Happy New Year Families!

We hope you enjoyed your winter break and were able to spend valuable time with

friends and family. It continues to be an honor and privilege to serve as the principal

of such as an exemplary and student-centered learning community. As a new year

comes, it brings the excitement of new learning experiences. Our students at Rosa

Lee Carter have been working diligently in core areas: reading and math. The use of

digital content has provided our students with an additional layer of academic

support which has given each student the opportunity to progress at his/her own

rate. Students are setting goals, monitoring their own progress and taking ownership

of their learning.

Along with monitoring student growth, we are also seeing our students involved with

activities that encourage compassion and kindness towards others. We pride our-

selves at RLC at focusing on the “whole child.” We realize our students need to

acquire academic competencies yet we also realize that having character,

determination and the ability to take risks is also vital when preparing for today’s

world. We thank our families for taking this journey with us. Preparing our children for

what lies ahead of them is an awesome responsibility and one that staff does not

take lightly. The Rosa Lee Carter faculty will continue to strive for excellence as we

navigate through interventions, strategies and various frameworks.

We see our current initiatives such as Personalized Learning, One to the World, Bring

Your Own Technology and a Balanced Literacy framework as essential components

to creating students that are able to succeed in a changing society.

Thank you for your unwavering support.

May this New Year bring you peace, warmth and togetherness.

Happy New Year!

Warm regards,

Principal Ann Y. Hines

Students of the Month

As we begin a new calendar year, Rosa Lee Carter is excited to recognize students who have shown exemplar behavior

throughout each school day. Every month, students will be selected to represent their classroom as a student role model.

These role models will be showcased on the morning announcements as well as noted within the Rosa Lee Carter monthly

newsletter. For January, the following students have been leading the way by respecting self, others, and property.

Congratulations to these Leaders of the Pack!

January News For The Art Room!

We hope that you all enjoyed your Winter Break and are well

rested to begin a new year full of new activities!

The yearbook covers were displayed in the front hallway, and

the votes were tallied. Congratulations to our front cover winner,

Kim Trieu! Other student winners will appear on the back cover, first page, and

autograph page.

5th graders will be creating masks for their school wide show, as well as completing Op

Art projects. 4th graders will be completing a fabric project. Third graders will be finishing

their clay coil pots. Clay is always a favorite project! Students are always surprised at how

complicated the clay creating process can be! Second graders will be making

mummies out of plaster. It’s a project that brings oohs and aahs! First graders will be

learning about Van Gogh and copying some of his paintings using oil pastels.

As usual, it’s a busy time in the art room!

The Artist’s Brush

Kindergarten continues to learn about steady beat, singing in

tune, and doing movement activities. 1st grade will be studying

basic rhythm of quarter notes, beamed eighth notes, and

quarter rests. 2nd grade will be adding half note, whole note, half

rest, and whole rest.

3rd grade will be starting their show this month! More information will be coming home

soon. 4th grade will be getting ready to start recorder and be reviewing note names and

continuing learning about composer Holst. 5th grade is excited to share their show, and

they will then learn about composer Mozart and the parts of a choir and orchestra.

January will be very exciting!

Starting off the new year in physical education class, the students will continue with

basketball and small sided games to help improve their skills. We will also be working

on their cardio-respiratory endurance as research shows students are more likely to

be less active during the cold winter months. Once basketball is over, K-2nd grade

will begin an underhand tossing unit and 3rd-5th grade will begin a football unit. K-

5th grade will also be working on strengthening their upper body with some of our

warm-up activities during the underhand tossing and football unit. Our goal is to try

and keep the kids as active and engaged as possible during the winter months.

Stay Active!

Physical Education

We hope you enjoyed your winter break!

In guidance this month, the students in all grade levels will be focusing on discussing the

character trait of fairness and listening and following directions. We will discuss how fair

students always play by the rules, take turns and share, are open-minded; listen to others,

don’t take advantage of others, and treat all people fairly.

Please talk to your child this month about demonstrating these character traits!

As we look ahead to the new year, many of us make resolutions,

but we often lack the motivation to carry through with a

challenging task. The AIMS Foundation recently explored the work

of Carol Dweck, a noted psychologist at Stanford University,

focusing on her research into motivation: (http://blog.aimsedu.org/2013/09/02/

looking-at-growth-mindsets-in-teaching/). She identifies two lenses through which

people view themselves and others: fixed mindset and growth mindset. In a fixed

mindset, people believe they are born with fixed intelligence and tend to avoid

challenges because failure threatens their self-perceptions. Those with a growth

mindset believe that intelligence is furthered through effort, and view failure as an

opportunity to learn.

During SEARCH lessons, students are encouraged to accept challenges, along with

the risk of making a mistake. Those students with a growth mindset are more likely to

persevere in their problem solving and be happier while trying. A wonderful new

year’s resolution would be to help your children view themselves with a growth

mindset, one that encourages motivation and promotes successful mental and

personality development!

If you are interested in learning more about Loudoun County’s gifted services,

please plan to attend one of our upcoming winter information presentations. These

one-hour sessions will provide an overview of the gifted education program and the

eligibility process. The schedule for these meetings will be posted on the LCPS and

Rosa Lee Carter websites once it becomes available.

Greetings from the Library!

Happy New Year! Hope everyone enjoyed some wonderful times with family and

friends during our Winter Break. We are happily back in business in the library, and

our students are continuing to enjoy checking out books, story time, and curriculum

related lessons. Many new books are on their way to us this month, and we have

been researching the possibility of creating a STEM Lab or Makerspace in our

library. Stay tuned for more details about this exciting possibility!

Our staff uses many of our online resources with our students in their classrooms,

and these same resources are available for you and your students to use at home.

Students should log onto LCPSGO with their usual username and password and

then click on the icon for “Library Resources”. No additional passwords should be

needed, with the exception of MackinVia. With MackinVia, students may be asked

to enter their username and password again. If you have any questions about

using any of these resources, please let us know.

As always, we welcome parent volunteers any time during the week to help with

keeping our library organized and running smoothly. If you have an hour or two to

spare any day, please feel free to drop by the library. We will always have

something for you to do and will be very grateful!

The Hour of Code is a global movement by Computer Science Education Week

and Code.org reaching tens of millions of students in 180+ countries through a

one-hour introduction to computer science and computer programming.

Students at Rosa Lee Carter were introduced to coding activities during the

month of December. Students used computers, Bee Bots, iPads, Sphero Balls

and even coded each other using simple directions. Throughout all of the

lessons, the students were actively engaged and are excited to learn more about coding in the

months to come.

What is the Minority Student Achievement Advisory Committee (MSAAC)

MSAAC is tasked to advise the local school system of the educational and cultural

needs of the minority student.

MSAAC is dedicated to further the academic, social and cultural development of

every student and to ensure that the needs of all minority students are met.

MSAAC is committed to developing school cultures that create a learning

environment where every minority student is afforded the opportunity to achieve

their full potential and is recognized as an integral member of the student body.

MSAAC is striving to ensure that the LCPS community is culturally competent and

provides fair and equitable instruction to all LCPS students.

2016-2017 Theme:

“Perceptions & Expectations: How They Impact the Equitable Learning Environment.”

Guiding message

Focus more on similarities and less on categorizing individuals into different groups

based on differences

Rely more on facts and the whole child; less on assumptions, generalizations or fears

driven by single experiences or media frenzies

Get to know each other; ask questions

Be cognizant and honest with your self

As an Administrator, Educator, and Community member

Ask yourself these questions . . . . . . . .

How are your decisions about LCPS students shaping their future?

Are assumptions or differences scripting the paths of LCPS students?

Are we inadvertently minimizing LCPS student potential?
