FROM THE PASTOR ’S DESK

Christ is Risen! Truly He is Risen!

Dear Parishioners:

What a wonderful greeting! “Christ is Risen!” and I have been very pleased to hear so many of you still use this proclamation when greeting or bidding farewell to one another.

We have passed another Holy Week and Pascha. It was a wonderful experience for me in seeing the community pull together in working for the common good to make our Holy Week services meaningful for all. Thank you and God bless everyone who donated their money for flowers to adorn our church, and to those who donated the Rousos Nama Wine for Holy Communion, and to all who made Prosphora Breads for our Holy Communion, and the chanters and singers who lifted their voices to the glory of God, the Altar Servers, and to our Myrrhofores, and kouvouklion decorators and bearers. Everyone contributed and it was a most glorious and joyous Holy Week and Pascha.

Now we ready ourselves for Sunday School and Greek School closing ceremonies, while the Hellenic Dancers are preparing for their performances for our Hellenic Festival. The organizational committee for the festival has been working diligently in preparing for this year’s Hellenic Festival, scheduled for July 29, 30, 31. The last two meetings have drawn more volunteers. It is an exciting thing to see everyone pulling together in working for our church. It just ‘revs’ me up!!! The two general meetings for festival volunteers are immediately after services on June 26, and July 17. All volunteers working the booths should make an effort to be at these meetings. There is a Sign-up Book in the Community Center, where you may sign-up to help the committee. Cooking for the festival will start on July 25. Everyone is invited to volunteer their services. Offering ones time to our church is one form of stewardship contribution. But not only that, its just a lot of fun!!!!

Most of you are aware that we have some very dedicated members of our community who are working at producing a Centennial Album that will glorify the first 100 years of St. Spyridon, Newport RI! Please don’t forget to submit your family picture. The deadline is June 1. Additionally the Album will have two additional sections: 1.) Family section, 2.) Memorial section. Submissions for these sections is June 30. See one of our competent volunteers during the coffee hour for assistance in setting up these pages for your family’s memorial. And please don’t forget to submit your family picture for the album if you have not already done so. We really would like to include everyone and every family. We are all a community.

Lastly, I wanted to mention something concerning stewardship. By now, you should have received a Stewardship Commitment Form in the mail with a letter from the

It is so very important for the Parish Council to have an idea as to the financial commitment each of you will make so they can prepare a budget. This is most vital. Our church is in need of so many things. Please, please, consider increasing your stewardship commitment. God bless you all.

The Philoptochos Ladies will hold their final meeting, which will be a Dinner Meeting on June 22, 2016 at 5:30 at Rheas. We encourage all women of our community to attend. Loula will be our contact person at 847-7746. Please look for an email within the next few weeks.

Graduation Michael Antonopoulos graduated as valedictorian from St Katherine College in San Diego. We congratulate him on his graduation and this high honor! Death Diana Garifalon fell asleep in the Lord on May 2, 2016.. May her memory be eternal.

HOLY WEEK AND PASCHA

Χριστός Ανέστη! We were blessed to have Fr John lead us through the beautiful journey of Holy Week and a most blessed celebration of Pascha! On the next two pages are photos from this most sacred time including the children planting flowers and making palm crosses on the Saturday of Lazarus, the Sunday School retreat and decorating of the kouvouklion on Holy Friday morning, the children involved in the service on Holy Friday afternoon, our beautiful myrrhbearers and procession outside on Holy Friday evening, and a glorious and beautiful Resurrection service.

CHILDREN ’S CORNER The Parlytic and Friends

The Holy Gospel according Mark, Chapter 2 Verses 1-12, the Paralytic and Friends, is a story about a paralyzed man whose four friends believed that Jesus could heal him. Jesus was in a house in Capernaum where many people had gathered to see Him because they heard that He had recently healed a leper.

Such a large crowd gathered that when the paralyzed man’s friends brought him to the house, they were not able to get him past the people who blocked the door.

Desperate to see Jesus, the men decided to find another way. They carried him up the stairs, cut a hole in the roof and lowered him on his stretcher into the room.

When Jesus saw the man, instead of healing him, He forgave his sins. The teachers of the law did not like this and began thinking to themselves that only God had the authority to forgive sins. Jesus knew their thoughts and asked them, “Which is easier, to say to a paralyzed man, ‘your sins are forgiven’, or to say ‘get up, take your stretcher, and walk.’?” He then told the paralyzed man to take his stretcher and go home. To everyone’s amazement, the man got up, took his stretcher and walked out.

The first thing this story teaches us is about faith. The friends’ faith is demonstrated by their creativity in finding a new way to get into the house, their persistence to open the roof and their determination to see Jesus. They would let nothing stop them, and in the end their faith was rewarded…The man was healed.

The second thing this story teaches us is that Jesus knows what is best for us. He forgave his sins first because He knew it was more important to save his soul than to cure his body.

Lastly, it teaches us to believe in things we can not see. The people were skeptical when Jesus forgave the man’s sins, because forgiveness cannot be seen, but they became believers when the man was able to walk.

One of the things that I take away from this gospel and try to apply in my life, is that, teamwork, persistence, determination, and creativity in school, sports and faith are rewarded.

This gospel also reminds me how important it is to pray for all of the people in my life and how lucky I am to have so many people in my life who include me in their prayers.

Finally, this gospel reinforces that I must believe in what I can not always see.

This is what it means to have faith.

Photos needed As we have begun to sort all of the wonderful photos we have received into a chronological timeline for this album, we have found a few areas where we are lacking in photos. If you have photos from any of the following, please email us at [email protected]:

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS

Hello everyone,

As the academic year ends for Sunday School, there are many points to remember. Sunday School was able to: provide a basket for a family at Thanksgiving, provide gifts for a family at Christmas, put on a Christmas pageant for the community, present a junior/senior oratorical festival, provide a Holy Friday retreat for the children, present an elementary oratorical festival, and collect coin boxes for the Orthodox Christian Missionary Center.

Many thanks go out to the families who bring their children on Sunday to learn about the Orthodox faith. Thank you to the teachers who come on Sundays to teach the children. The whole Sunday School staff pray that Niko Spentzos has a wonderful summer as he enters the University of RI in the fall.

METROPOLIS LAITY AWARD

Come to Lombardo’s to Honor our Parish’s 2016 Metropolis Award Winner— Aliki Cooper This year’s Metropolis Award is going to our own Aliki Cooper. In the relatively short time she has been here (a mere 14 years), she has become invaluable to our Parish. She has been the Monthly Bulletin editor since 2003 and has been our faithful parish photographer, ensuring that so many of the life events of our parish are photographed for future remembrance. Lately, she has busied herself with the 100th Anniversary Commemorative Album, as well as the website. The Awards Dinner will be held at Lombardo’s in Randolph, MA (just off the highway) on Sunday evening, June 12th. Come join as we honor our dear Aliki. Contact the church office to make your reservations. Tickets are $75 per person.


THE 16TH ANNUAL FILM FESTIVAL

If you have any interesting video of a religious topic, burn it to a DVD, and then enter it into the St. Spyridon Orthodox Christian Film Festival. There are many chances to win prizes, even the younger ones in our parish! Saturday, July 9, is the date. All event activities are free! Coffee and donuts will be available at arrival time, 9:30 to 10:00. Films will be viewed from 10:00 until 12:00. Lunch will follow. Once lunch is over, we will enjoy a 90 minute Rum Runner excursion in the harbor. [beginning at 1:45 PM sharp]. Hope to see you there!
