The big event on the Samoyed Club’s calen-dar for 2004 has come and gone and plans are already well advanced for the Club’s 2005 Championship Show Queen’s Birthday week-end at the NZKC. I was very pleased with how the show went this year. All the hard work put in by the Committee in the preparation and then the helpers on the day made the show most success-ful and enjoyable. Thank you Committee, Noel Ev-ans, Lynette Smith, Lau-ren V de C James, Kay and Steve Hamer and Anita Fraser. Having people who come in and run the show on the day is very much appreciated by the Committee who can just show their dogs. Thanks also to all those folk who entered, spon-sored the show, added to the enjoyment on the day and were thoughtful enough to say thanks to the Committee. The Judge said he really en-joyed his day. Each year the Commit-tee tries to improve on the year before. This year the “Of-Year” awards were handed out by our Patron after the show and this worked well with nearly everyone staying to congratulate those who had done well with their Samoyeds in 2003. Your Committee is always keen to hear any ideas exhibitors may have on improvements so please let us know your suggestions. One suggestion already made is to hold the show either Saturday or Sunday eve-ning rather than Monday morning so feedback to

the Committee on this would be appreciated. The Club is very lucky to have Iris take photos for us at our shows. Samo-yeds are very difficult to photograph and I think Iris does a great job of providing each of us with a memento of our dogs on the day. Thanks Iris. You will receive a copy of the photos taken of your dogs at the show shortly. A donation to the Club for these photos would be very much ap-preciated. Extra copies can be ordered from me. The judge will also be sent a complimentary set of the photos taken. The Otaki walk went ahead but once again the weather was not that great and attendance rather poor. We have also been having trouble with holding the Hawke’s Bay ribbon parade. First there was the terrible weather and then the judge was sick. Hope-fully we will be able to have the ribbon parade at the next Hawkes Bay shows and the Hutt Walk to be held later in the year will coincide with some nice weather. We can but hope!!! The sled season is now in full swing. It would be nice to see some of the re-sults that

Samoyeds are achieving at the various races ac-knowledged so how about letting Anita A know if you have done something worth con-gratulating. As far as I know only Andy Jameson and Denise and Andy Reeve are se-riously racing. Some photos of the dogs rac-ing would also be great. There are a lot of pup-pies around at the mo-ment. I am sure every care will be taken finding suitable homes for these puppies and hopefully a few will make it into show homes and add to the dwindling number of show exhibitors. It is sad to learn that more and more Samoyed puppies are being sold in pet shops where the only criteria for the new home is that you pay the dol-lars and the pup is yours. Samoyeds are a special breed of dog and need special homes where they are cared for and loved right into old age.

Until next time,

I would like to start off by thanking everyone involved with our Champi-onship show, from the committee, members, sponsors right down to those people who offered to help handout prizes etc. I felt the show went off well, ran like clockwork and I have personally had favourable comments from exhibitors that en-tered. My sons Martial Arts club pro-vided a sausage sizzle which was very welcome. I am pleased to re-port the children made a small profit to put towards their trip to Australia, so thank you for supporting them. Just one request, those exhibitors that won or use Science Diet prod-ucts, you could please keep the bar-codes and/or forward them on to Anita Shugg. Science Diet require barcodes when sponsoring shows and it makes our job a little bit eas-ier if all members do their part.

Next big event on the Agenda is our Open Show to be held in conjunc-tion with Taupo Kennel Association in November. Just a reminder that de-sexed dogs are allowed to enter Breed Classes at Open Shows. We will also be having another Sammie Walk later in the year. The date is still to be confirmed but we would like to have one in maybe Au-gust or September when the weather gets a bit warmer. If anyone would like to organise a walk in their area, please feel free to contact a committee member. It is always a matter of “have Sam’s and will travel”. Until next time, keep warm

The Club continues to operate suc-cessfully and the membership has increased by 4 to a total of 51. The Championship show cost ap-proximately $1,500 to run. Thanks to good attendance and generous sponsorship the show nearly broke even. The shortfall was approxi-mately $50. This shortfall has been met by the club's fundraising efforts. Cadbury chocolate bars for sale at $2 each or $40 per box (20 bars) continue to prove popular. If you would like to help with selling a box or would like to buy a few bars or a box please con-tact Simonne MacMillan The Club has several Samoyed Badges for sale. The badges are

The Samoyed Club Championship Show is the largest and most prestigious event run by our club each year and much planning is undertaken for this day to happen. This spe-cial day quickly came around this year. The building was unlocked at some early hour for the com-mittee to get organ-ised, oh what fun! Dragging tables here, dragging tables there, unloading boxes, boxes and more boxes, then more and more bags of dog food. Unpacking all the boxes and eventually all the trophy tables organised. Then more and more exhibitors arrived and more and more crates and more and more dogs and more and more barks!! Then it was groom, groom, groom!! Then our help arrived from various people and our stewards and Simeon our show manager arrived with the most required per-son of all, our judge Mr Robert Willis. The show started at

9am and just for an extra we were blessed with good Welling-ton weather, i.e. it was lovely

and dry which is al-ways a bonus when toileting our beloved breed when they are in their beautiful pristine white jackets for show-ing. So, they managed to stay clean and dry, how wonderful. First all the male dog classes were judged, then a short break oc-curred. This is great time to partake in the necessary toileting of one’s dogs and some-times, of course, the handlers, unless one wants to run around the ring cross legged! Then all the bitch classes were judged. Eventually, culminat-ing in the best in show awards, results of which can be found elsewhere in this magazine! Then it was another short break and then into the stakes classes, where dogs and owners al-ways seem to be much more relaxed. Much fun was had by all, dogs and owners alike, especially the junior handlers which was the last class of all. Well done to you all and keep up the good work. During all this raffle tickets were being sold to help raise funds for our club. Coffee and tea was aplenty and also this year we had a sausage sizzle which kept the worms at bay! Many thanks to Anita Andrew’s son’s karate

club for making this happen. Once the worms were fed every-one gathered together to celebrate all the “of year awards” for 2003. A friendly affair indeed and most enjoyable. Then the big exodus occurs where every-one madly packs eve-rything up, always in a less organised fashion than it was brought in and exhibitors all say their goodbyes Congratulations to all our winners of this years show, commis-erations to the ones that missed out, tell your dogs their turn will come! Also, well done to all the of year award winners and also to the raffle win-ner. Many thanks to all who made this day a suc-cess, whether you en-tered your dog/dogs, drove your wife here on your day off so that she could help, swept the floors after, sold the raffle tickets, took the photos, just came and watched etc, we thank you all and hope you will all be back next year! Special thanks of course to all our officials and most of all to the judge Mr Robert Willis. We hope you enjoyed your day as much as we all did.

Parvovirus, Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptosporosis and Infectious Bronchitis (Kennel Cough) are the major infectious diseases of dogs that can cause death and suffering. Fortu-nately a simple vaccination programme can help pre-vent these diseases. Vac-cines are given at: * 6 weeks old (optional) * 8-9 weeks old * 12-14 weeks old After these initial vaccina-tions, we need to booster our dogs immunity at one year of age and then every three years for continuing protection. Because of the risk of disease it is impor-tant to keep puppies away from public areas such as parks, beaches and foot-paths until they are fully protected by their vaccina-tions (7 days after their

course). At the same time it is important that puppies do mix with other dogs at a young age. This provides them with important social skills, which are hard to learn after 16 weeks old. This contra-diction leads us to recommend that your puppy is encour-aged to mix with other dogs, that are vaccinated, in a 'safe zone' (e.g. your garden).

“Because of the risk of

disease it is important

to keep puppies away

from public”

VaccinationsVaccinationsVaccinations

Canine Parvovirus A highly contagious disease, causing sudden and severe vomiting and diarrhoea. This is most severe in young dogs and can be fatal. Canine Distemper Highly contagious. Symptoms include loss of appetite, runny eyes and nose, vomiting, coughing and/or nervous signs. Treatment is of-ten unsuccessful. Survivors may have permanent nervous damage e.g. seizures or damage to the enamel of their teeth. This can also affect ferrets. Canine Leptospirosis A severe liver and kidney disease. Fatal in over 50% of cases. Symptoms include high fever, jaundice, vomiting and sore muscles. Dogs that contract this disease are usually found in areas where rats are infected. Humans can catch Leptospirosis from infected dogs or other species. Dogs that come into areas where rats frequent e.g. around fresh waterways, rubbish dumps or visit farms are at greatest risk. There is mounting evidence that this vaccine may cause autoim-mune problems with an estimated risk of 1:10,000. Infectious Bronchitis (Kennel Cough) A complex, highly contagious disease which is seldom fatal. Although a dog may be vaccinated it may still be possible for it to suffer with mild symptoms. It can be treated with prolonged antibiotic therapy, but this is expensive and not always effective. The infection is passed from dog to dog through the air. However, the main problem comes where dogs are grouped together e.g. in boarding kennels, at training classes, and dog shows. A vaccine given as drops up the nose is the most effective; this lasts 6-12 months.

I n the March issue of Consumer magazine there was an article on vaccination of pets.

Ponsonby Veterinary Centre's position on the frequency of vaccination. We currently recommend that your pet has an an-nual health check once a year, with vaccinations every 3 years. Although this varies depending on which diseases we are trying to protect against. There are however situa-tions when you will need to consider vaccinating more frequently. These are:

• If your cat goes into catteries regularly

• Leptospirosis, Kennel Cough (dog) Leukaemia (cat) vaccines

need to be given yearly

• If your cat goes into catteries at peak times, esp. Christmas

• If your cat is over 10 years old, and goes into catteries

• If you use a dif-ferent cattery to ours

Catteries and kennels have individual re-quirements so check what these are when you book your pet in. In May a new cat vacci-nation is due to be re-leased that contains only the respiratory viruses. This is great news if your

cat comes into the above categories, as it will re-duce the amount of vac-cinations your cat re-ceives. This in turn will reduce the risk of an ad-verse reaction.

At your pets Annual Health Check we will discuss your pets individ-ual vacci-

nation requirements and tailor them accordingly. (From Ponsonby Veteri-nary Centre Auckland)

The next day the man returns, and asks how the evan-gelist got on. The re-ply was positive, and the evangelist calls the dog to give a demonstration. Pick-ing up a stick, he throws it and says, "Fetch." Instantly the dog takes off, grabs the stick and returns. The evangelist says, "Drop" and the dog drops the stick at his feet.
