THE SAAGA OF NALAPAT- THE SUBALTERN HISTORY OF INDIA THROUGH ITS PEOPLE’S CHRONOLOGY Dr Suvarna Nalapat Study of history is not a journey to the dead past. But a way to understand and live in the present. Archeologists dig the earth to get evidences.Historians into the everyday elements of society to find the roots. Each person, each house, each artifact, each village has its own history which fits in well into the history of its nation and to the world .The history of a house is the history of people who constructed it and of people who lived in it.A keen eye only can see the past signs in everything. In a village extending about 10-20 miles, you traverse only that much in your search on the surface of earth (space) but more than a thousand years (time) within a one hour drive is unfolded . How did our ancestors live? What did they think? How they behave in a particular situation? How they solved problems of day to day existence? With these questions and answers to them, we are not measuring them but also our own quality and success in social adjustment. I had always been a very curious child. I used to ask my mother about her ancestors. And my father about his. The family trees I drew from these two sources at a very early age was the first chronology I found out,in my schooling years. It made sense, because it gave me a purpose to study the chronology of ancient kings and sages given in historical and puranic texts.I instinctively knew that the curiosity in me was shared by those people also. Curiosities can lead to discoveries is the second lesson which came a little later. There are different philosophies of history. The cyclical periodicity of history repeating itself, the providential school of ebb and flow as good and evil by karma determined by God, progressive school of continuous progress, and the postmodernist philosophy of creating history not discovering it, by the process of looking for it. Then there are social historians, cultural historians, intellectual historians , political historians, diplomatic historians economic historians , science historians , environmental historians , womens issue historians and so forth, depending upon the area people select .The study of Nalapat saga offers all these perspectives in nutshell is what I found out , in my sojourn. It starts from a family history and encompass all these in its progress. Primary sources of evidences

1.Information on chronology from three different individuals of the three branches of Nalapat

2.newspaper accounts

3Notebooks and diaries

Page 2: The Saaga of Nalapat

2

4.books authored by the members and about them by others

5 letters

6 minutes of meetings, speeches

7.works of people who had first hand evidence of events

8 official statements of established organizations

9.photographs, films, audio-videos

10.artefacts made by people . Secondary sources of evidence Writings of people who were not participants of the events in question. But investigated primary evidence of it. Their published and unpublished works From the primary and secondary sources , interpreting and organizing evidences to make the meaning clear with convincing logical arguments is what history is about. Dates and a coherent dating scheme are essential to history as exact measurements are to physics. Herodotus gave dates of history 200 years prior to him, correctly. Beyond that he could not .My mother (informant 1) Nalapat Ammini Amma could give me dates from 1790 of our chronology ( 9 generations upto the present) and this had helped me a lot. She told me a curious thing which as a child I could not comprehend then, but as a doctor who has knowledge of genetic transfer ,I can comprehend now..She told me she has pure blood of kshathriya since four generations of Mooshakavansa fathers blood flow through her, but I don’t have it since my mother had not married from a royal family..Later on I found that in adoption of the Chola from Pallava dynasty the same rule was applied several centuries back. But how could these ancestors know a genetic transfer , accepted by modern geneticists, centuries before? My curiosity was raised and I plunged headlong into study of Indian history and Indology. I will start from the chronology of Nalapat (given by my mother ) and of Kaalipurayath (given by my father ) first. Kalipurayath saga is important because many of the Nalapat people (Punnayurkulam) of the present century have married from Kalipurayath.

There are three Nalapat branches as it is in South Kerala , one of them being a Christian convert saga existing from 1790 itself. The fourth one from the North, I have not explored. The saga to which I belong ,is the Punnayurkulam saga to which Nalapat Narayanamenon,Baalamani Amma,Madhavikutty also belong . The Nalapat saga started from Choornikkara near Alwaye and migrated to its present positions in course of time.In 1790 when Tipu sultan reached the Choorni river, a brother (Amma calls him Vishnu) with his two sisters escaped abandoning their more than 2000 year old ancestral property which stretched over the entire area .The elder sister was Kunchi and the younger was Lakshmi. Kunji was married and entrusted to Kanmanath Unni , a chieftain by the brother, and was requested to take the younger one Lakshmi with him and to give her in marriage to a suitable king or chieftain in due course. After entrusting the sisters in safe hands so that they will not be molested by the soldiers , the brother embraced Christianity ,because he didn’t want to go back in disgrace to Kochin Raja again, or to Zamorin who had given a nasty order disgracing his sisters ( the nair women, Zamorin had addressed as Pumschali in that order . in general). His was a political vendetta ,not a religious conversion. Probably a little opportunistic decision too, since in 1790 the Palghat and Chettuvaa forts and therefore the trade of these had gone to the British east India company from Indo-Arab hands. But, it is evident that the brother was very particular that the women of his race should be safe in the hands of someone who will not make the race a mixed race by Prathikoola marriage. Kunchi was given a residence and property at Kurumbathoor , near Chandanakkavu , Edakkulam and this property and house still exists with an ancient temple of Devi , close to the historical Melpathur Mana (of poet of Naaraayaneeyam). The younger sister Lakshmi was very beautiful and during a Maamanka festival at Thirunaavaaya , a king of the Thalappally kovilakam, Eliyanghat branch fell in love with her and married her. She was given property and a house in Punnayurkulam , in Thirutheekaatt (sreeagnivanam) and Lakshmi is the ancestress of the Punnayurkulam branch. The male line Vinods children -unnikrishnan and Vidya Vijaya children- Nandagopal and Ammini Aruns son Ajay’s 2 children Madhavchandrans children vaishnavi and sidharth Mohandas (children 2 girls)

I tried to locate the convert family .Amma could not tell me the whereabouts , except that Ammaaman (Nalapat Narayanamenon) had done some investigations in Choornikkara and found out the details .So I was at a loss. Then , once when I was traveling from Trichur to Ernakulam to give a lecture/demonstration on astronomy , on the national highway, towards my left,on roadside, I noticed a small shop with a insignificant board “Nalapat oil traders”at Koratty, and a nearby signboard on the road showed an arrow to a place Naalukettu.I suddenly remembered the mention in the dictionary of Herman Gundart that the word Nalapat means a naalukettu , with a central courtyard and houses on all four sides and it is a common name for the houses of Nairs and other classes of Kerala.Vadakkeppattu means there is building only on northern side , and Thekkeppaatu (housename of Sri M.T.Vasudevannair incidentally) means building only on the southern side and Kizhakkeppaattu with buildings only on eastern side, and Padinjareppaattu with building only on the western side. Hence Naalaapaat is a Karnataka Chouki, or a Vaasthu with buildings on all four sides of a central courtyard. The signboard to Nalukettu and a shop with the name Nalapat struck a harmonious chord and I asked my driver Johney to stop the car in front of the shop. When I entered an elderly man was sitting there .I asked him about his nalapat name. He was very reluctant at first, but then said that when the 100th year of Nalapat Narayanamenon was celebrated , media had approached him with the same question and he had evaded the question. Then I told him that I am from Nalapat family , not from any media. He was visibly relieved. He said , it seems we are from the same family, from the records in the church and the physical characteristics of the members. (What we call phenotype ).He said all are white and to the obese side like me.He said his brother knows more about it . I had to leave for the function and I left it like that. Then, in a newspaper , I had seen the photograph of a couple who committed suicide at Velankanni and below was written the name of the woman as Nalapat Reetha. I was surprised to see the resemblance

Page 9: The Saaga of Nalapat

9

of her face with my cousin Madhavikutty and also of me and other members of the family. My cousin , Dr Shyam sunder also had noticed the news and the phenotypic resemblance. One day , Mr Nalapat Poulose , brother of Antony (the one in the shop) and son of Nalapat Ouseph called me and wanted to have a discussion with me. And he came to my house and gave me a chronology of the Nalapat as he knows from his side of the story. He told me that , males of the family are still vegetarians, and teetotalers, except the new generation who has started to eat meat and drink alcohol. He seemed very proud of his heritage from a aristocratic family.I had asked him to visit my mother and he did that promptly and had lunch with her .There were a few things which were common to the chronologies, though the two families had lost all connections for several years and the culture had changed visibly.

1.Punnayurkulam branch knows 9 generations while this convert branch gives 8 generations chronology.

2.Just as Punnayurkulam branch is called Nalapat Thirutheekaat branch ,this branch is called Nalapat Karayamparambil branch from the church records.

3.Karayamparambil is a place 15 km from Choornikkara and 5 kms from Koratty

and therefore the total distance is only 20 kms from Choornikkara to Koratty and the male member who converted to Christianity did so ,after a short stay in Karayamparambu .Probably ,it is his son who converted to Christianity .That is why only 8 generations are given. Differences were also there.

1.The chronology is patrilinear in the Christian one while it is matrilinear in the

ancient one.

2.In the Nalapat matrilinear tradition children of a Nalapat male take the mothers family name only.Hence they are not Nalapat people.

3.The fertility index of the Christian patrilinear group is so much while that of the

matrilinear one is very limited as an inbuilt population control.

4.My mother gave the names of all the male and female members in chronology ,though she said the male branch is not belonging to Nalapat. She didn’t discriminate between male and female. But surprisingly Mr poulose didn’t bother to give the names of at least one of his ancestress in the list while he took elaborate pains to give every male name.Probably an exception to the rule for him was one Dr Preethi (with an MBBS degree), ,the only female mentioned in the whole list.Probably it was because I am also a doctor and in the medical profession , he included her name .Otherwise the list is clearly antifemale.

Page 10: The Saaga of Nalapat

10

I will try to give the chronology as given by him ,here.(Though it is very complicated because of the enormous number of members and their names in which it is more like the Kalipurayath geneology than Nalapat ) KORATTY NALAPAT Karayaamparambath SAAGA (8 generations ) Mr Poulose had given a detailed list of all the 7 generations upto him and leaves out the 8th (after him) to a great extant. In fact he has given me material which I can assess as three charts

.M.A.M.M.H.S.Koratty The family at Kurumbathoor and Punnayurkulam were a joint family till the year 1883, when the only male member of Punnayurkulam saga Naalapat Narayanamenon became 16 yrs of age to look after the female members and their property. Till then the property was not divided.Krishnammama (son of NarayaniAmma ) was looking after the affairs of Punnayurkulam property, staying at Kurumbathur and visiting only during harvest seasons. Because of this , and because of the close relationship my grandmother, and my mother had with the members of the Kurumbathoor branch (which we still have) it was not difficult to get the information from that branch.Unniettan (Nalapat Chandrasekharamenon) gave me the information in writing on Feb 2004.The chronology he gave starts from NarayaniAmma ,contemporary of Lakshmikutty (grandmother of Nalapat Narayanamenon). The generation in between Kunji (first ancestress) and this lady is not known .Only 6 generations are given. And the fertility index and population control of the matrilinear system is evident here also. The similarities are more with the Punnayurkulam and the Kurumbathoor traditions of marriage and inheritance and population statistics. The 6th generation of Kurumbathoor is equivalent to the 9th generation of Punnayurkulam which will give us a rough idea of the chronology.Poulose , on the other hand, probably mistaking me to be the daughter of Nalapat Narayanamenon , has left out two generations. It is surprising that both in Kurumbathoor and Punnayurkulam branches to continue the matrilinear line there is only one girlchild each, and both are named after the Goddess Gayathri. A coincidence or an astronomical synchronicity, or may be the blessing of the Devi in disguise. Poulose has totally left out the female children from the list, (true to patrilinear system) while Unnietten has left out the children of the male members (true to matrilinear system), and my mother has given both, though she also follows a matrilinear system. The patrilinear branch of Kurumbatoor was given by Sarojini Edathy and her daughter Devi ,and Mrs Lalitha Mohanachandran on 11.7.2009. Dr Madhavamenon Sons Rajasekharan ,Chandramouli

This is the chronology of Nalapat (my mother’s house) and Kalipurayath (my father’s house) but it incidentally also covers Payyath,Palisseri ,and Pulikkot to some extant and the intermarriages between these houses is seen.Making it a partially endogamous and partially exogamous society.Kaalipurayath chronology shows a high fertility index.Like Nalapat Christian branch by comparison. What I found out was that the history of all of us is intimately linked to the oldest Mooshakavansa of Kerala and I had to get their lineage to determine its roots. Thus an interest in my own roots naturally ended up in the roots of Indian culture and heritage. An interest in the intellectual and cultural thoughts of my ancestors lead to an interest in that of India and the world in general and that made me what I am .
