Dr, Conyers. Stay tuned to social media (Facebook - Springfield Baptist-Church, Twitter -

@pastorewl and Instagram - @SBCGROWTH) for the exact date and time of this event.

If you’re looking at your grow-ing gift list with horror and won-dering how you’re ever going to get it covered without breaking the bank, or if you simply love, love, love a good bargain, this is the perfect place for you.

The Great American gift clear-ance sale returns for the fifth year to the Georgia International Horse Park, Dec. 4-10, with more than 600 different gift items, gift wraps, and accessories at 85 to 95 percent off retail price.

This means you won’t be pay-ing more than $1 or $1.50 for most items.

Fashion jewelry, holiday items, totes, kitchen items, prize trin-kets, bath and beauty products, children’s books, bows, ribbons and that thick, quality gift wrap that you covet but hate to splurge on. Go ahead, get it all.

“It’s a service to the commu-

nity for getting great deals,” said Warehouse Sales Manager Tom Raines. “It’s great for teach-er gifts, Sunday school classes, stocking stuffers and inexpensive gifts you can buy for occasions throughout the year.”

Raines said teachers are the sale’s biggest customers, using the items for Secret Santa work-shops or parties for their stu-dents. Others purchase items to be given as gifts for birthdays, anniversaries and other events throughout the year.

“It’s great for building gift bas-kets,” Raines pointed out. Gift baskets have a high impact for low cost and all the items are new and boxed.

The sale is open Dec. 4-9 at 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. and Dec. 10 at 10 a.m.- 3 p.m. The first couple days see a rush of regulars, so be pre-pared to shop and dress warmly since the Exhibition Hall that houses the sale is not heated.

dating as far back as six years.Oden made Jones continu-

ously walk to the commission-er’s bench from the podium to retrieve documents he kept pulling out of folder. Jones read aloud the first two documents. They read as though they were e-mails, and one was dated from November 2013 and the other was from August.

In the documents Jones read, the aforementioned items and others were being requested from Jones.

Oden then stated he was go-ing to give each commissioner a copy of Jones’ job description and read aloud that from Janu-ary to August, Jones only made 48 calls, which Jones clarified to say it was 48 different people he called.

“Mr. Chairman, I don’t un-derstand the interrogation,” said Van Ness. “This is a budget hearing.”

Oden quickly responded that he was simply asking questions to Jones, the same way Van

Ness did every department di-rector who made a presentation during the work session.

“I’m asking questions for budget requests of $25,000,” he said. “I asked for information. I have yet to receive that infor-mation.”

Rockdale County pays $125,000 to the CREDC. Co-nyers has paid $60,000 but has recently decided to increase its total contribution to $75,000.
