General Meeting 7 PM the 1st Monday of Month

Officers Meet 6:30 PM Last Tuesday of Month

This year we are encouraging cash donations where possible rather than food, although we will continue to

accept food donations as we have in the past. Cash donations have the advantage of leveraging Saint Vincent

De Paul’s better purchasing power, allows the purchase of the exact food as and when needed and signifi-

cantly cuts down of the level of manual handling of food. In support of this change one of our Knights has

agreed to a 20% match on all cash donations. In addition the Knights will match an additional $100 for every

$500 collected.

Please support our annual Lenten 40 cans for 40 days program in support of Saint Vincent De Paul and the needy in our community. The program will run at all three Weekend Masses during Lent, finishing the weekend prior to Easter.

March 12, 2017 – The Second Sunday of Lent Gn 12:1-4a /2 Tm 1:8b-10/ Mt 17:1-9

The Big Picture Lent focuses on the journey from baptism to glory. The baptized receive the promise of glory when they are incorporated into Christ, but that promise must develop, be lived and nourished by the Eucharist and come to maturity in the life of each disciple. We cannot pass from promise to glory without passing through the paradox of Jesus’ suffering

and death. Today’s Gospel account of the Transfiguration tells us how this was accomplished for Jesus, and how it will also take place for us. As Jesus travels to Jerusalem his disciples are clueless about what will happen there. To their limited view, Jesus is surely on the cusp of victory. Glory is within their grasp. What they have not grasped yet is that to get to glory Jesus will have to suffer rejection and death.

He takes Peter, James and John up a mountain to pray. What they witness is like the end of the story appearing in the middle. The paradox of his apparent defeat and death is illuminated to reveal its hidden meaning. Moses and Elijah frame Jesus in glory to affirm that by his death he is fulfilling the law and the prophets. As God’s Son, he is leading the exodus from the slavery of sin to the freedom of new life. By his sacrificial death, Jesus saves us while we were still sinners and loves us when we were unlovable. In essence, by his life, death and resurrection Jesus reveals that the face of divine mercy is greater than any evil and more powerful than death itself. It cannot be otherwise, because God is love. No one, even the greatest sinner, can escape the fire of divine love, because it is the source of everything God has created and sustains in existence. Pat Marrin /Celebration

ProLife Story

40 Days for Life is a focused pro-life campaign with a vision to access God’s power through prayer, fasting, and peaceful vigil to end abortion. Portland Lovejoy Clinic is a gathering place to pray and influence women visiting the abortion clinic. Here is an inspirational story from a prayer group praying by the Lovejoy clinic: https://40daysforlife.com/portland Jan 3rd 2017 It was a Friday at Lovejoy. In the early morning, a mother and her daughter “Lllie” came up the stairs from the back of Lovejoy (we call it "the pit"), all smiles. They came right over when a flower was offered. They seemed willing to talk! When asked if she was pregnant, “Lllie”, the daughter, said "yes" and smiled when she was congratulated! After some more talking and showing them the fetal models (she was 10 weeks along), young “Lllie” revealed that she had decided to cancel her appointment for an abortion, and explore the adoption option! She and her Mom seemed so relieved to have made that decision. They were given some resource materials, a flower, and our con-tact information. It was such a wonderful thing to see someone leave Lovejoy, relieved and still pregnant!

St. Cyril will begin to celebrate a Spanish Mass the last Sunday of each month at 1:30 pm

Would you help with Children’s Liturgy of the Word?

“Let the children come to me and do not prevent them; for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.”

—Luke 18:16 Is the Lord calling you to serve the children of the parish? Children’s Liturgy of the Word needs more catechists, for the K through 5th grade group at the 10:30 Mass. If you are interested please contact Mary Ellen O’Larey at [email protected] or call the church office.

RICE BOWL

This Lent our community will participate in CRS

Rice Bowl, a faith-in-action program that invites us

to encounter anew ourselves, our neighbors and

our God.

Please pick-up Rice Bowls at the doors

As our elementary and middle school students

journey into Lent they have been learning about

fasting, almsgiving and prayer. These are hard

concepts for children to understand. They are very

willing to pray for other people around the world.

They show compassion for their living situations

and ask for God’s help for them. Empathy can be

fostered by random acts of kindness and prayer.

Is there more sin in the world today?

Our high school youth group has been delving into a

reflective study of sin and it’s role in daily life. They

took a hard look at how people act in school and the

work place and on the internet and decided that

there are even more opportunities to make bad

choices and that many people do. Perhaps we are just

more aware of sinful acts because of the news and

social media that see everything and report it right

away.

It is really up to us to choose

how much we allow ourselves

to be bombarded by these

stories and how much we let

them influence our choices.

We still have that freedom.
