(NAPSA)—Need a secret weaponagainst food boredom? Looking fora simple, foolproof ingredient to addan element of surprise to your nextmeal? Look to mangos to make overdishes with naturally sweet, tropi-cal flavor.Mango’s versatile taste enhances

any meal, like on-the-go breakfasts,brown-bag lunches, after-schoolsnacks and family dinners. Theypair well with other flavors, trans-forming meals and snacks withfresh flavor that brightens yourplate and your taste buds.If you are trying to maintain a

fresh and fit lifestyle, mangosdeliver a host of nutrients to makehealthy eating more delicious. They are high in fiber, cholesterol-free, fat-free, and a good source ofdietary fiber. A one-cup serving ofmangos is just 100 calories andprovides 100 percent of your dailyvitamin C. That’s not all: Mangoslive up to their superfruit statuswith more than 20 vitamins andminerals.A few simple tips when select-

ing a mango will make thishealthy fruit a weekly staple onyour grocery list. To find a ripemango, just squeeze gently. Colorisn’t always the best indicator ofripeness. A ripe mango will beslightly soft like a peach or avo-cado. Keep unripe mangos at roomtemperature and store ripe man-gos in the refrigerator. To speedup the ripening process, placeunripe mangos in a paper bag.Whole ripe mangos may be storedfor up to five days in the refrigera-tor, or can be sliced, cubed andplaced in an airtight container inthe freezer for up to six months.Once you have a ripe mango,

wash the fruit and use a clean knifeand cutting board for slicing. Sim-ply slice off the sides of the fruit

about a quarter of an inch off cen-ter, avoiding the large seed in thecenter. Once you have these twosides, or mango cheeks, you can getto the flesh by slicing through theflesh but not through the skin andscooping it out with a spoon.Once cut, mangos don’t lose

their color, and the texture holdsup extremely well, making them agreat prep-ahead fruit. Keep sliceson hand to upgrade everyday sta-ples like mango on cereal or oat-meal, quesadillas with mango, mango and ice cream, or yogurttopped with mango.Since mangos are available

year-round, they are a perfect addi-tion to everyday favorites, familystaples and tried-and-true recipes. The fresh taste of mango is a fundeparture from tropical fruits suchas banana or pineapple. Kick upthe flavor in everyday meals liketoast topped with almost butterand mango or gooey-sweet MangoUpside-Down Cake. Adding mangois also a great way to upgrade in-season produce year-round, frommango-strawberry shortcake andmango and peach crisp to mango-cranberry sauce and mango andyams with toasted marshmallows.Mango’s flavor is bright and

sweet with a little tang, so try it

in dishes where you might use atomato, like mango salsa, Capresesalad with mango, fresh moz-zarella and basil or a mixed greensalad. Also, don’t be afraid to trymango on the grill, baked insweets or sprinkled with sugarand put under the broiler. For a simple lunchtime make-

over, add fresh mango slices to aclassic sandwich like Grilled Hamand Cheese with Mango. Tropicalmango makes a sweet addition tothis traditional dish with an unex-pected pop of flavor and color. What do you call it when man-

gos create a tropical transforma-tion? AMangover, of course.

(NAPSA)—Diabetes is a seri-ous disease that can affect manyaspects of the body—the heartand kidneys, blood circulation andeven the eyes.1 In fact, diabeticeye disease has increased inprevalence by 89 percent between2000 and 2010 and is a leadingcause of blindness among Ameri-can adults.2, 3 Despite this, visioncare is often overlooked by peoplewith diabetes as they work tomanage the many other healthproblems the disease can cause.According to a survey by the

American Optometric Associa-tion, 55 percent of people areunaware that diabetic eye dis-ease often has no visual signs orsymptoms.4 Additionally, 44 per-cent of Americans don’t knowthat a person with diabetesshould have a comprehensive eyeexam once a year, including aretina (dilated) eye exam.4 Yetthese exams are the only way todiagnose serious eye diseasesassociated with diabetes at itsearly stage.5 Regular retina eye

exams are critical for early detec-tion and treatment of these pro-gressive eye diseases that oftenbegin without warning. The longer a person has dia-

betes, the higher their risk for eyedisease. Over time, diabetes maycause damage to the blood vesselsin the back of the eye, known as

diabetic retinopathy, which canlead to diabetic macular edema(DME). DME occurs when thedamaged blood vessels leak fluidand cause swelling. Althoughsymptoms are not always present, this swelling can cause blurredvision, double vision and patchesin vision, which may appear assmall black dots or lines “floating”across the front of the eye.Approximately 26 million

Americans have diabetes and maybe at risk for DME.6 More than560,000 Americans have DME.7Yet approximately 55 percent areunaware that they have the dis-ease.7 African Americans and His-panics over the age of 40 are alsoat a higher risk for DME.8
