• Over the years this historic cemetery has becomeovergrown with briars and myrtle.

• Most of the memorial stones have been knockedover and many covered with vines.

• Fortunately, many stones can be uncovered andrescued.

• Jim West, a Rogers’ descendant who lives inShepody is leading an effort to restore ShepodyCemetery

Highlights of Rogers Family HistoryHighlights of Rogers Family History

• John Rogers and his wife, Elizabeth (Spencer)emigrated to Nova Scotia from Ireland in 1761

• The Rogers settled in Londonderry Township NS inthe area now known as Great Village.

• John Rogers Jr. was supposedly the first male bornin Londonderry. Robert Rogers was born shortlythereafter.

• These two sons married daughters of John MahonEsq. John married Eleanor. Robert married Martha.

• John Dudgeon, a boat builder, married BetseyMahon, another daughter of John Mahon

• About 1801 John Dudgeon, John & Robert Rogerssailed to the Shepody Area near Hopewell,Westmorland (now Albert County) NB

• The three brothers-in-law settled next to each otheron the Prince’s Grant.

• Eventually some of John Dudgeon’s land becameShepody Cemetery overlooking Shepody Bay.

• Many Rogers descendants are buried in ShepodyCemetery, which is next to Robert Rogers’ formerland.
