Scripture Reading: Psalm 90:1-4 I. What do I do when I’m missing out on the joy? A. Psychologists offer some of these suggestions to the 45% who have difficulties in the holiday season: 1. Set personal _____________________. 2. Don’t accept any _________________ representation of the holiday. 3. Be grateful for what you ____________ rather than focusing on what you ___________ ___________. 4. Take part in activities that focus on the ____________ _____________. B. Psychology may offer some wise words, but no comfort can compare to that of the 23 rd Psalm: “You are ______________ me.” II. Where is God? A. In his time of grief, C.S. Lewis felt that God was “so ________________ a com- mander in our time of prosperity and so very _________________ a help in time of trou- ble.” B. Psalm 89 is a song for the Israelites in ___________________ who have some _____________ questions for God. 1. The captives remind God of His ___________________. (1-37) 2. The captives accuse God of _______________ His promises. (38-52) C. The Scripture creates a tension by giving voice to this very real human emotion. The Bible is the big _____________ of a big ___________, and it can handle big ____________________. III. Of course… You were there all along. A. Psalm 90 answers the previous psalm, first pointing out that God has been a dwell- ing place to __________ generations. B. When we cry “God’s not there,” we’re really saying, “God hasn’t shown Himself in the way _____ think He ought to.” C. The Psalmist also brings us to a better perspective by fusing together every point of history in one statement: “From _____________________ to _____________________, You are God.” D. I know my God walks through the valleys with me because of the cross of _____________ _______________. A Pure Fountain

“Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him. 6 Do not add to His words, Lest He rebuke you, and you be found a liar” (Proverbs 30:5, 6 NKJV). God’s word as de-livered to us by inspired men is pure but the sad thing is that some have tried to change that word and in so doing it becomes polluted. As Agur wrote it we are not to add to God’s word. That would be changing what God has said and it would no longer be pure. But we are also warned not to take from God’s word for that would also be changing God’s word (Deut. 12:32). In Psalms 19 David wrote “The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes” (Psa. 19:8). To be pure may mean either to be without addition (unmixed) or undefiled (dirty or foul). Wine that has had water added to it may be undefiled but it is still impure for something else has been added to it. The word of God is pure in both senses. It is undefiled and un-mixed and it needs to be kept that way. A number of years ago our brother Jerry was asked to speak to a denominational croup at which he was given a series of questions they wanted him to answer. One of those questions was, “Do you be-lieve the Bible contains the word of God?” One might be led to answer quickly, “Yes, I believe the Bible contains the word of God,” but answering in that way implies that the Bible contains the word of God plus something else, namely the words of some man or group of men. The truth of the matter is that the Bible doesn’t contain the word of God, it is the word of God! When a person is sworn in to testify in court he is asked, “Do you promise to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help you God?” To tell the whole truth means you are not to leave any-thing out and to tell nothing but the truth means you are not to add to the truth. Either way is to change God’s word and thus to pollute it and thus it would no longer be pure. Because God’s word is pure it can enlighten us. To enlighten is to reveal, to give knowledge to. If anyone wants to know God’s way he’s got to spend time with the Bible. When we turn from the Bible to add to it the words of men, then we have left the pure fountain to drink from a polluted stream.
