The Rural ECOH Project Engaging Communities in Oral Healh Toothbrushing procedure Before toothbrushing The supervisors and children need to wash their hands. Toothpaste Fluoride toothpaste appropriate to the age of the child is used. • The supervisors dispense toothpaste. Pea sized toothpaste is distributed onto a plastic plate with adequate space between each bit of toothpaste. Brushing technique All children should be supervised when brushing to make sure toothpaste is not swallowed. With teeth closed, the upper and lower facial surfaces of teeth are brushed with large light circular strokes. Strokes should go from upper gum line to lower gum line and should start in the back right molars to the back left molars. For the inside surfaces of the teeth, upper and lower teeth are apart and small light circular strokes are used. Strokes start on upper right molars to upper left molars, then lower right molars to lower left molars. For the inside of the front upper and lower teeth a flick stroke should be used. The toothbrush is placed on the gum line and the brush is brought forwards. For biting surfaces of the teeth a light backwards and forwards motion should be used. The edges of the front teeth should also be brushed. Toothbrushing should take 2 minutes. Children should spit out excess toothpaste but not rinse the mouth afterwards
