CALLED TO THE WATERS OF BAPTISM Last Sunday, TESSA JEAN

LUPICA AND SAMANTHA ANN MARTELLO were presented at ourbaptismal font and became children of God and new membersof our parish. We offer a warm welcome to them andcongratulations to their parents and families.

HERE IS A THOUGHT Please come to Mass early enough not todisrupt. Leave late enough not to insult. Worship reverentlyenough not to distract. And dress proudly enough not to offend.

ALL SAINTS DAY AND ALL SOULS DAY On November 1, Catholic people celebrate the successful lives of all the people, both famousand obscure, but especially people known only to their friends and families who are now living with God in heaven. It is a holy dayof obligation for Catholics to attend Mass. The liturgy will be offered at 7:00 AM (for those who must leave early for work), 9:00, 10:00(attended by the children of the regional school), and 7:30 PM (for those returning from work). The Commemoration of All the FaithfulDeparted will be observed on Wednesday, November 2. On this day, we remember all the souls in purgatory and offer the sacrificeof the Mass for our beloved dead. In your envelope packet, you will see a special insert for ALL SOULS’ DAY to enroll the names of yourfamily and friends. Additional envelopes are in the narthex. Masses on Wednesday at 7:30 and 9:00 AM offered for the repose of thesouls enrolled on that day.

OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD

Monsignor Weber and I are back from the conventionof pastors in Spring Lake. There were about 90priests in attendance. Some came for anothervacation at the Jersey shore, some for the good meals,

others for the brotherhood and fellowship and most, I trust, for the enrichment it provided. If nothing else, we came fora common need for companionship and support from oneanother to make our journey as leaders of parishes lesstedious and challenging. By the end of the week, we realizedonce again that we are ordinary men, eager to spread theLord’s message in a simple way just by being who we are. This week, the gifts that the Lord gave to us werestrengthened so that as we return to our parishes we sharethem with our people just by being ourselves.

Earlier this month, Albertus Magnus High Schoolhosted its annual induction into the National Honor Society.Someone was thoughtful enough to being me a program andpointed out the great number of students from St. GregoryBarbarigo School who were initiated into the English,Foreign Language, Spanish, Italian, Math, Music societies andthe Seat of Wisdom chapter. This is a proud moment for ourparish and a great tribute to the school and the families ofthese accomplished students.

The first of our Renew + Rebuild projects began lastTuesday as we started the replacement of the roof on thegymnasium of the school. Once a contractor begins a job, itis hard to estimate when it will be completed. We areestimating about a month. This work will not interfere inany way with the school day. When visiting the campus, check out the progress.

I was delighted to give you the good news about thecapital campaign success. It is a tribute t the generosity of somany people. If you have not as yet made your pledge, oreven a one-time gift. It is not too late. If you are interested,I will be happy to speak with you about it.

Father LaMorte

BARBARIGO GOLDEN AGE will meet on Friday, November 4 at12:30 PM in the school auditorium. There is half day of school,so parking will not be an issue. We will have a movie, pizza, coffee and tea and dessert. Movie begins at 1:00 PM. Youmust register by November 1. Cost is $5 at the door. Call Joan(947-3439) and give a phone number where you can bereached. We will also be registering for the annual Christmasluncheon planned for December 2.

PRIESTHOOD SUNDAY USA October 30 isthe national observance of PriesthoodSunday USA which was inaugurated in 2002.This is the time each year to expressappreciation and gratitude to all the priestswho have served the people of St. Gregory

Barbarigo. It is a way to allow Catholics to recognize goodpriests who, day in and day out, do an outstanding job inserving them in parishes across America. The focus is on theplace of the priesthood as a central reality in the life of theChurch. The shortage of priests makes them less visible and, consequently, less prominent. Please remember your priests:Father LaMorte, Monsignor Weber, Father Wilson, FatherChristian Amah, Father Jon Tveit, the Salesian and OratorianFathers; and also the families of Fathers Michael Berry OCD,Dennis Donovan SDB, Michael Keane, Michael Ramos OFM Cap,Kenneth Riello and Archbishop Thomas Wenski who are allmembers of our parish; and thank them for what they do tobring the Lord to the faithful through the sacraments. Also, visit the web site, www.nypriest.com. If you have a son orrelative in the priesthood, please call the parish office thisweek so that their names can be included in this enrollment.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN Next Monday (Father’s 35th anniversaryof his ordination), many of our neighborhoods will overflowwith little children. If you are a driver, use special care on theroad. If you are a “trick or treater,” remember to respect theproperty of your neighbors and to inspect all candy before youeat it. Too much left over Halloween candy? Then bring itwith you when you come to church next Sunday and Fatherwill use it for the children’s candy jar. Thank you. “God, blessall the people we will meet. Let our visit with them be a pleasanttreat. Whatever the costumes we wear tonight, may all be clothedwith Christ’s light. Protect us from danger and the devil’s ways, thattomorrow with the saints we may sing your praise.”

MASS FOR THE BEREAVED The Church fromearliest times has guarded the words of Scripturethat “it is a holy and wholesome thing to pray for thedead that they may be loosed from their sins.” (2 Mac

12:43). Every year on All Souls’ Day andthroughout the month of November the Church

prays, especially in the Mass, for all the faithful who have beencalled home to God through death. On Saturday morning,November 5 at 9 o’clock, we will be celebrating a MASS FOR THE

BEREAVED. As a community united in faith, we share in the lossof our parishioners who have died. Everyone is invited to thisMass. A letter of invitation has been sent to families who haveexperienced the death of a relative during this past year. Ifyou suffered a loss and the funeral was in another parish, please take part in this day. We hope to see you.

BE WITH ME, LORD It is hard to think of a practice morebeneficial than daily Mass. Join those who come faithfully toour beautiful church to celebrate Eucharist at 7:30 and 9:00AM. You will find this half hour you give to prayer veryrewarding.
