N TH E SE days whenwe hear so much aboutpersonal rights andpersonal liberties andthe constitutional guar-antee of freedom in theexercise of these liber-ties and rights, weoften wonder whetherman reaJJy realizes to

what extent his rights and liberties areactualities and to what extent they aremerely theoretical.

W e hear the vociferous comments of

those who think that prohibition of anykind is a devilish attack upon our liber-ties, designed by scheming politiciansand reformers to make us unhappy.Such persons probably also complainbecause the sun shines only ten ortwelve hours out of the twentyfour andbecause the trolley cars do not run everyminute instead of every ten minutes andbecause a dollar bill only has one hun-dred cents back of it instead of an un-limited supply.

In other words, they are diedinthe

wool objectors to restrictions and limita-tions of any kind. Yo u will notice thatthese sort of persons believe that theyshould have the freedom of the seas andof the sky, the air, and the earth, butthey will not concede such unlimitedfreedom to everyone else. Th ey claimthat they should have unlimited priv

thing that comes to their minds. Th ey£ want to be free souls, whatever that is,

that cuts across the sky and seems tohave the entire heavens for its unbridledcourse.

If they only knew the principles ofthe universe correctly they would realizethat a comet has a welldefined courseupon which it must stay or there wouldbe a catastrophe in this universe thatwould be more serious than anythingthat has ever happened in the past. Even meteors that seem to drop to theearth unexpectedly and seem also to beunlimited by any principle or law, mani-fest some constraining influence that

has kept them from falling in the heartof a great city and doing untold damage.

The important thing to keep in mindis that none of us can be an unbridled,uncontrolled,  free being, doing preciselyas we please, because each one of us isour brother's keeper to a certain extentand not one of us can live and thinkand act without having some influenceor effect upon others; and our libertiesare the liberties of everyone and ourpower is a part of the united power ofall beings.

I think this point was excellently andbeautifully illustrated recently when aclergyman at the Methodist Conferenceheld here in the W es t stood upon theplatform and made this statement: "Aslong as Crusoe was living alone on theisland he could take his gun and standon any point of the island and shoot inany direction as often and as carelesslyas he pleased, but the moment he dis-covered Friday and knew that there wasanother person on the island he had tobe careful about shooting; and everytime he raised his gun to fire he had to

stop and think a moment and ask him-self where Friday was.”

Certainly, all of us are in the positionthat Crusoe occupied after he dis-covered the man Friday . Th e only dif-ference is that we are surrounded bythousands of Fridays and we have morethan one gun. W e have not only a ma-terial firearm in the form of a pistol,rifle, revolver, machine gun, or cannon,but we have bombs and other explosivethings of a chemical nature and we haveautomobiles and wagons, and ferociousdogs, howling radios, and similar manmade inventions, along with diseasedbodies, contaminated auras, objection-able personalities and that which “fourout of five” also have. And then alongwith all this we have the most danger-ous power of all, the power of our  minds.

Certainly we must bridle and controlsome of these personal assets and dan-gerous weapons, regardless of our in-dividual rights and liberties which amanmade constitution has guaranteedto us, but which the Cosmic does notclassify as belonging to us in any per-sonal sense at all.

The Cosmic does not look upon itself  as a personal ruler that gives first con-sideration to its own desires, but is evermindful of the needs and requirementsof the majority. In other words, all ofthe Cosmic and spiritual laws take intoconsideration the utmost good, the ut-most benefit, of all living beings, anduntil we place ourselves in attunementwith this same thought and guide our-selves accordingly we are out of har-mony with universal law. The personwho wants to be entirely free and callhimself a free soul is like unto a drop ofwater trying to rise up out of the oceanand float off into space as an individualentity. It no longer is a part of theocean and it is no longer useful or evenbeneficial to itself, and the good, brightsun will soon evaporate it and let itfloat off into nothing ness in the heavenlyspace.

It is not necessary for us to lose ourindividual identities or to lose our indi-vidual power by being attuned to themass consciousness and cooperatingwith it. But each thought that is heldin our mind and radiates its energy intospace to contact the minds of others

should be censored by our consciousunderstanding of our responsibilities toothers. Just as we would guard and

 guide ourselves in the handling of a fire-arm in the center of a crowded street,so we should guide and guard ourthoughts and words and actions. Unlessthe thing we contemplate doing will becongenial and beneficial to others, aswell as to ourselves, it is selfish andtherefore dangerous. Not one of us canhope to be extremely happy, extremelysuccessful, and extremely prosperous, ifall of our efforts and all of our achieve-ments are going to be as a result of asacrifice or loss on the part of others.

I have often wondered, as I havewatched some men at horse races, and

questioned whether they realized in theproper sense the responsibility theywere assuming in making bets and ac-cepting winnings. In watching a horserace there is an extreme thrill and enjoy-ment in noting the understanding thatthe horse has of the principles of racing,in seeing the test of skill, and in admir-ing the beauty of the animal's actions.

But when men can find a real thrill ininvesting a few dollars on the selectionof a number or name of a horse andthen go away with a multiple of thatamount of money, perhaps a hundred

fold, there is something wrong in theirprocesses of reasoning. Ever y dollarthat anyone wins at a race track, or atany form of gambling, represents adollar lost by someone else. Gamblingof this kind is only a matter of book-keeping of debit and credit. W h atsome win, others must lose. The twoamounts must balance, with some book-maker or schemer standing in the middletaking a percentage from both. Bu t thehappiness that one man or a group ofmen find in walking ofF with moneythus secured is inconsistent with Cosmic

principles because it represents a loss, asorrow, a grievance, a serious predica-ment to someone else. Too many per-sons in the world today are enjoyinggreat benefits as a result of the sufferingof others. Such happiness cannot lastand it cannot contribute to either the

benefit of the winner or the ultimate

benefit of humanity at large. Th e only

happiness that each one in any com-

munity can really experience, aside from

spiritual happiness, is that physical,

material joy that comes as a result of theaccumulated masshappiness of thosearound him.

W e, who live here in this Santa ClaraValley, for instance, have learned why

the old timers called it the Valley ofHeart’s Delight. When the first ex-plorers came to California and traversedthe greater part of the State theyselected this valley surrounded by hillson the four sides, as the most pic-turesque, the most attractive, little spotin the whole State for the founding ofa city. Its soil gave every evidence ofbeing highly productive; irrigation wassimple; the climate delightfully balmythroughout the year; the means of navi-gation and transportation were clearlyevident. So the first pueblo was built

here and it later became the first capitolof the State where the first Federalbuildings were built, and it is today thecenter of the most beautiful suburbanresidential district of the whole of Cali-fornia, and it is known that within afew miles of this city there is a commu-nity of multimillionaires, representingthe greatest aggregation of wealthyhomes and wealthy individuals in thewhole of the United States. Here areuniversities, colleges, and the most ad-vanced institutions of learning andculture, and thousands upon thousandsof persons find extreme happiness,

health, and prosperity. All this is becaust most of the individuals in the com-munity and in the entire valley, work incooperation with the principles of uni-versal happiness. Each realizes that to

enjoy life in its fullness we must sharesuch blessings as we have and learn toenter into the spirit of cooperativeattunement with universal principles.

W e must always be watchful andmindful of our own weaknesses and ourown contributions toward the effectupon others. W e could not have beau-tiful homes and health, happiness andpleasant environment, if on all sides ofus there were disease and poverty, want,and privation. None can continue toenjoy what is rightfully his, as well asours, if he is sending forth or produc-

ing that which is destructive or unkind,inconsiderate, and out of harmony withthe universe.

Keep all these principles in mind andrestrain yourself and limit and restrictyour personal ambitions, if they are of anature that brings sadness, or want, orsuffering of any kind to others. Be yourbrother’s keeper in so far as you are aguardian of his interests, as well asguardian of your own, and in this way

fulfill the very spirit of Cosmic law as

well as the letter of human conscien-

tiousness.

THE POWER OF SUGGESTION THROUGH BELIEF, 

KNOWLEDGE, CONTEMPLATION, CONCENTRATION, 

VISUALIZATION, MEDITATION AND REALIZATION

|HIS lesson is the heart’s jew el, created by theuniversal soul and por-traying a vivid mani-festation of the higherteachings of infinitewisdom, weaving the fa br ics of human livesstrand upon strand,here an incident, there

an episode manifested by that infinitelaw employing perpetual motion to flingthe shuttle.

The world’s greatest hero is he whomasters himself, for it is then that theeye of dharana is opened and all naturebecomes an open book.

W e cannot suspend animation bysuggestion and concentration but onlythrough the exercise of the wisdom ofGod, the wisdom to understand spirit,vital force, mind and matter, and howto control them, which comes as a resultof discovering truth and how to differ-entiate between positive truth and nega-tive delusion.

I only know of five American bornmen,— Imperator H. Spencer Lewis, f. J.B., J. M., J. S., and myself, who havethis power within us developed to a pointwthere we can see ourselves penetratethe whole universe and become one withthe universal spirit and w'ork with it. Bybecoming one with the absolute we canrecognize all transcendent truth and wecan go from physical into and throughthe psychic and thence to the spirit.There are several Hindus in Americawho know and understand suspended

animation, and they will, I am sure,stand by me in this article. Th en , ifBrother Lewis, M., S., and B. endorseit, I will be happy. Th is will probablybe the first article of its kind made pub-lic in the United States, and, therefore,I will be conservative.

Those who cannot see and under-stand human vibratory thought waves,nor the soul of man, nor W H Y man is,cannot suspend animation until they putinto practice the spirit of universalityand become one with the Infinite. W hi lethis divine lesson is as deep and wideas the Red Sea was to Moses and thechildren of Israel, we are going to crossit in this article, “Flesh and blood hathnot revealed this to us but our  Father in Heaven.” Personally, I will only be in-strumental in lighting and illuminatingthe way by now and then touching yourhearts with divine injunctions. M y ar-dent desire is to do it justice by doingit perfectly . I will have but little troublewith those who know and understandthe law.

The only way you can understandabstract philosophy and truth is toreason by deduction instead of induc-tion and by living in a perpetual raptureof love and faith until you can visualizehuman thought. Yo ur psychic body isyour divine inheritance. Th e evolutionof universal spirit is that ever endless,boundless truth, unifying all sects andcreeds and making peace betweenreason and faith. In the course of timeyou can consecrate yourself to concen-tration, teaching, studying, and become

intuitive to where your intuition trans-cends time, space, and limitations of thebody so that your human ideals ascendto that place where you have faith in

 faith and real ly be liev e. “Bless ed are  they who having not seen, yet believe.”When you can command the power toconcentrate, have clear sight, knowledgeto visualize, using the heart to meditateand wisdom to realize, then and onlythen can you succeed in suspending ani-mation in yourself. M an desires, Godwills.

Concentration is the only means ofabsolute control of mind, soul and body,and in order to succeed you must masterthese faculties. Remember, each soul isinnately divine. Realization comes bymanifesting divine humanity, either byworship, psychic control, or scientificphilosophy. “Yo u are then free.”“This is the whole of the law and theProphets.”

Every phenomenon that was everproduced on earth by control of thevagas nerve has been called a miracleby the unlearned. I believe I was thefirst  American to stop or to co ntro l the pulse in either arm; this I did on James J. Bruce in 1899 in Dallas, Texas. Iwilled it by concentration, then “shout-

ing” the thought. T hat is the secret. Itis thus we go to a state of supercon-sciousness. W hi le in this state the soulenjoys its blissful peace, at one with in-finite intelligence. Even then unless weknow the difference between the sym-pathetic nervous system and the cerebrospinal nervous system, we can neversafely suspend animation nor heal thesick. Nor can we stop the radial andtemporal pulse on both sides at will;stopping the heart beats; causing theheart to contract to one half its normalsize.

Those who know how to vibrate onmore than one plane and know philos-ophy and anatomy, may know how toperform this feat, because we know howto control the sympathetic nerves of theanatomic nervous system in the musclesof the heart. Th is is the only way weknow to suspend animation in ourselves.

Suspending animation in oneself is

dangerous unless you understand the

law, but as before stated your Impera-

tor Lewis, J. J. B., M. S., and I have

ventured thus far. W e cause our spiritbody within to contact and become onewith the universal spirit. Persona lly myexperiences justify me in saying that weraise our vibrations to a point where we

see ourselves as God sees us and whereno other human being can see us exceptthrough projection.

Before we endeavor to prove any-thing, let me give you a Hindu proverb.They term it a divine injunction. It isthis: “Do not accept anything as a factuntil you have proven it unto yourself.”You cannot accept truth until it be-comes truth to you through divine wis-dom. That being a fact, it behooves usto listen and have faith to realize thedivine gifts of the infinite that havepassed down to us through suggestionsince the beginning of all manifestion ofGod in manifestation. Th e law of sug-gestion began before anything was doneon earth.

There are twelve distinct and discretedegrees of suggestion with sixty inter-mediate charges and obligations to belearned in conferring these degrees.

Divine intelligence suggested thatman be produced in the image of God,acknowledged and the divine sealstamped thereon. Th ere after, God sug-gested His laws through man to meet

the prayers of man and to satisfy hispowers and apprehension. God's sug-gestions brought to man the divine soul,and to nature, order, harmony, love andbeauty,— the all of which produce in-finite perfection.

God’s law of suggestion proves thatthe material world is bound to a spiritualworld through divine suggestion. Th isenergy is the dominating power of God,seen and unseen, create and uncreate,the manifest and unmanifest. Th e un-manifest is a world of unseen wisdom

that we should see (the spouse of thesoul), while the manifest shows the sug-gestion of a world of nature which is ofGod. Nature is God's masterpiece. Theunseen is the mind and thought, thespirit of God and the soiil of man.

Remember, at God’s suggestion,truth and nature are friends of man, butsome men repudiate both of them. Godsuggested man’s divinity in the fullestexpression and this universe in millionsof expressions. God makes no mistakes.If he did the divine mind would be afailure and everything out of harmony.

The true science of suggestion formany years was a buried treasure toAmerican people, while in some coun-tries it was well understood. Some ofyou are now beginning to understand its

powers and limitations. The Masters ofthe East do not have a monopoly on it,nor do they have a corner on the king-dom of God, but they do have a trueconception of God and man and of thepurpose of life on earth and its journeythrough the heavenly planes, even tothe celestial throne where infinite truthis enthroned and lasts throughout etern-ity. Th ey drink deeply of the PierianSprings.

Some people have decided that thereis a different viewpoint from the one

they have, and that there is somethingthat they do not have which appears tobe beyond their reach; and they seem tobe seeking an explanation of the un-explained mysteries of life and con-tinuity beyond the grave. ‘‘It is we ll."They can get more of it through sug-gestion than perhaps they can compre-hend but, thank heaven, people are be-coming truth seeking and are ready tolisten and believe.

When a student is ready to learn athing, either science or religion, he has

a halo around him and the divine spiritlights that halo so that it cannot be hid-den from enlightened view. He is thenread y for that divine message . It isthen and only then that the inherenttruth of Christian philosophy is givento us by suggestion, and can be taughtto understanding,— God the true andonly teacher.

One of the hardest things to learn insuggestion is to make your physical na-ture obey your soul. Also in suggestionit is essentially important to understand

the difference between God and man;therefore, the occult teaches that manis God. man is spirit; God is spirit, Godis cause of spirit and God is cause ofman. God is infinite and man is infinite,being the same substance, but vastlydifferentiated. But, listen, lest ye forget— GO D IS A B SO L U T E . God is the

sum essence of all potentialities, of the

divine mind, the Cosmic substance from

whence came all things. God is the

divine soul controlling the sea of mind.

God is the life of the world, the dynamo

of the spirit body. God is the spiritualteacher of all mankind, the only sourcethrough which you can know the truereality of the universe. God is principle,life, truth, spirit, love, mind and soul,

all in all. God is pure and we are onlypure when centered in God. God is thelight of the world that guides our foot-steps. You cannot realize God unlessyou recognize Him which you must dowithout seeing Him. W hen you arealone with God you must forget self anddo all you do in realization of God, theGod in you, the unseen Solar Glory.

God's law is a law unto Himself; un-changing, unfailing and cannot bebroken. W hile , on the other hand, manis the individualized extreme solar sys~ 

tern which intervenes between the two  pole s o f the law . That is why man iswhat he is— Go d’s suggestion. M an isGod ’s idea. Man is produced, evolvedand manifested in God’s spiritual image;therefore, man is the divine in humanityand through man, humanity becomesdivine. Man is God’s ideal in and outof that infinite intelliqence, that infinitesea of mind which is God. Man is God’scrowning glory; and even in the castleof God's ideals there is a refuge forhuman souls where they are taught togrow unto and into the divine illuminat-ing Light of universal Soul.

Life is full of God’s ideas and sug-gestions but it takes both knowledge andwisdom to interpret them and pass themon to students by way of suggestion.The public does not always take kindlyto one who knows the truth and daresto tell it or teach it. Th ere for e, we arenow approaching our students with careand caution, preparing their instinctivemind.

I realize that I am dealing this mo-

ment with an ever restless wave of hu-manity tossed bv the storms of emotionson the raging sea of life with thouqhtonly for today instead of eternity. will, I am then receptive to divineknowledge. Then it is that intuitioncomes to my rescue. Everyth ing onearth is alive with impersonal conscious-ness. It is the divine within which iseternal.

By way of explanation in dealingwith the mind I give it to you as taughtto me. W hen I speak of the instinctivemind, you may call it the natural orobjective or conscious mind. T he spir-itual mind you know as the subjectiveor subconscious mind and the celestialmind you know as the superconsciousmind. I can best honor my teachers bypassing it on as given to me. Therefore,I tell you that mind is thought principle.If mind controls the body— who or whatcontrols the mind? Instinctive mind,—conscious control; spiritual mind,— spir-itual control; celestial mind,— celestialcontrol. W he n wisdom is highest in themind it is then that you get your heart’sdesire. Mind is the sensorium of yourfeelings.

W he n you give a suggestion to a stu-dent for scientific demonstration, informhim of the true divine nature and in-herent character of the different degreesof mind. Th en , you will observe resultsthat you have never attained before.

Teach him that mind is separated bythree distinct and discrete degrees,—instinctive, spiritual and celestial mind.The interior of man belongs to mind andis separated into many more degrees.

Mind has its seat in the brain in itsfirst principle. Instinctive mind encloses,encases and envelops both the spiritualand celestial mind. Mind impels thebody at will. Instinctive mind in formand image is as a world: spiritual mindin form and image is as heaven and de-rives its form and images from the

spiritual world. Instinctive mind hastwo regions; the higher is called rational;the lower, sensual. Instinctive mind issupposed to be continuous, yet when itcontacts the two higher minds it appearsto be more discrete but it is seldom asreliable as they are. It is so reactivethat occasionally, when the two higherminds are not contacted with it, it willact against them instead of with them.Spiritual mind, however, is deeperrooted and helps to balance the instinc-tive mind. The spiritual mind contro lsthe man with high emotions, high ideals

and different instincts yet certain it isthat the lowest forms of human life havethe fourth principle or instinctive mindand some of them but little higher thandumb brutes.

In higher types one can observe thegradual changing— as the Ma sters say,grading and merging the higher typeinto the fifth principle; yet we do notwant you to forget that even the highesttype of man having a keen intellect,carries with him that fourth principle ofinstinctive mind and uses it frequentlyand sometimes is used by it. It is a sadthing in life to see the astute young manwho thinks he knows it all, thinks heis the incarnation of Confucius, thinkshe has a Confucian mind, only to findthat he has begun a new day. The worstis yet to come; he seldom finds that out,and goes on and on, and God pity himwho permits the instinctive mind tousurp or control his higher or spiritualmind. If one can purify his intellectand emotions and stabilize his instinc-tive mind then the spiritual mind is puri-fied.

Some of the occult schools call thefourth principle the instinctive mind andit is in this stage that man uses it mostIt is understood that physical man couldnot exist without it; do not forget that.It is the instinctive mind that gets intothe habit of doing things and it gathersunto itself valuable information frommany sources. No t all are hereditary,but many are the thought waves re-corded therein. Such men as Burbank,Ford, and Edison, have used the instinc-tive mind in the fourth principle insteadof allowing it to use them. On e morestatement concerning the instinctivemind. It is the basic foundation of appe-tites, passions, desires, instincts, feelingsand emotions, manifested in man, and

when he is deluded by negative de-lusions he has no compassion for goodor for God. Th at is because selfcon-sciousness never comes to man exceptthrough unfoldment of the spiritualmind.

Celestial mind derives form and imagefrom the highest and purest celestialsoul, which, together with the spiritualmind, comes to the aid of the instinctivemind and concentrates on infiniteknowledge and wisdom. The instinctivemind is the Key to socalled mysticism.

The spiritual mind leads you onwardthrough peaceful realms free from de-lusion, lighted with the bright and shin-ing eyes of illuminated souls that havefound bliss. W he n mind becomes per-

fect through divine peace the body be-comes perfect. Then the mind, soul andbody are ready to proceed. Th ere is acritical point in man's physical life asthe fifth principle (man’s intellect) be-gins to unfold.

In producing the above mentionedtwelve degrees of suggestion and con-centration, you begin first by suggestingto the student that “we are going to door not to do a certain thing for a certainreason, in a certain length of time.’’Almost instantly the proposition looks

reasonable to the student and if it beyour intention to suggest to him tosleep, stop pain or carry out some otherpurpose, tell him so. Explain how torelax, suggest every thought and action.Laying on the hands is often helpful,though my work is done without touchor w'ord. This is the way I was taught,using the power of concentration, deepbreathing and “shooting’’ a thought.The American method is by hypnotism.It is the easiest way because they hearyour suggestions and feel your touch,and if you have any magnetism they

feel a magnetic thrill that makes themanxious to obey your suggestions, andif they actually fall “asleep,” then andthere is your time for suggestion.

The laying on of hands is all right intouching or passing up and down thespine, the longitudinal vertebral gangliaand various sympathetic plexuses, there-by gettinq quicker and more active re-sponse. The same method may be used

in healing with massage, all kinds of

adjustments and magnetic vibrations,

working on the spinal nerves which go

to every part of flesh, blood and tissue.

All are useful and good for divine heal-

ing, instead of working through the

spinal nerves, you use the sympathetic

nervous system through the psychic

body where prayer consistent with

God’s law is always answered, because

the soul is the essence of God’s love.

The only reason for failure is because

some do not have faith. If you really

believe in faith then you have faith in

faith and get results. Others are toometiculous and do not concentrate.

W e have a long and interesting roadbefore us to travel, so let us go onwhere it is most interesting. You now

take your students into and through thespiritual mind and in that state your stu-dents become rigid. Th is state is knownas the cataleptic state. Some teachersclaim rigidity takes place as the studentgoes through the third degree andothers contend that it comes as they gofrom the third to the fourth, but occultteachers known that after you get intothe third degree your instinctive mindstops acting alone and is merging intothe spiritual, which produces a shudderand a twitching sensation which gener-ally but not always produces catalepsy.Occult teachers can stop the student inthe third degree before he gets rigid,also after he is through and relaxed andbefore he goes into the fourth degree.They can then have the student rest inthe first part of the degree, having sug-gested to him in the second degree thathe need not stop in that rigid catalepticcondition, but it takes an experiencedteacher to do that. If your student isrheumatic or crippled it is much betterto put him through the cataleptic degreedaily and forcibly break up the ad-

hesions, having, however, suggested tohim in the second degree that he willnot feel any pain during the breakingup of the adhesions nor thereafter. Fol-lowing your suggestion for a few days,you forcibly break the adhesions andyour student is well. Th e effect of anysuggestion is the result of the manner,form and power of the teacher’s mindto send the suggestion to the student.

I have often witnessed divine healingsin some Pentecostal meetings and otherchurches where there was every degree

except suspended animation, even pro- jec tio n. Projectio n is different from sus-

pended animation only in that in projec-

tion you may go anywhere that you can

go in suspended animation, but in sus-

pended animation the heart stops beat-

ing. Th ere is no danger in projection

and every one should study and try

again and again, practicing the Rosi-

crucian teachings until you succeed, but

do not undertake suspended animationuntil you know the law.

The best proven methods are taughtby adepts who suggest to their studentsin the first and second degrees whatthey are going to expect of them,— howfar they wish them to go, and securean agreement beforehand to go to thatpoint and return at their suggestion orcommand. The students will usually doso. It is wise to suggest to them not toremain too long in the fourth degree,and when you suggest to them to gofrom the third degree on into the fourthdegree tell them you have something inthe fifth degree that is very importantfor them to look into, and get theirminds on the fifth degree. Do this al-ways with new students, so that whenyou see them going from the third into

the fourth degree, you can, as soon asyou observe that deep breath and knowthey are in the fourth, at once suggestto them to “let's go on now into thefifth degree.” Unless you do this thestudents may wish to remain in thefourth and fail, neglect or refuse to gofurther. In fact, very few ever gofurther. All new students like to remainin the fourth degree, as it is their onlychance to read people’s mind. W atchthem closely and suggest to them to takeanother deep breath and go on. W he nyou observe another deep breath hasbeen taken, with full expiration, you willknow they are in the fifth, the independ-ent clairvoyant degree, and if there isany doubt in your mind you may dispelit by sending your students to visitsome friends, letting them rest a mo-ment and then have them describe theirhome and state what room they are sit-ting in, etc. You can then telephoneyour friends and ascertain positivelywhether your students are in the fifthdegree, for if so your friends will verifywhat has been told to you. T he greatest

work ever done through clairvoyance isaccomplished in the sixth degree, thedeep trance degree,— where a true, bornclairvoyant can answer any questionyou ask him, even the most profoundquestion relating to the philosophies. Inthe fifth degree a student can go with athought to any place you suggest but inthe sixth degree they do not have to goanywhere for they say everywhere ispresent, proving to us in this degree theomnipresence of God and mind.

The student should not enter into the

seventh degree until he has seen it done.

The only trouble I ever noticed withstudents was that they thought theywere everywhere and that everywherewas here. Th ey thought they kneweverything there was to know, and theinvariable answer would be that therewas nowhere else to go. Some Ameri-can scientists have criticised this criticalpoint, stating that omnipresence was allproof and that I was at the end of allsuggestion. Being absolutely certain ofmy position and having witnessed overtwo hundred demonstrations of sus-pended animation, I projected with somecoworkers into the seventh degreewhere they were in a spiritual conditionand while their minds were at rest incomplete suspension I obtained my posi-

tive proof of God and man, of theChurch of God, and the man of God.Students in this degree lost all trace ofa material world as well as of sin andsorrow. The y gave me all the proofnecessary to convince me that the in-stinctive mind was completely sus-pended and the spiritual mind wasgrading and merging into the celestialmind,— causing neck and spine both tobecome rigid.

Do not forget that when the instinc-tive mind is suspended, it does not mean

suspended animation. Suspended ani-mation comes only at the end of thetwelfth deqree or twelfth round of the‘‘Golden Ladder.”

The seventh degree is the celestialdegree, where we get our most profoundphilosophy. On one occasion my wifegave the audience the most beautiful talkfrom this plane that I ever heard. Itwas after she had gone through theseventh, eiqhth, ninth, ten, eleventh andtwelfth degrees, heart stilled as in deathfor four minutes and fiftysix secondsand came back through those deqreesand stopped in the seventh and told ussome of the things she saw and learnedwhile out of the body. Tru ly it waswonderful. I cannot take time and spacein this article to give it to you, exceptto tell you that when you leave the sev-enth or celestial degree and in theeighth degree, you are in a coma. Thisis likewise true in the ninth. In the ninth

did in the sixth. W he n the Kundalinifails to  function before the ninth, it never fails from thereon. In the tenth itfunctions in the throat and you canplainly hear the death rattle in the

throat. Th en in the eleventh it goes tothe frontal region. Th e eyes open andset as though never to close again. Thestudents then have one more deep respir-ation and they are in the twelfth degreeand the last plane where the heart stopsbeating and the hands and feet becomecold. This is where and how I, per-sonally, spent fortyeight hours in eter-nity, which experience I will briefly giveat close of this article. In this experi-ence when we reached the seventh planethe Masters said, “This is Heaven,where dwells the W hite Brotherhood

whose membership is Jesus and his Dis-ciples also Krishna and thousands ofother Disciples of the Absolute. It isthe home of the Saints, who havereached the Holy Grail.”

Paul made the address of welcomeand said: “These Disciples can go toany and all planes in the Eternal Realmin their spiritual body and when neces-sary go back to the earth plane in theirspiritual bodies.” I remember thinkingthe seventh degree should be called thehome of the angels, for truly, they were

there.The “Golden Ladder” with itstwelve steps is symbolical but verynecessary in order to explain to the hu-man mind the continuity of life. M il-lions of souls can prove through projec-tion all that I have said thus far, butsuspended animation proves the ascen-sion from the seventh plane on throughall of the heavenly planes and how theeighth, ninth, tenth, eleventh andtwelfth degrees correspond with thedifferent planes and positively provethat on the seventh plane where all

those who were immortals on this earthplane are master teachers, full of lovethat knows no evil and walk daily withGod and teach others divine wisdom tocomplete understanding, for only thencan any soul go with its spirit bodythrough the remaining five degrees andvisit those planes beyond the seventh.

If it were not true, people who project

could come back and tell you what we

who have suspended animation can tell

you of celestial degrees that are only

available to the angels in heaven,— ex-cept through suspended animation.Every statement I make from this planeon is as true as the angels in heavenare true and just what you will see when

you have finished life’s journey pro-vided, however, IT IS FINISHED.

Now to all creeds and sects, trueseekers of the Holy Grail, let me saythat there is but one true source of in-finite life of which we are all partakers.It is, however, divided into many stagesas I am showing you.

W he n you desire to accomplish some-thing through suggestion, know whatdegree to work in,— which Key andwhich Round of the Ladder. Th en letyour desires be the controlling impulse

to do only the will of God as you giveyour suggestion to your student. Th eywill no longer have the desire to tres-pass against God's law. Th at kind ofsuggestion brings results, purifies thesoul and endures forever. W hy ? Be -cause a purified soul is free from ma-terial desire. Yo u then enjoy divinepower and love by right of possessionand you are in tune for the doing ofGod’s work, healing, teaching orpreaching. A purified soul, being a rec-ord of divine mind (with ecstasy, faith,hope and sublime strength, willing and

believing) influences sick people, curesthe blind and lame and fills them with

 jo y. It is God 's divine gift throughsuggestion and prayer, showing thepower of mind and spirit over mind aswell as mind over matter. Yo u have toaccept that statement; it is part of one gre at universal law that cannot bechanged, added to or taken from. Youmay trespass but you cannot breakG od’s law. On e thing more you mustagree to,— that it is the spirit of Godacting through the student and theteacher, the patient and the healer.

W h y do millions fail to suspend ani-mation or to heal the sick? It is becausethey do not through faith confidentlyhold the desire in their soul as well asin their mind until they visualize itF U L F IL L E D . First receive in spirittheir desire; second, conceive it as a per-fect idea in soul; third, your desireprayer is fulfilled. The human soul must

function on the divine plane until it has

God that produced you, to heal you.“Be ye as perfect as your Father inHeaven is perfect. The minute youmerge into God consciousness there isno pain, sickness nor death. Jesus saidthat life did not end with the grave.

Some of you have observed the workof healing when it was instantaneous.That is when you realize the kingdomof God within. It is then suggested toyou that you be free and sometimes in-stantly you feel a great load is liftedfrom the heart, no struggle, no strife.You feel yourself letting go; you feelhappy through faith, love, hope andconfidence. Th en a light comes to youand illumines your soul and your eyesbeing the expression of your soul, beamwith joy. You feel as if you want noth-

ing in this material world. Th e nextminute you possess everything in theinfinite world and you at once havepeace and poise about you which signi-fies love and faith for and in the divineintelligence which healed you and madeyou whole. It is the knowledge thatcomes through power of man throughfaith until he recognizes the God withinand becomes Christlike in spirit and inmind. Th en it is that heaven opens andtruth comes to the sick, lame, sinnersand students. Th ey realize something

has happened,— a sense of divinity, andthat they are an instrument of Deity;that universal life flows through them,and a feeling of sublimity dwells in theirhearts.

I will now give you the greatest Hin-du suggestion I ever gave in public:When you take a suggestion from aMaster, healer, teacher, preacher or adose of medicine from a medico, it hav-ing been suggested by any of them thatyou would get such and such results:seize that thought, concentrate your  

mind on that thought, embrace that thought, hold it until it makes you happyand adorns you with a uniform of puritythat meets the approval of the guardianangel who watches over and guidesyour footsteps. W hen that is done, it is that which takes place when you are  healed. That statement, word for word,

has been testified to by more than a

million souls in the last hundred years

in occult schools.

I would not set a price on what I

learned in India, that is, if it would de-

prive me of its use and benefits. I mean,the knowledge which was both humanand divine, knowledge which wasgained by experience; that divine wis-dom which means divine intelligence, theinfinite understanding of basic prin-

ciples which are true in the animal king-dom, in the spiritual and all other king-doms by continuity through time andeternity in all circumstances.

I learned that mysticism is no mysteryto a student who understands the divinelaw of suggestion, because he knowshow to use suggestion to obtain andinterpret every phenomenon as a divinelaw, instead of socalled miracle.

The object of this article is to tell youhow I learned it and how I proved it.

W^hile I was in school in India theMasters called for volunteers to accom-pany the leading Master out of his bodyinto the spiritual and spend fortyeighthours behind the screen with the veillifted, flying like thought through in-finite space, investigating life beyondthis earth plane. It was there and thenthat J. M., J. S., a Hindu and I, fouranxious souls, fearless investigators, ac-cepted the invitation and qualified forprojection and suspended animation. Ican never forget that day, nor would Iif I could, when we left our bodies ina cool, ventilated room in the east wingof the temple, in care of one of theMasters. W e said to our Master andleader: “W here you lead us we will fol-low.” In the fortyeigh t hours that wewere gone out of our bodies our ex-periences were many, but they wereglorious and more than I can give youin this article, but perhaps ten minuteswill suffice to give you an idea of whatyou get through suspended animation. Iwould to God that I might turn on thedivine searchlight that illuminated the

golden stair and the ethereal spacesthrough which our leader took us andlet you see what we saw on that event-ful flight. You could then realize in allits wonderful glory the realities of lifeafter this departure instead of the vagueand indefinite idea you now have.

Those hours of suspended animationgave me the opportunity of my life tounderstand and realize what I had beenmany years studying, the things I hadcontemplated, concentrated on and vis-ualized but never positively knew or ex-

perienced until those fortyeight hourswhen I proved it unto myself.

One of the greatest truths I learnedwas that life is the visible expression of

spiritpower. Th at was where our God given spirits showed us that heavenlyplane where soul dwellers have psychicclairvoyance and realize it as their nor-mal conditions. It was during this timethat our Master showed us that thosewho were taught contemplation, concen-tration, visualization and meditation,found the secret key of Confidencewhich is the connecting link betweenknowledge and wisdom, which unlocksthe door of Knowledge and admits oneto the sacred chamber where many andvaried experiences are had in the schoolof Knowledge wherein you conceiveclearly all that the human mind canattain by experience. You are then giventhe key which unlocks the door of W is -dom. where, through meditation in thesacred chamber of Divine Intelligencewe realize our atonement with God andcomply with His divine law by furtherstudy of suggestion through concentra-tion, visualization, meditation and real-ization. Th en it came to pass that di-vine intelligence taught our souls how toreach forth and obtain the crowning

glory of man’s knowledge and God’swisdom. I, for the first time, becameconscious of a selfconsciousness and asI observed God's eternal infinitude Ihad the desire to follow my Master’ssuggestion. And, so it was, for with thesecret Key found in the school of W is -dom and the pass word, “Realization,”we were admitted to the door that ledon to the Temple of God where infinitelight, shining like golden chandeliersswinging from the infinite portals ofheaven, illuminating that bewildering

scene of enchantment so delightful,fascinating and enthralling, a fairylandof paradise.

W el l do I remember, it was there,with the secret Key, “Realization,” thatwe unlocked the door of Mysticism intothe sacred chamber of Complete Un-derstanding, and there we found theKey to Divine Wisdom with which wesolved the problems of Eternal Life. It

was then we sympathized with unbe-

lievers and turned to a plane or condi-

tion shown us by our leader, where we

viewed the Celestial Throne on which

was mounted a symbol of the Arc ofSafety, over it the Royal Arch in theseven colors of the rainbow and throughthis arch was woven a W or d thatthrilled us to the very verge of shoutingas we exclaimed with conscious con-sciousness: “Behold the LO S TW O R D ." W ith the Lost W ord we re-ceived the M aster Key. Th e RoyalArch in the colors of the rainbowlooked like a natural one in the sky,beautiful beyond description and westood revealed before the infinite intelli-gence as our celestial mind contactedthat scene. The eye of Sheva beheldthe whole of the law with no limitationbecause it was infinite, a vivid and posi-tive reality.

W e have been given the Lost W ordin the sixth degree of the secret orderbut it made but little impression uponus until we met it face to face. W ewere then and there told why manthought he lost the W or d, and why intruth and in fact it was never lost andnever will be as long as it dwells inman’s own bosom alone with him andGod. But when man becomes ignorantof his divine identity and wanders awayfrom his Garden of Paradise, tanglingthe threads of his divine inspiration, he

forgets the W or d and believes it lostuntil he has a doubt in his mind whichcauses him to stop and reflect andchange his course and concentrate onthat thouqht until he loses himself inthought. Th en comes the fourth dimen-sion— Divine Inspiration. The n comestruth and divine light illumines the wayto a wisdom of an enlightened soul go-ing forth in concentration, which meansdrawing to a center where God, en-closure of all continents, castes, creeds,and compassionators, and love coversall the world in existence . It is therethat you understand the journey of thesoul through every stage of life to thatuniversal soul where you find yourself,and rest in peace in the shelter of eter-nity where Jehovah dwells, never againto reincarnate and for the first time seeand realize the Lost W ord . It is thenwe are shown this most beautiful motto

revealed in the seven colors of the rain-

bow: “ IT IS F INISHED.”

we realized W H Y he is, and from thatday on through eternity there is nomystery, there are no miracles, andthere is no death. Th ere I S a God andthere IS a Fountainhead back of every-

thing. Infinite love and divine intelli-gence is the cause of God being ineverything that was ever created. Godwas that Fountainhead before anythingwas produced.

Before we left on our return to earthand to our bodies, we were admonishednot to listen to any suggestions butpeace and good will. W e were told thatthose which promote happiness, love,everything was pure to those who arepure. Th at G od ’s love was the onlypure love and all other loves were either

fondness, emotions, passions, admira-tion, or friendship. The re is but onelove in all this universe and that love isenough for eternity. W he n you lovedivinely you realize Gods supply ofgolden treasure. Divine love is the fruitof the spirit and binds up the woundsof humanity, holding nations togetherin the interest of humanity and bringspeace and prosperity to the world. It is the pulse of the world and the heart ofthe universe.

God’s love searches out the arid spots

of the human heart and like unto magic,it redeems humanity. Infinite love makesyou realize that in the invisible, uni-versal substance in which we live andmove and have our being, is every goodand perfect thing that man can desire.The divine principles of love never failto meet every demand of the heart andeliminate every sorrow.

The Tree of Life is a symbol, sym-bolizing Paradise and the generous fruitcontained is love. How long that lovewill await its fulfillment only the Re-cording Angels know. One thing more I must tell you. Therewas an infinite light so illuminating thatit reminded me of the Roentgen ray, forit laid our human and divine souls bareand developed us, like developing aphotograph into clear sight that wemight see ourselves as God sees us, our

inner selves, selfpcychic analysis wherewe could see the motive behind the deedand observe the environment of indi-vidual souls, knowing all and forgivingeverything.

In conclusion, my hope is that thisarticle on suspended animation has con-tained a few injunctions that will showyou a brighter light, a plainer road totravel in this material world. In grasp-ing the purpose and meaning of mysuggestions together with God’s divineinjunctions I hope that you will forgetthe popular, spectacular, and sensationalhypnotism that has caused much pre-

 judice among the unsophisticated, un-learned and uneducated people.

I never heard the word hypnotismused during my two and onehalf yearsstudy of philosophy in India, yet hyp-nosis is worth its weight in gold. Myangel mother tried to suggest a millionpurified, constructive thoughts into mysubconscious mind. Some of themworked over time more than she everknew. I sometimes think we are hypno-tized into this life, hypnotized all theway through it and sometimes out of it.Suggestion produces action.

How can you do what I have done?First, memorize it to your mind; second,mind must convey it to your intellect,intellect conveys it to your understand-ing self, then self conveys it to the Godwithin and that Divine within conveys it to that Universal Soul. N D E R the heading of a“Health Bulletin forTeachers,” a smallpamphlet has beenissued by the M etro-

politan Life InsuranceCo., of New York, andcirculated among theschool teachers of NewYork City, bearing the

interesting subject title of “HealthSuperstitions.” This pamphlet is un-doubtedly another instrument in thewarfare against American freedom inthe choice of doctors and systems for thecure of diseases. In other words, thewar against our personal liberties andpersonal rights in deciding how we shall

be cured of any illness and who shall

assist us in this curing, is being aug-mented by new ammunition and wagedin a very positive manner.

It appears now that this old life in-surance organization has ventured into

the public schools and is seeking tocarry the warfare against therapeuticand hygienic liberty, into the homes ofthe school pupils, via the teachers of thepupils. Alread y hundreds of teachersare protesting, for it is quite obvious thatthe “Health Bulletin for Teachers” isnot intended for teachers alone but toguide and direct them in their discoursesand contacts on the subject of healthand disease in the lives of the pupils andmembers of their families. In fact, thispamphlet dares to suggest that “if pupils

are asked to hand in anonymous lists of

household remedies and preventatives ofdiseases,’’ much light would be thrownupon the various methods and devicesused by the parents of the pupils in theexercise of their constitutional rights to

choose whatever they believe is best forthem. Such a practice would be danger-ous, indeed, and would lead to an indexof our beliefs and practices in regardto health and eventually to a censure ofthese things.

It is strange, indeed, to read some ofthe statements in this particular bulletindealing with “Health Superstitions,"which is Bulletin No. 22, issued in June,1931. The first subject discussed isMag ical Medicine. Under this subjectthe unknown author of the pamphlet

discusses whether diseases can becaused by spiritual agencies, or spiritualor psychic conditions, or not. Th en hemakes this interesting statement: “Thefact that we recover spontaneously frommany disorders, and the fact that otherconditions are helped by the power ofsuggestion, account for the apparentevidence in favor of such magicore

Further on in the critical commentswe find a diatribe against patent medi-cines and nostrums. The author states

that in a recent investigation in theMiddle W es t in one rural county it wasfound that almost onethird of all themoney spent for the care of illness wasspent for drugs, and even in large citiesit was found that as high as onefourthwas spent for drugs. The author thenmakes this statement: “The facts arethat only one or two dozen drugs arereally of proved value as having a spe-cific curative influence.” In criticisingthe buying of medicines without a doc-tor’s prescription, the author says,“only a skilled physician can know what

drugs are safe to use in a given case andthe sensible rule is to use medicine onlyon a doctor ’s order. An y medicinewhich is advertised in newspapers ormagazines for the general public shouldbe avoided unless ordered by the doc-tor, for one can be almost certain thatit is either harmful or useless or a morecostly form of some common drug.”

In criticising the use of electrical ormechanical devices the author takes aspecial shot at light therapy. He says,“In the hands of a physician this type

of treatment has a very real value forcertain conditions, but it may do harm,if indiscriminately used by the layman.”

Once more, leading to the subject ofspiritual and mental systems, the author

plainly shows that his great fear lies inthis direction for here he is the most in-sistent and the most critical. He cannotavoid admitting that many of the popu-lar beliefs about the curing of diseasesare associated with the power of sug-gestion, or the creation in the patient ofthe belief or conviction of cure. Theauthor knows that he cannot deny thetestimony of millions in regard to theefficiency of mental and spiritual sys-tems and, therefore, he very adroitlyadmits that in the use of mental or spir-itual systems, “we are dealing with aforce that is of incalculable value whenrightly used. The mind has great influ-ence over the body and. in many condi-tions, faith, hope, confidence, and re-lease from fear may be important ele-ments in recovery. . . . But the point isthat there are many other conditionswhich cannot be helped at all by atti-tudes of mind— conditions in whichmore and more organic damage will con-tinue to be done day by day until someradical steps are taken along medical orsurgical lines.”

W e are not representatives of anyschool or system of healing. The R osi-crucian organization is not a healingorganization. It is not attempting, norhas it ever attempted in the past, totrain and send forth practitioners of anew or unique healing system. Ou rorganization has publicly and privatelyendorsed and recommended every goodand sane system of therapy. It has espe-cially laid emphasis upon the fact thatno individual should attempt to treathimself or cure himself in any serious or

puzzling condition except under theguidance of an eminent and qualifiedand welltrained and registered physi-cian. W e have recommended and en-dorsed the use of surgery when surgeryis indicated by competent authority. W eadmit and will continue to admit thatdrugs in the form of extracts from na-ture’s products are helpful in many

cases. W e co nstantly advise many who

write to us for suggestions regarding

their health to consult the very best

registered physician in their community.

W e cannot be accused, therefore, oftaking up one side of this warfare indefense of any particular system oftherapy, or of being personally interested or biased. In fact, in our present

attitude of defense, we feel that we aredefending the honest, sincere, and ear-nest medical physicians, as well as thosewho are graduates of a recognized drugless school or institute. W e know fromhundreds of letters which we receivedas a result of our previous article on“Drugs. Devils, and Doctors.” in thismagazine, that hundreds of highly in-telligent and eminently earnest medicalphysicians do not like or approve of thepresent propaganda against medicalliberty or, we should say, therapy

liberty, that is being waged by some or-ganizations in the name of all medicalmen. Th ese medical men, however, darenot protest too strongly against thisunreasonable war because their verylicenses and future privilege to practicewill be at stake.

The fact of the matter is that the useof medicine and drugs is becoming lessand less popular in the Western Worldtoday, and the average intelligent andrational medical physician is notalarmed by this but is cooperating with

the public’s desires and securing farbetter results by cooperating withthis public attitude than by fightingagainst it. W e know of hundreds ofmedical men who have more practice,more patients, and a greater prestigeand influence in their communities, witha larger percentage of cures, since theyhave abandoned the enforcement ofmedical therapy and adapted themselvesto the beliefs and convictions of theirpatients. After all it is the duty of themedical man to cure or help his patient.It is not his duty to change the belief,

the conviction, or hope of a patient, butto give him the utmost help and, evenby the admission of the author of thispamphlet, we see that the attitude of thepatient is an important matter.

If the patient is one who believes ina certain system or a modification of acertain system, and has found that thispractice helps him to maintain health orprevent disease or cure illness, then itis the duty of some physician to coop-erate with that patient in the practiceof such a system. Taking this unknown

author’s statements at their face value,

 just see what we have. He tries to tellus that drugs are very dangerous ifbought in the drug store, just becausethey are without a doctor's prescriptionand without a doctor having been paid

a fee to recommend them. He admitsthat some drugs are very dangerous andthat all drugs may be very dangerous ifimproperly used. He wants to advise us,however, that a medical physician is soinfallibly trained, or has such an infalli-ble knowledge, that he of all otherphysicians cannot make a mistake in therecommendation of drugs.

He also tells us that the mere factthat a drug is advertised, or any remedyor preventative of disease is advertisedand sold to the public, it is either harm-

ful, or useless, or costs us more moneythan it is worth. Can he claim thatstatement to be true of such an excellentpreventative as Listerine? It is true thatwe may pay more for Listerine in itsconvenient bottles and packages thanwe would pay for it at some wholesalehouse, but can every person go to awholesale house and get it or get theingredients from which it is made, andwill it be sold in such convenient formsand with such complete instructions andadvice for its use?

The American people are not reluct-ant to pay for service and the averagepreparation of a remedial or preventa-tive nature sold in the drug store is pre-pared in a manner and delivered in suchform as to constitute a real convenienceand, therefore, a real service to the cus-tomer. It is true that women can buytea in bulk form very cheaply, butnevertheless they prefer to buy the littlepackages of tea containing the bags with just sufficient amount of tea in each bagto conveniently hang in a pot and make

a proper brew. Th e tea in such formcosts more than the bulk tea but thereis service and convenience in the smallpackage, for which the customer is will-ing to pay.

Listerine and many similar prepara-tions are worth their price because ofthe convenient manner in which theyare sold and the convenience with whichthey can be used.

The same criticism has been madeabout a salve which is called Poslim.The same formula has often been rec-

pounded by druggists and sold at sev-entyfive cents for a small amount, plusthe fee to the doctor for the prescrip-tion, but when Poslim is sold direct tothe customer in a neat can, with an

interesting book of instructions andhelpful advice regarding the care of theskin and the use of Poslim, it is con-demned by the medical fraternity asbeing a “patent” remedy and thereforeharmful or useless. “It is not a scienti-fic remedy!” cries one physician aboutPoslim, because it is sold by the drugstores to the public.

Yet that remedy, like hundreds ofothers, is manufactured by a firm thatis welladvanced in the science ofchemistry and is made as expertly and

as scientifically as any salve could be'compounded by a druggist, who is try-ing to read a conglomeration of hiero-glyphs on a physician’s prescriptionpaper. If you can get into the confi-dence of some of these druggists youwill come to learn that the averagephysician is not an expert in chemistryand that his prescription or recom-mendation often consists of impossiblecombinations, and that after you haveleft the prescription with the druggisthe has to call the physician on the phoneand suggest to him that certain thingsin the prescription will have to bechanged since they cannot be mixed orcompounded or associated in the man-ner he suggests.

This is not intended to be a criticismof the physician, for a man who givessufficient time and thought, as well ascareful study, to the nature of diseaseand to all the subjects of anatomy,.,physiology, pathology, and diagnosis,should not be expected to be a masterchemist and pharmacist. In fact, the

average welltrained and long experi-enced physician has lost so much faithin the instructions he received regardingdrugs and the preparation of remediesthat he seldom reads on this subject anylonger and does not attempt to keepabreast of the changing principles inmedicine.

W e see, therefore, that the criticismof the use of drugs, because they arebought without a doctor’s prescription,is just an attempt to change the habitof the public from buying drugs by one

method to buying them by another

method. It is not an attempt to eliminatethe habit of using drugs whatsoever.How many deaths have you heard of inyour community which have resultedfrom the use of standard, welladver-

tised, wellmade, and universally useddrugstore remedies, as compared withdeaths which have occurred whilepatients were under treatment and un-der the care of a recognized, licensed,medical practitioner? If the use of ad-vertised remedies and preventatives washalf as dangerous as this pamphletwould try to lead us to believe we wouldhear of deaths resulting therefrom sofrequently that we would have a naturalhesitancy in buying anything that wedid not know or understand in its na-ture and effect.

The truth of the matter is that wetake in blind faith and really know lessabout the remedies, the drugs, andchemicals, that the average physicianrecommends to us than we do about themany standard and wellmade remediesand preventatives that are sold throughthe dependable drugstores. The publicgenerally knows more about the con-tents and the nature of the tabletsknown as Bayer’s Aspirins than itknows about the pills that the averagephysician prescribes. The very bestmanufacturers of standard remedies andpreventatives know that they must winthe trust and confidence of the publicby advertising their products in an ana-lytical manner, freely exposing and re-vealing the ingredients, giving theformula, telling where the ingredientscame from, what they will do, and whatthey will not do. Do the physicians ofthe old medical systems attempt to dothis? W h y, even the more modern andpopular forms of castor oil, put up in aconvenient and tasteless form, are far

more desired by the public than the oldfashioned castor oil prescribed by thephysician.

The author also admits that light andsuggestion and a regulation of diet andmanner of living are helpful, if recom-mended and used by a skilled physician.This is perfectly true, but how many ofthe skilled medical physicians recom-mend or use these methods? If one is

convinced that light in its various colors

and forms is helpful as a remedy or

preventative, one is forced to go to a

light therapy specialist to get the verybest of such treatment, because the aver-age medical physician does not believein it and is not qualified to give suchtreatments. If one believes in the powerof prayer, or the power of suggestion,or the power of mind over matter, heis forced to go to a specialist in theselines, for he can find but a few of themedical physicians in each communitywho are skilled in these things andknow when and where and how to usethem.

If one believes that certain abnormalconditions of the muscles, or the tissues,or of the anatomy are responsible foreffects upon the nerves, which produceother conditions constituting illness ordisease, he is forced to go to an osteo-path, or chiropractor or a specialist ofsome kind to have treatment in accord-ance with such a belief or conviction,because the average medical physiciandoes not pretend to be qualified or pre-pared to give such treatments.

The author of this pamphlet admitsthat these things are of “incalculablevalue when rightly used.” W h o is theone to rightly use them? Th e physicianwho represents exclusively the school of

medicine and drugs and who will sup-port the issues of such a pamphlet asthis one before me? Does the author ofthis pamphlet mean that no matter whatwe may want in the way of treatmentour only ultimate resource is the medicalphysician? Is it possible that these menare now being trained in every field oftherapy and that they are capable of

 judging which method we require and ofgiving us expert treatment in any fieldof therapy? Certain ly, this is a newclaim for the medical profession.

The truth of the matter remains.Thousands upon thousands of personsin every part of the United States andthroughout the Western World arefinding relief from illnesses and finding'new life and health through newermethods, and they are gradually aban-doning not the use of drugs, not the useof medicine, or surgery, but they areabandoning an arbitrary system of the-rapy that is narrow, bigoted, and effi-cient in only a small percentage of thecases.

The average American citizen or per-son of the Western World is not be-

coming an addict to any one system oftherapy, but is becoming a supporterand patron of a combination of systems.He is not depending exclusively uponhis own diagnosis, or his own judgmentof what he should use, or what systemhe should apply, but he is exercising hisrights and privileges to select one sys-tem or another, or to select all of themand test all of them until he is well.

Granting that it is true, as the authorof this pamphlet states, that we recoverspontaneously from many disorders orthat nature steps in and makes a cure,regardless of whether we do anythingor not, the fact remains that it is betterfor such a patient to be using less drugsand giving nature a chance to heal or

cure in a natural manner than to be aslave to any one system.

W e all know that the average drugless physician, regardless of what hissystem may be, has few patients cometo him in the early stages of theirtrouble. W hen such a physician canhave patients who are just in the firststages of some illness or disorder hispercentages of cures are extremely high.But the average patient who comes tothe drugless physician is one who comesafter all medical methods have been

tried and even surgery given a trial andhe comes with hope almost gone andwith a chronic condition that is hard tobattle with. Thus the drugless physi-cians are handicapped at the very outsetin the work they are trying to do. Thatthey make a high percentage of curesunder such circumstances is excellenttestimony to their skill and the efficiencyof their systems. But each cure undersuch circumstances becomes a livingmonument of endorsement and praiseand this is responsible for the wide-

spread faith in drugless methods.As long as men and women live they

will exercise their rights and privilegesof choosing what they wish to eat andthe manner in which they wish to live,and consequently they will choose whatsystem of therapy and what physicianthey wish to have in connection withtheir illnesses, and another ten years willsee a further abandonment of the pres-ent day medical system. as ready to recommend and use a mental

diet or living, a recommendation in themanner of thinking and believing, anda recommendation of light or physicaladjustment, massage or bathing, highfrequency or low frequency, electronic

reactions, or magnetic references, oranything else, along with the recom-mendation of surgery and some forms ofmedicine.

In behalf of the profession of therapy,generally, we are going to continuefighting for freedom and personalliberty. W hen man comes to learn thespiritual, psychic, mental, and Cosmiclaws governing his life, as well as thephysical and chemical, he will come toknow that diseases can be caused bythese higher and more subtle influencesas well as by the grosser earthly influ-

ences, and that the real remedy and pre-ventative lies in all of these fields and

not in any one of them. W e do recom-mend, however, that definite schoolsand definite systems of therapy beestablished and standardized and thatno one be permitted to practice without

being duly qualified, examined, andlicensed, but we also insist that the ex-amining boards and licensing boards ineach state and county shall be composedof broadminded, tolerant individuals,representing all of these systems, andthat the unfair methods of having amedical board composed of advocates ofmedicine to examine and pass uponqualifications of nonmedical practi-

tioners shall be abandoned or modified

which is just beginning and will last for

The Need For A God

S T H E R E a true needfor God and what isthat need? Th is is notan atheistic discourse,nor is the above ques-tion intended to beblasphemous, but, isGod, as conceived ofby the average re-ligious sectarian, a

necessity? Do the Gods of our mental

image add anything to the progress ofthe modern time? I say Gods, because itis not merely an assumption to say thatout of every group of ten persons, ninecould not, in the same number of words,so concisely explain the God that was on the horizon of their thoughts, as tomake their explanations concurrent.

Thus, it is a fair conclusion that God,

at least as far as the humble attempt to

depict Him orally is concerned, is an in-

dividual reality and not a general reality.

As to God, or Gods, adding to the prog-ress of the modern times, we generallyall concede that progress in this age,perhaps not unlike other ages in this re-gard, means certain generally recognizedconditions or effects.

It is peculiar to note that Mr. andMrs. Average Citizen, regardless ofsect, or creed, can more easily describe what constitutes the progress of civil-ization than they can convey in a com-

prehensible manner their conception ofthe God they accept. Mr. Citizen willtell you that the improvements in the se-curing of public peace and safety is onephase of modern progress, that the con-stant expansion of luxuries that have  become so universally accepted, as to beconsidered necessities, is another indica-tion of the trend of modern progress.

But, again, what do the Gods, or God,if you please, of the people of the eracontribute to this modern progress? Cancertain things be relegated to the accom-

plishments of the God of the presentday mass? Can the average devout Jewor Gentile, Confucist or Buddhist, ex-pound the contributions of his God tothe effect that the God of his concept

has brought about certain absoluteeffects? Can he relate definitely any-thing to the progress of the day, thatwill let him say, “My God, the one Imentally picture or believe in hasbrought this or that about in this or thatparticular manner?’’ If they cannot sub-stantiate the existence of their God, theusefulness and necessity of that God,then we come to the crux of our argu-ment, the need for their God.

Is it possible that there are, today,millions who speak of God, who accept

a God, and still have no need for Him?Has the modern man or woman longsince evolved beyond the need of a God?Is God but a remnant of a phase ofman's early evolution, which he hassince supplanted with a more serviceableand applicable philosophy? Does Godmerely cling to man as the fragrance ofa heavy perfume does to one who earlyin the morn walked in a rose garden andrecalls his delightful experience only bythe vague scent impression he received?Has God become to man a superstition,

an inherent fear, or is God but a tradi-tion that must be accepted? Truly , havewe a need for this God?

I believe that most psychologistsagree that human necessities are notthose things that the individual visual-izes as contributing to his degree of hap-piness. The human can reason thatthere are a million and one factors thatwould add to his state of pleasure, butpsychologically speaking, they are notnecessities. Th ey are but an appendageto his normal state. A necessity, then,

is that which is essential to one’s normalstate. It is not the result of a longing,the product of imagination or reasoning,but instead the product of instinctivedesire.

A normal, human being is one, pre-sumably, who has the average coordi-nation between his physical and mentalself. W he n the equilibrium of this aver-age is disturbed, the result is an abnor-mal or subnormal being. Nature, evi-dently contemplating the eccentricitiesand irrational processes of reasoning of

the human mind that would prevent the

human from taking the necessary pre-cautions for his own welfare, therefore,instilled in his being certain primitive,fundamental instincts. Th e demands ofthese instincts compel recognition. They

cannot be dissuaded, conjured, or com-mended. Th ey must be satisfied. Failureto admit of their insistent requirements,produce an effect that becomes an irri-tant to the human, increasing in intensityuntil either selfdestruction or gratifica-tion of the instinct takes place. W e areall too well acquainted with some ofthese natural desires, such as hunger,thirst, sleep, and others.

The real necessities of life, therefore,are those things that satisfy instinctive,human, primitive emotions. All things

additional to these absolute necessitiesare not primarily, human essentials, butundoubtedly the demands of habit,which merely appear as necessities untilwe are compelled to deny them.

Is God, therefore, in the light of theabove, an instinct, an inherited emo-tion, an urge, an impelling force? IsGod a necessity to the normalcy of man,whether that normalcy be of a savage orof the modern civilized man? Th e his-toric era of man, that era when man leftwritten records of his exploits, as re-ligion, literature and society, is limitedto approximately five or six thousandyears. W he reas anthropologists informus that the event of the Homoprimigenous (man) is established at aboutfifty thousand to one hundred thousandyears ago.

From this it would appear that weare extremely handicapped in determin-ing just when man acquired God, if hedid acquire Him. As we trace back tothe earliest civilization, we find a God,

or Gods, existent. W e find in religionsmonotheism, polytheism and animism,all prevalent, sometimes concurrent. W efeel at a loss at first, when we finallyreach the earliest known records of man,whether to come to the conclusion thatthe conception of God sprang into beingsuddenly, or whether it had existed pre-viously, of which no tangible recordsare known to exist.

Let us consider the early Babylonianconception of God, as a means of deter-mining whether God was added to

man’s requirements to fill a need then

felt, and which became accepted to theextent that the line of subsequent civil-ization, accepted the idea of a God asa tradition which they interpreted intheir own manner. The early Babylonianreligion of the higher type, not relatedto Shamanism, or the earlier forms ofmagic, appears to be polytheistic in one sense and monotheistic in another. Aswith many primitive religions, it con-sists of the worship of nature. T he im-pressive, Infinite forces of nature andtheir multiphenomena were the sourceof worship. Na ture was supreme. Itwas the factor above and beyond men.It became simultaneously exalted andfeared. The forces of nature pervadedall.

It was, therefore, an appeal to logic,

at least to the Babylonian, to say thatnature was the creative force of the uni-verse, anteceding all life and constitut-ing the beginning. In this sense naturebecame a monotheistic form of religion,a one God, a sole God, but this mono-theistic conception was rather held andaccepted, than actually alluded to. Com-monly, this force of nature was con-sidered triune, consisting of the heaven,earth and water. Th ese three were in-corporated in the actual hymns andrituals and were distinct Gods, makingthe Babylonian religion in practice,

polytheistic. These Gods had the sameweaknesses, morals, and habits as thehumans, from the Babylonian concept.They married, had sons and daughters,friends and enemies.

W e find, therefore, that the earlyBabylonian religion w^as also anthropo-morphic. Animism had never been in-troduced and was not, therefore, asso-ciated with this Babylonian concept. Itwas not held that Nature, or her phases,had a spirit or soul or a Divine Ghostwhich entered any being or any animate

or inanimate thing. It was not held thatsalvation in another world as a rewardwould be forthcoming to fervent wor-shippers of the Gods. It was, rather,merely the recognition of a superiorforce. The rituals and ceremonies indicated that there existed merely a pact

of a venture. If the Gods failed in theirpatrony, as punishment for so doing,they were shown utter indifference andthere was no further display of devotion.

This especially applied to the minorGods and Goddesses. Little spiritualsignificance can be associated with theGods of the early Babylonians, even the sense of Divinity, because the flaws pe-culiar to human nature were alike attrib-uted to the Gods. It is remarkable, how-ever, to note the beauty of some of theirhymns. The y are comparable with ourBiblical psalms. Tak e this plea of for -giveness to the moon God, as an ex-ample:

“To my merciful God I turn me,asking aid, and sighing.

The feet of my Goddess I graspwith tears.

Oh Lord, overthrow not thy ser-vant.

Grasp his hand when he has fallenin the water.

Turn into grace the sin which Ihave committed.

May the wind bear away the mis-deeds which I have done.

Tear Jike a cloth my many evils.

W h at impressions do we gather fromthis resume? Tw o outstanding ones,FIRST: That the conception of a Goddid not originate with the early civiliza-tions, the Egyptians, Babylonians,Assyrians. It evidently was a patrimonyfrom a still earlier existence of man.SECOND: That the conception of Godwas not purely religious, neither was itwholly traditional. It seemed to be anecessity, a need to satisfy a primitive,inherent instinct, a recognition of apower or force of which nature was thepredominant part. It appeared to be an

endeavor to express one’s loyalty to thatruling force and, at the same time, toutilize that force for one’s own better-ment, whether that betterment be selfishor not. W he the r or not instinctive emo-tion W A S the incentive for the incep-tion of these Gods or merely tradition,we must go further to determine.

The aboriginal of central Australia isperhaps the most rudimentary of alltribes of beings existing today. Ourscientists, anthropologists, consider him

as being of about the same degree ofevolution as the man of the early Paleo-lithic age. Exten sive research has beenmade for the last century by eminentmen of both hemispheres to ascertain

the religion of these people. Someauthorities, like Frazer and Spencer,disagree with the opinion of the majorityof these people. Interest has been cen-tered in these people, because they arean example of prehistoric man, and thattheir religious, moral, and ethical views,would be akin to those held by man be-fore chronology or the era of history.

W e will briefly study the principalfindings of these scientists to aid us inour search for the need of a God. Thedifference of opinion among some of

the sciences is that the God of theseprimitive people is a loaned God, thatis, that they might have garnered theirconception from some missionaries. Thisis stoutly denied and argued against bythe majority as not only improbable, butimpossible. A preponderance of evi-dence is given to refute the claim, so wewill not consider that phase of the sub- ject .

It is interesting to note, however,what gave rise to that opinion. It wasthe conception of God held by these

people which was so high, that oneeminent scientist referred to it as “Arough draft of the highest form of re-ligion,” and seemed as though it mighthave been acquired. Outwardly, how-ever, these people conducted or per-formed so few ceremonies that somescientists are apt to say, as Spencer saidat first, “It was not imagined that therewere men without any socalled religiousideas.” Through much sacrifice, effort,diligent study, and by constant associa-tion with these people, it was found thatthey maintained a secret school of mys-teries not unlike in principle to otherancient schools of mysteries known to-day. W om en and children were barredfrom initiation into these mysteries. Thewomen were ignorant of the rituals andeven of the God.

The religion consisted of the belief inwhat they pleased to term the AllFath er. His name was taboo from men-tion except at sacred occasions. He wasconsidered the maker or creator of allthat had been or ever would be. He wasconsidered, as one of the aborigines putit, “to go anywhere and to do any-

thing.” No sacrifices were offered to thisDiety, as he was all in all and in needof nothing which man could hope tooffer him. He, and those after deathwho aspired to his plane or abode, if you

please, lived in “A great sky dwellingplace” called Ulthaana of the heavens.He was also a watcher of the morals ofthe people and a severe though just

 judge. It is truly not surprising thatthese beliefs were referred to as “Arough draft of the highest form of re-ligion.”

Let us note the virtues of their belief.Th eir God was a supreme being. Hewas a creator. He was everlasting. Hewas before the universe; man had toaspire to him. He governed the morals

of the people. He dwelled in a placeabove and beyond the material. Mancould offer him nothing but goodness.

Assuming now that these people werethe earliest race and type of man, wecannot say that their God was born oftradition. Certa inly their God and re-ligion was not an accepted custom,descending through the centuries. W a sit, then, instinctive? W a s it a longing, acrying within, a surging emotion, as im-pelling and as overwhelming as thirst andhunger? W as it a necessity that they

create a God to give expression to thisurge within to gain peace of mind? Per-haps it was naught but a fear of anomnipotence, felt more than known.Perhaps the need to express the longingof the soul, so that peace within couldbe had. Or, as Ridley says, “Did theyhave supernormal revelation as the He-brews claim of their faith?” It wouldappear to be a spiritual urge and an in-telligence from within, giving vent torestlessness, until some outer form ofrecognition was established.

The man and woman of today, the“God fearer,” is not their God, but apatrimony, an inheritance from the dimrecesses of ages gone by? Is their Godnot extended to them in an entirety, en-shrouded with a halo of tradition; glori-fied by countless tongues: accompaniedby music, the nativity of the soul ofgenius: beautiful by art, the inspirationof centuries of devotion; heralded byliterature, the results of the most profi-cient in all ages?

The man of today appears to acceptall of this, but adds nothing to this

magnificent, complete conception ofGod which is G IV E N H IM . Is God,then, but a tradition of our age, onethat is so intriguing, so mystifying, soappealing, and yet so vague that ratherthan penetrate the veil, we let it adornus?

The age of today proffers perfectedinstitutions of government, whose ma-chinery administers justice to man. Itssociety has drawn a scale of conventionsthat purport to keep man within thebounds of harmony with his fellow man.Its science, art, and kaleidoscopicmethods of education bring him fameand fortune. The vicissitudes of hisdaily philosophy permit him to interprethis instincts and emotions as he pleases.

W hy, then, does the man of todaycling so tenaciously to his Go d? Docsit not seem an incongruity? Some, pro-claimed as prominent in the academicfields of psychology, say that environ-ment is the contributing factor; that weare accustomed to subjectively acceptthings as natural to our state duringchildhood, before the objective mind iscapable of reasoning against obviousconditions to the contrary.

In other words, we are the counter-part of environment; that we are butunshapen clay in the hands of the sculp-

tor and that our contacts in childhoodwith people, animals, customs, beliefsreligions, and even the concepts of God,mold our character and stabilize ourreasoning. Eve n though man doessyllogistical reasoning, we still invari-ably reason inductively, that is, back tothe starting point or cause, when weconfront something new or strange inour experiences. Thu s, early in life, be-ing faced with the duty of a belief in aGod, we gregariously accept the faith orbelief of our father and our father'sfather, friend or relative. W e seem to

sense a moral protection and possess afeeling of satisfaction, of having per-formed a responsible duty in the easiest,yet proper way, like tipping one’s hat asthe flag goes by.

Thus, early in life, we adorn our-selves with the vestments of some re-ligion or faith of our choice . A choiceapparently born, not of a natural pro-pensity or spiritual urge, but rather asa pressure brought from without. It is

comparable to the selection of a suit ofclothes by the pressure of opinion ofsociety, the cut of style alone being op-tional.

Still, an intelligence that, for example,can miraculously develop such astound-ing mechanical devices and advancewith such rapidity as mankind has inthe last century, which advancement hasbeen unequalled in stride, except per-haps in the century, thousands of yearsago, when man in the period of one hun-dred years advanced from the humblestructures of mud bricks and caves tothe enormous architecture such as pyra-mids at the beginning of the pyramidage, is surely an intelligence which is worthy of being considered more thana S L A V E T O T R A D IT I O N .

There is a reason why man accepts,as he would a cloak, the religion of hisforebears. That reason, it has been said,is because of the enforcement of a moralcode. If man and woman, the compo-nents of society, are to dwell togetheras a harmonious whole, there must becertain restrictions, each individual can-not exercise, without discretion or con-sideration of his fellow beings, his everydesire. The inevitable and logical resultwould be selfdestruction and un-doubtedly annihilation, thus barriershave been established, whose flexibility

is due to many things. Th ese barriersare termed moral codes which imposeupon the adherent such limitations asare considered in the light of theirauthority best for the welfare of man.

These moral codes, peculiar to note,have always a religious significance. Amoral code is expounded usually in somesacred writings, which are a nucleus ofa faith. Interesting to note also, is thefact that there is a confliction betweenthese various moral codes, because thesacred writings themselves vary in theirnature. Th e book of Koran and the

Christian Bible both contain command-ments for the proper virtue of man, butstrict obedience to one or the otherwould be apt to make one a sinner inview of the opposite.

Perhaps one of the greatest virtues ofmankind, and one undoubtedly that isoutstanding in placing man on his pin-nacle in contrast to other animals, is hisidealism. Man possesses that rarefaculty of imagining or imaging, of pro-

 jectin g his thoughts in advance, just ashe is able to go back through the pro-cess of memory. Is there a human soprimitive, so coarse or profane, that hasnot known an ideal, something finer,

greater, more powerful, beautiful, orlearned than himself? Is not man able,through a most remarkable method oftransmutation, to take the figments ofhis thought and, in the crucible of hismind, make a demonstration of mentalalchemy? From the minds of even themost lowly have come illuminating con-cepts— ideals— the stepping stones ofthe human race.

Since man, apparently, at least, fromour above analysis, accepts a moralcode mostly because of custom, he then

feels it proper to conceive of some beingor power as exemplifying that code. Hemust have an ideal. It is extrem ely diffi-cult for man to raise himself above theexperience of his sense impressions.Even his most noble ideals must beclothed in an allegory that resemblessomething that he can associate withthings of the mundane, the world heunderstands. A noble, glorious, divineperson is mentally conceived of, not un-like himself in image, who mentally be-comes the ideal of man’s moral code.

Every virtue expounded by the code isparticipated in by the ideal because itexalts the ideal.

Unfortunately, however, each indi-vidual does not create his own ideal toserve in this sacred place. His ideal, likethe moral code which he graciouslyaccepts, is an inheritance. His father'sGod and his father’s father’s God, be-comes the blessed guardian of the vir-tues of a higher life. Much of the in-tolerance and bigotry that might encom-pass his parents faith, he alike accepts.

He resents the questioning of any of thedoctrines of his faith, or the interpreta-tion of the God he has accepted, not be-cause he has come to K N O W that Godand through such Infinite contact hasexperienced what he only before hadbelieved, but merely because it affectshis pride, his human ego, to have chal-lenged his judgment or the judgment ofhis kinsmen.

Man, then, seems to become a smugmember of society. Automatically, onemight say, he has accepted a prescribed

faith, one that has been prepared for

him. He accepts a God not as he hascome to K N O W him, but rather as ithas been prepared for his acceptance bysomeone else. He is content to feelsatisfied and assured of his righteous

 judgment in the selection of his faith,even when his neighbor may differ fromhim on every doctrine of religious belief.His neighbor may be an adherent of afaith as recognized and as establishedas his own, but as different in nature asdaylight from darkness. The incongruitytroubles him not at all. The insistentclaimants of the different faiths do notdisturb him, nor cause him to realizethat there can be but ONE GOD andnot the many varied Gods of the multireligions.

To such a man or woman, is there aneed for their God? God, to such an in-dividual, is not an experience, but rathera magnificent picture or ideal that hasbeen transplanted in his consciousness.It has not been born from the germ ofthought, spiritual perception, or aspira-tion. God, to such an individual, is nota guide or Infinite Master whom onemay call a companion, but just a stabiliz-ing force. It is merely a means of keep-ing him walking the straight path ofsociety. He can change it as often as he

wishes, and as long as it serves the pur-pose of an Omnipotent ideal, he is con-tent to go to his grave with no furthercontact with this God that he has taken to himself.

I say taken to himself, because cer-tainly he has not developed this Godfrom within. T o such a man or womanno praise should go. merely because ofhomage they periodically pay by par-ticipation in numerous rites and thesupport of the exoteric ritual for thereason that they are not primarily devo-tional. Th e absolute lack, in the major-ity of instances, of a knowledge of theirGod and the methodical manner of theirdevotion is indicative of an inherentfear, rather than something born of in-spiration. Their God has become tothem a champion of a great ethical andmoral code. They accept him becausehe is an integral part of their faith. Theonly impelling urge, associated withtheir God, is a fear of this Omnipotencewhich they do not understand. Alas ,they even see no need for an under-standing. The y merely follow the

theology of their faith with its dogma

and creed. It is difficult for those whohave merely acquired God to see thenecessity for Him. Th ey live their dailylives so completely devoid of any com-prehension of His multiworks and Hisall pervading intelligence that theyknow naught of their relation to Him,yet they fear Him.

Is not always the unknown, the mys-terious, the veiled, feared, even thoughintriguing? Th e man who has not con-ceived his God psychically, but who,like every human being, senses an intelli-gence in his being, supresses this innerpropensity as something to be shunnedand dreaded. W h at is the result of thisfear? It creates a constantly wideningbreach between his God and himself.He places God away off, apart from

himself and the universe, as a judge ofhis faults and erroneous ways, but neverappreciates Him as a Divine Conscious-ness of which he is but an extendedpart. Therefo re, God never becomes tohim a Cosmic force of all in all, a forcethat he can direct for his personal pro-gression and evolution.

To thousands, therefore, today, thereis no need for a God; that is, for their  God, this erroneous, outer adoption of aDivinity. Th ey could substitute equallyas well, the fear of public opinion, the

power of state, or the resentment ofsociety. Any of those fears, if suffi-ciently embued in their consciousness,would serve monitorially in their per-sonal conduct, keeping them walking thestraight and narrow path, if that is alltheir concept of God means.

Truly, however, there are many towhom religion is more than a personalcode of ethics and morals. To themalso, God is more than a champion ofthe code and a judge of man's allegianceto it. God is within man, the Divine in-

telligence or extended consciousness ofGod pervading every cell in man. Itcannot be removed without destroyingthe vital force that solidifies his wholebeing into a living, breathing soul, asdistinguished from a mere human me-

chanism. God is life to man. Th e un

him, but it blinds him to the real Godwhich he should and could perceive. Itis these substitutions of God that hasled man far astray from a true inceptionof God within his being.

If a child, born in a modern metro-polis, could be reared on an island fromsix months of age on, the veneer ofcivilization would be noticeably absentat adolescence. Man is not, biologically,civilized. The characteristic constituentsof civilization are not transmitted fromone generation to another. Th ey arenot, therefore, hereditary. Th e indi-vidual reared on the island would haveno acquired God, no customs, rituals,conventions, creeds, or dogmas to pro-claim. Before two years had elapsedafter adolescence, however, a rough

draft of a religion would emerge fromthe soul of that isolated being. Crude,perhaps, weird, yet impressively sublimewould be the rites of worship.

From whence would come the seedthat would grow into such a flower ofspiritual fragrance? It would be born ofnecessity, as God is ever such to man.Alone within himself, as with everybeing, regardless of outer intelligence,the thoughts of man turn inward. Manindulges in introspection. He feels astrange sense of oneness with the uni-

verse. Th e sounds of nature, her moods,her aweinspiring phenomena, seem towrap a cloak about man and embracehim. He senses the vastness, and yetthe unity of it all. A mighty surge ofemotion that causes his very being totremble, projects him into the rhythm,the beat of life.

The harmony of such attunement isso exhilarating that man gives vent tohis inner feeling of God by endeavoringto mentally create some picture that willimage for him the ideal God of hisheart. It is a driving necessity to createa conception of God. It is one of themost primeval forces in man— this urgeto express the God that is felt within.

That man is but one of the many ex-pressions of an Infinite intelligence hesenses more than he really knows. Th eGod that man interprets outwardly isunreal. It is the one he discards as anold garment, as he aspires to new ideals,that seems to bring him a closer visionthat is more in accord with what hefeels. Unfortunately, there are those

who pick up the garment he has dis-carded, and they wear it instead ofcreating one for themselves. It is a mis-fit, and manifests itself in their discordand restlessness.

The real God, the one man needs isthe Divine impulse he feels. He definesit as conscience, as aspiration. Th isGod from within is a necessity to hisnormalcy. Perhaps the era when man’sreligion will be individual introspectionand meditation, permitting his con-

science to soar unlimited to infinity,where he may enter into true com-munion, is not far distant.

More than ever there is a need for aGod— the God of one's own inner per-

ception— God as you can understandHim— the God that you know to be

true, infinite, companionable. The God

that you can inwardly comprehend is

the God that you need and the only one

you can ever know.

W h at is the Soul?— It is a Divineattribute to men’s earthly existence anddevelopment, a part of the Divin ity. Itexpresses two forms of Consciousness— Intellectual and Cosmic. It can onlybe known and understood through itsfunctioning and its manifestations whichare definite, distinct and unmistakable.

The mind, intellect and personalityare attributes of the Soul. Its source isGod and its existence continues aftertransition from the body.

M an’s illumination depends upon how

much he can attune himself with theDivine energy.

Sir Oliver Lodge and the late SirArthur Conan Doyle state that in themanifestation of a definite and recog-nized personality there is proof of theexistence of the Soul.

As the moon retaineth her Nature

though darkness spreads itself beforeher face as a curtain, so the Soul remaineth perfect even in the bosom of afool.

Search the Soul by its faculty, knowit by its virtue. It circumscribeth allthings. Before its revelation, time andspace shrink away.

Some thoughts always find us youngand keep us so. Such a though t is thelove of the universal and eternal beautyand instantly we come into a feeling oflongevity.

Man is the pride of God’s creation,the link uniting Divinity with matter.Of all creatures he is the only erectspecies and is fearfully and wonderfullymade.

The motion of the Soul is perpetual,Her attempts universal. Th e end of Hersearch is Truth, Her means to discernit are Reason and Experience. Her pur-pose is to attune the body, build upcharacter and personality and give thebody a D I V I N E E L E M E N T .

Transition frees the Soul from one

plane to another. Its existence does notend but it remains on the Cosmic plane
