Nine LHS Students Nominated ForGovernor's Honors Program

Cross Country at theState ChampionshipThe Cross Country Team ran inCarrollton, Georgia, th is past week atthe State XC Championships. The boyswere first to run, and were led byJaden Long, junior, when he placed67th out of 227 total runners. After, thegirls ran against 227 other runners andin the lead of the team was MeganCharbeneau, senior and team captianin 1 0th place. Overall, the girls teamwon 9th place and the boys team won23rd place.

Lowndes High School hasnominated nine students to the statelevel interviews for the GeorgiaGovernor’s Honors Program. TheGovernor’s Honors Program is aresidential summer program for giftedand talented high school juniors andseniors. A function of the GeorgiaDepartment of Education, it takesplace on the campus ofValdosta StateUniversity.

The 2013 program will be the50th summer, making it the longestcontinually running program of itskind in the nation. More than 2900students from across the state will beinterviewed and auditioned over threeweekends in January and February,and from those nominees up to 690finalists will be chosen to participatein the 2013 program. Since theprogram is fully funded by theGeorgia General Assembly, there is nocharge for students to attend.

During the four weeks of theprogram, students spend the morningin their major area of nomination,exploring topics not usually found inthe regular high school classroom.During the afternoons, students chooseone of the other areas in which tostudy. The curriculum in all the areasis challenging and engaging.Evenings are filled with seminars,activities, concerts, and performances.Mr. Dale Lyles, director, said, “GHP issuch a competitive program that evenbeing nominated is anaccomplishment. I congratulate thestudents of Lowndes High School andlook forward to meeting them andtheir parents at the interviews.”
