Mother was less important than father in the family. Father had the power of life or death over everyone. When a new baby was born it would be laid at its fathers feet - if the father picked the baby up it would live, but if he ignored the baby it would be taken away to die. Women were expected to run the home, cook meals, and raise children. If they were wealthy, women were lucky; they had slaves to do the work!Roman Baths (Thermae)

Every town had its own bath complex (like a large swimming pool). There were 170 baths in Rome during the reign of Augustus and by 300 A.D that number had increased to over 900 baths. The Romans loved washing and bathing and rather it being done in private, the Romans built magnificent public bath houses in towns across their empire. Rich villa owners would had their own baths in their homes. You can see remains of a Roman bath in the city of Bath, in Somerset.
