HISTORY•Roman Missal always published in Latin•Translated in the vernacular languages in

1974•Languages such as Italian and French

received a more accurate first translation•In 2001, the Vatican issued new principles

for directing the translation•2010, this third edition was approved for

use in Canada•November 27th 2011, the first day of use,

first Sunday of Advent

WHY??The new missal offers a more literal translation of the official Latin text

It more clearly translates some Scripture passages used in the liturgy, and is more

poetic in places

The language is more formal and requires some explanation to young students

● There are more affirmations of God’s mercy.● Father is used to address God less frequently.● There is more use of the phrase “we pray.”● There are more expressions that denote our unworthiness.● There is more emphasis on God’s power.● The vocabulary is more extensive.● The prayers texts are more singable.

•The TCDSB has received 1300 copies to share among schools (approx 6 per school) from Novalis
