City House calling…present and past form one great
heart! … These words from our beloved school song capture the core of the Association’s mission – to bring together different generations of Sacred Heart alumnae who share the same fundamental values, into one vibrant and unified community. Whether donating to the City House Foundation, participating as career mentors, issuing alumnae pins to graduates, addressing students, participating in our first Alumnae Service Day, providing donations in kind for our dinner and raffles, or donating time and skills to support our events, Sacred Heart alumnae have enthusiastically responded when the City House “called”. This is in keeping with the values instilled in us as students; we are appreciative of such generous support. The vision of “present and past”

Congratulations, alumnae, on
another year filled with activities meant to reconnect you with your former classmates, and support your alma mater! Just since the winter, there was the
lovely luncheon and pub night at your annual Toronto Reunion; the successful Bingo Night joint
fundraiser, with the Parents’ Guild, in support of the
Capital Campaign; alumnae presence at our first Mother-Daughter Paint Night; and of course, the big Reunion Dinner in June, right here at the School.
It is always exciting to welcome some of you who have not been back to Sacred Heart in decades! A highlight of the tours is our Boarding Residence, now on the fourth floor, and filled with international students. We are growing so fast in this area that we are pleased to announce the hiring
of a new Director of Residence Life. Students from abroad are a necessity for healthy enrolment in any English high school in Quebec. We are proud of our enormous success in this area. With 48 international students and a total of 229 girls enrolled for the 2018-2019 school year, Sacred Heart is the biggest all girls English high school in Montreal!
Finally, I wish you all a safe and relaxing summer! Thank you for staying connected to Sacred Heart.
A Message from the Head of School
together is evident in all that we do and was on full display at the Alumnae Dinner in June which brought together over 120 women some of whom graduated 60 years ago alongside those marking a five year milestone. As President, I have been privileged to meet and work with so many delightful and impressive Sacred Heart alumnae. It is truly a unique feature of our community that friendships continue to be forged long after we retire our kilts, tunics, or Wallabees. As I come to the end of my term as President, I wish to express my gratitude for the tremendous support I have received and express how fortunate I am to have made so many new friendships.

Despite the heat and loud chatter at the annual Alumnae Reunion Dinner held on Friday, June 1, the air-conditioned Reception Room, the delicious buffet and the reminiscing by former classmates coming together made it a wonderful and memorable evening. Alumnae from the classes of 1958, 1968, 1978, 1983, 1993, 1998, 2008 and 2013 reconnected and celebrated the past, present and future of the School.

The Montreal Alumnae Association has been in existence for 97 years, and every year the graduates are warmly welcomed as its newest members. At this year’s Pin Ceremony, the 39 graduates received their alumnae pin from their “special” alum, and it was impressed upon them the importance of
staying connected to the School, their inclusion into a much larger network of SH alumnae and that they will carry with them their Sacred Heart experience for many years to come. Invited speakers included Maureen Glavin, RSCJ, a member
of the School’s Board of Directors, Sue Emblem ’84, mother
of grad Katherine Doré and Maureen Brown ’80, Alumnae
Coordinator.

On June 20, the Class of 2018 received their high school diplomas and 20
graduates merited special prizes and awards. The Graduation Address given by Christine Lengvari ’68, President & CEO, Lengvari Financial Inc., was entitled “Girls can swagger too.” Her address encouraged the graduates to be proactive, ambitious and engaged in all of their future
endeavours. Laura Pitruzello, the class valedictorian, recounted the
many good memories she treasures from her five years at Sacred Heart and the close friendships formed amongst the graduates.

Administratively, she has been president of the CMDP at CLSC Metro and now serves as Vice-President for the Medical Executive Committee of the CIUSSS du Centre-Ouest-de-l’Île-de-Montréal. She is married with three wonderful children and lives in Westmount. In her symposium speech at the Honour List gala, Audrey intends to thank Mother Johnson, RSCJ and Sacred Heart for the strong moral foundation, sense of community, and “Roots and Wings” educational philosophy that has guided her on her professional journey.
Marion Gale ʼ06.
Earlier this year, I took a leave from my job at the Ontario Ministry of Transportation to volunteer at the PyeongChang
2018 Olympic Games in South Korea as a transport officer for the Canadian Olympic Committee’s business team. My main tasks were to manage and book trips for business officials and to ensure all Canadian athletes and staff caught their shuttles at Canada House.
Overall I had a fantastic time, both getting to experience the Olympics up close, but also getting to experience South Korea. We were located in the coastal city of
Gangneung which it
turns out is historically very important - so on my down time I was able to explore old palaces, market
areas and a wonderful
beach! My favourite part of the experience
was probably getting to know Korean culture and history more intimately, and of course sampling new food and drinks. I would highly recommend volunteer opportunities (at the Olympics or with other organizations) as a great way to travel, not only because it provides structure and purpose to a trip,
but also because you get to meet and work with local people.

a Child Alive, whose mission is to realize the end of AIDS for children and families.
Vanessa is both a provincially qualified athlete and a Soprano 1 solo artist.

Deidra Chois ʼ12“There’s no greater feeling than watching the lifelong dream I had of performing on stage unfold in front of millions of TV and internet viewers. I still remember practicing singing for
my high school recitals at Sacred Heart and dreaming that one day I wanted to have that big break.”
This year’s edition of La Voix
talent show was the first big deal in the singing career of Deidra
Robertson Chois ’12 after
years of voice lessons and music classes. “I learned a great deal from this amazing experience. I worked with professional musicians
and tv producers. I met and made
incredible connections with so
many great artists. This opportunity has opened doors and furthered my development as a professional singer and understanding of the entertainment
business. I am very thankful for the Sacred Heart Family and their support. I am working hard to create more
opportunities for myself. I am currently working on my first EP with professional musicians!” “Everything you want is on the other side of fear. Dreams really do come true if you work hard at them. Never let anyone tell you differently!”You can learn more about Deidra at www.deidraandben.com and at letempsdunepause.megabb.com

The mission of the Advancement office is to foster and cultivate relationships within and outside of the
Sacred Heart School of Montreal community in order to increase rapport and financial support, enabling the school to achieve its mission.
New Director
Sacred Heart is proud
to introduce the new
Director of Advancement and Communications,
Lili Le Fèvre (parent of Charlotte Le Fèvre ’13), whom some alumnae
may have met in her previous role as Major
Gifts Coordinator. Lili is a bridge-builder who
hopes to strengthen
Sacred Heart’s culture of giving by collaborating with alumnae, parents, faculty and staff, and charitable foundations. She can be reached by email at [email protected] or by phone at 514-937-2845 extension 113.
17th Annual Golf Tournament
The annual golf tournament is the City House Foundation’s single largest fundraising event of the year, and this year was a record-breaker! Close to $70,000 was raised for the building of the auditorium
and wellness centre, making it the school’s most
successful golf tournament yet!
Despite some rain, over 100 golfers, diners, and volunteers came out to the Windmill Heights Golf Club on île Perrôt for brunch, 18-holes of golf, snacks at
the Oasis tent, contests, an exciting raffle and silent auction, and dinner with friends. Many alumnae participated, either as golfers (Mary-Ann Advincula ’91, Maureen Brown ’80, Tara Durley ’85, Susan Emblem ’84 Jennifer Newton ‘06, and Rosemary Vaupshas ’78), diners (Maria Cusma-Dovico ’06, Alessia Di Giorgio ’09, Rebecca Di Giorgio ’17, Andrea Duchesne ’96, Alexandra Lantosh ‘06, and Charlotte Le Fèvre ’13) or gift-in-kind donors (the Alumnae Association, Andrea Chamandy ’92,
Sandra Da Silva ’93, Rebecca Di Giorgio ’17, Anne Marie Marilley ’82 Johns, Sofia Muzzo ’90, Robin Pope ’78, and Stephanie Pshyk ’90 Aiken).
Capital Campaign
Speaking of the Capital Campaign, we look forward to
breaking ground soon on the new auditorium, which will
ultimately be built outside of the school’s current walls. The second stage of The future at heart campaign will be
the construction of a wellness centre for students, and the
third stage will be major capital improvements. If there is
a particular project you wish to support financially, please reach out to the Advancement Office!
The Campaign devotes a portion of funds raised to Bursaries,
which are essential to enrolment and ensure that girls who
may not otherwise experience a Sacred Heart education, are able to do so. Thank you for your ongoing support.

Celebrating Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne
Rose Philippine
Duchesne remains
in the minds and
hearts of many a courageous, faith-
filled missionary who through her
simple, consistent
choices ensured
that Sacred Heart
education would
take root not simply on the frontier but
across the world.
Born in Grenoble,
France in 1769, Philippine served as
one of Madeleine
Sophie’s earliest
c o m p a n i o n s .
Realizing her dream to go to the “New World”, Philippine arrived in the
frontier of Missouri in 1818, where she opened the first free school west of the Mississippi. Years later, her dream came true when Philippine traveled to Sugar Creek, Kansas to serve the Potawatomi. There she was honored by the people who called her Quakahkanumad (The Woman Who Prays Always). Unable to remain in Sugar Creek, Philippine lived her final years at the Academy in St. Charles. She died on November 18, 1852.
On May 23rd at an assembly in the Reception Room, Maureen Glavin, RSCJ spoke to the students, faculty and staff, about the important celebratory year in the family of the Society of the Sacred Heart. Sr. Glavin
informed us that throughout the year 2018 “the whole SH community will be celebrating the 200th anniversary of what has become the Network of Sacred Heart schools
in the US and Canada, as well as the 200th anniversary of the internationality of the Society of the Sacred Heart.”
Sr. Glavin, who currently serves on the Provincial Bicentennial Planning Committee, has visited and spoken at many of the Network Schools on the subject of the Bicentennial and
continues to share Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne’s story with the Sacred Heart family at large.
On the websites of both the Society of the Sacred Heart (www.rscj.org) and the Network of SH Schools (www.sacredtheartusc.education) activities and events marking the year’s celebration are listed, including two of particular importance and interest:
the Year of Prayer which celebrates the missionary journey of Philippine and the Global Service Day on Saturday,
September 15, 2018. On this day, beginning at dawn in Australia and continuing through sunset in western United
States, all members of Sacred Heart communities will unite
through a day of service. Please join The Sacred Heart School of Montreal and its Alumnae Association in this wonderful
initiative.
