3.1 INTRODUCTION
• The church was the center of life in Western Europe.
• Church bells rang out the hours, called people for worship, and warned of danger.
• Almost every village and town had a church building.
• Town meetings, plays, and concerts were also held in churches.
• Merchants had shops around the square in front of the church.
