Color Characteristics• Each color has three characteristics:• Hue- color name; The specific individual nature of each color; makes a

color unique.• Value – The lightness or darkness of a hue.

– The value of a hue is made lighter by adding white. This addition of white produces a tint (ex. Pink is a tint of Red).

– The value of a hue can be made darker by adding black. This addition of black to a hue produces a shade. (ex. Maroon is a shade of red- made by adding black to red; Navy Blue is a shade of blue- made by adding black to blue).

• Intensity – the brightness or dullness of a hue. (The normal intensity of each hue is shown on the middle ring of the color wheel).– To dull a hue (lower its intensity)- add some of its complement (the

color opposite it on the color wheel) .Ex. Add blue to orange.• Examples of high intensity colors are: hot pink and fire engine red.• Low intensity colors are: smoky blue and rust.

• Adding a neutral color to a hue changes the value to either a tint or a shade; makes the hue less intense.
