Tactical Communications Capability Enhancement


Tactical users, both military and civil, require maximum agility, versatility and robust RF communication links

Tactical Radios come equipped with whip or stub antennas which lack range and are easily shielded by complex terrain

Tactical Users will not deploy with sectional mast systems due to their weight / bulk and set up time

The RolaTube range of embedded tactical antenna systems deliver a solution to this critical capability gap given that:

• They are small and compact and can be easily carried within patrol daysacks

• They have full length linear dipoles embedded which provide enhanced antennas to the user

• They are very fast and easy to deploy and plug directly into any radio (within the frequency ranges)

• This means that the tactical user can very easily elevate the RolaTube embedded antennas and thus achieve significant RF range extension and a more robust command and control network.

Picture shows UK Military using the Squad IAM 30-300 MHz Antenna connected to a Man-Pack Radio to range-extend the Tactical VHF Network. Also note that deployed on top of the Squad IAM is a TrellisWare Mesh Radio and this is being used to extend the ‘bubble’ of the ‘mesh’ network. So the user is getting the benefits of 2 x capabilities at the same time.

Light Tactical Vehicles will often rely on ‘clip in’ manpack radios

Such vehicles will also often lack space within the vehicle for storage

Tactical users will usually seek to position the vehicle in dead ground and remote the antennas from the vehicle

In order to support the next generations of sensor defeat camouflage netting, REX has developed a RolaTube based Camouflage Net Support System. When compared to traditional sectional aluminium pole systems, the RolaTube system dramatically reduces both deployment times and the bulk and weight that needs to be carried into the field.

Being manufactured from highly robust composite and plastic materials, the RolaTube Camouflage Net Support System also delivers significant benefits in terms of reduced thermal radiation and microwave absorption.

8 and 10m 4” Diameter mast / RolaCage Systems

The 4” Diameter masts delivers to the user an ability to deploy significant tactical payloads to variable heights up to 26 and 30 feet (8 and 10m)

The systems have a maximum topload of 12 KG (25 Lbs)

Both are permanently mounted on a robust aluminium RolaCage which enables rapid deployment and also variable height

Systems are rapid to deploy, ease to use and highly versatile


The 8m (26 ft) system weighs 22.2kg and the packed dimensions are:

Ancil – 28cm W x 33cm L x 25cm H RolaCage and Mast – 27.5cm W x 41cm L x 28cm H

The 10m (30 ft) system weighs 24.33kg and the packed dimensions are:

RolaTube 2” and 3” Diameter Single Mast Systems provide the user with small, compact and easy means of deploying an array of lightweight tactical sensors and systems

The Maximum headload of the 5m 3” Mast System is 11 Lbs (5 KG)

The 3” systems can also be used in conjunction with the RolaCage

The 3” systems can also be used in conjunction with the RolaTube tripod system.

Double 3” Diameter mast Systems


Double Mast Systems work by combining two single

masts, one slid inside the other, which delivers a

substantial increase in torsional strength and top

loading capability.

This characteristic makes double mast systems ideal for

those sensors and antennas that are in excess of 5kg

and require high levels of stability with minimal penalty in

terms of weight, volume or deployment times.

Suitable for top loads up to 20kg

Suitable for systems with directional antennas or cameras

Max Wind Speed: 60mph

For applications where the tripod system alone

does not achieve the desired height for sensor

or aerial mounting, REX offers a range of Mast/

Tripod combinations that link the benefits of

both systems into a single package. Single skin

versions can take loads of up to 5kg (11lb),

double skin versions can take loads of up to

18kg (38lb).

By combining the stability of a tripod with the

height of a mast, the unguyed Mast/Tripod

systems create a unique solution for rapid

deployment of sensors and aerials in the

Expeditionary sector, while retaining the valuable

portability benefits of lightweight and very low

packed volumes. For higher masts or high wind

environments, ancillary kits are available to guy

the mast and ensure stability.

systems, REX has developed a family of 1m

and 2m tripods which allows the easy and

stable mounting of sensors, cameras and other

systems at lower levels, without the need for

guy ropes or ground fixings.

As with mast systems, tripod systems

deliver outstanding performance in terms of

packed volume and weight for Expeditionary

applications. REX tripods can be used

standalone or in conjunction with the 3”

diameter single or double skinned masts to

deliver greater height, versatility and urban / flat

roof-top deployment options.

RolaTube military systems have been tested in accordance with the relevant criteria of the mil STD-810g environmental ruggedisation guidelines

High Temperature Storage (Hot Dry, A1: 71°C) Operation (Hot Dry, A1: 49°C)

Low Temperature Storage (Basic Cold, C1: -33°C) Operation (Basic Cold, C1: -32°C)

Masts and tripods are manufactured in thermoplastic composites which are non-conductive.

All masts can be used in wind speeds up to 60mph when correctly guyed and deployed in accordance with the user guide.

Top load varies depending on mast height and diameter but is up to 12kg for single masts and 20kg for double masts. It is the responsibility of the user to ensure the safety and stability of the top load in accordance with the user guide.
