My Bio:
In 2005 we joined WBCCI’s San Diego Airstream Unit. Trish, my wife, and I traveled a lot since that time. Other than traveling to local rallies with our Club, we made several extended trips back East. We remember many of our travel experiences with pleasure and joy.
I’m originally from the Rhode Island. I came to California in 1975. I am a retired Naval Supply Officer and a retired attorney. My area of practice was Family Law. I was a Rotarian, and president of my Pacific Beach Rotary Club for one year. My wife is a retired teacher. I have twin sons, Vince Jr. and Steve, and a daughter, Debra-Lee. I have 7 grandchildren. We currently have a “4-legged child” by the name of Finnigan McCool, an 18-month-old German shepherd. Besides spending time with my lovely wife, I enjoy gar-dening and planting tomatoes each year.
The Inauguration:
Thank you all for attending our annual Christmas festivities. The luncheon was held at the GALLEY AT THE MARINA in Chula Vista, CA. There were approximately 40 Members present. In a cheerfully decorated dining room, our members enjoyed a satisfying lunch. The tinsel and trim of tree and apparel donned by member contributed to the magic of the season.
Our lovely and talented Bev Kuhn, mistress of ceremonies, began the process of inaugurating the following Members as Officers of our club for the year 2015: Continued on next page.

Special Thanks:
We like to extend a special thanks to Dick Mathies for a successful 2014 year. Thanks to his leadership, his rallies were always memorable and fun. Membership grew thanks to his efforts. His humor and patience brought out the best in people. He’ll be a hard act to follow. Let me add kudos to Inge Stein for her professional job as newsletter publisher/editor. She has done an exceptional job. Each month she posted an informative newsletter that reflected the fun & camaraderie of our rallies. She kept us updated on everything from favorite recipes to rig maintenance and safety issues. We can’t forget Irene Blacklock who has served as Secretary this past year. Her well-organized minutes kept a complete record of the activities of the club. This is a position that requires an unyielding spirit that few members can master as well as she did. Irene, thank you for a job well done. At the very essence of our Club’s survival is the job of Membership Chairman. Dan & Marcy Smith have performed this job admirably. I would like to extend the Club’s hearty thank you for your tireless efforts and the superb job you have done in bringing new members into the unit. You always make everyone feel “at home” and welcome. Then there is Joe Thomas. Joe, our webmaster, has taken a job which most find intimidating. It is through Joe’s initiative and superior computer skills that we maintain and promote our Website. The task of maintaining and updating content on a website is behind-the-scenes. Finally, I would like to congratulate Rick Blacklock and Bill Wright, the outgoing Trustees who have performed with merit this past year. Both Members have contributed more than their fair share of club advancement over the years. Much of the clubs current success can be attributed to their participation, past and present.
Plans:
Now, as president, I am excited that we will have a year of enjoyable camping adventures with the 2015 schedule posted on the website. I appreciate all of the volunteers who agreed to Host and Co-host these Rallies. It is these volunteers who will keep us going strong throughout the year. Everyone contributes something unique to the camping experience. For anyone interested in Hosting or Co-Hosting, there is a Manual on our website that will tell you everything that you need to know “how to Host a Rally”.
Volunteers, the key to success:
In addition to hosting a Rally, we need people to help set-up the gathering/eating area and cleaning up afterward. This would assist the Host/Co-Host in meeting the requirements of their Rally schedule. If anyone has any ideas about what we can do to enhance our weekend experience, please share them with us. I will be happy to help you implement your suggestions to the best of my ability. We really need you.
December’s Rally:
“ Christmas is the season for kindling the fire of hospitality in the hall, the genial flame of charity in the heart.” ~Washington Irving
Traveling to December’s rally at Chula Vista RV Park was a bit challenging for most of us who had to tussle with the unavoidable downpour. When we arrived Friday night, we had the daunting task of setting up in the pouring rain. After that, the rain subsided so we were able to resume our socializing. Rick and Irene Blacklock stepped forward as host for our recuperating President, Dick Mathies. They provided a great menu on Friday night, which was catered by the Olive Garden. They organized all of the duties as excellent Host. Thank you for an outstanding job. During Friday night happy hour, Donna Westerman’s talents on the piano kindled the joy of the season by playing Christmas songs. After dinner, Donna and Phil Westerman led the group in singing Christmas carols. Thank you for the musical moments, Donna & Phil. See photos on page 4.
January Rally:
This January 2015, our rally will be in Palms Spring. It’s a time that I know most members will look forward to getting away from our coastal community to enjoy the mild climate in Palm Springs. The theme of this rally is “Opportunity” and there are many places explore in that area. We also have planned a baby photo contest. If infant photos are not available, any of your childhood pictures will be welcomed. They will be displayed in a protected enclosure and returned to you at the end of the rally.
Hope to see you all there! Happy 2015 to all.

Happy New Years
This was our first experience for Linda and me with an Air-
stream Rally and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Meeting new
friends and learning so much more about our trailer was
awesome. Our son Josh and our dog Gidget enjoyed
themselves too (see attached pictures below). Also, Sarajane
was the ultimate host ensuring a fun time for all.
All the best,
Mike & Linda Greene

While attending the Christmas Rally in Chula Vista this
December, my neighbors Mike and Megan Merkt
noticed that I was slamming the door instead of
shutting the door normally. I own a “2010 Interna-
tional”. Mike came over and suggested that 2 wash-
ers added to the top and bottom hinge would elimi-
nated this problem. He just happened to have a few
extra lying around and was kind enough to install
them for me right there and then. As noted on left
photo, and now the problem is solved. Such an easy
solution for such an irritating problem. Thanks Mike.
Airstream Issues of the Month
In 2010 I had just become the proud owner of my first Airstream
(A 23 foot 2010 International). As a single lady and recently retired I
joined the club and set off for the Rally in Hemet where I first met Abe
Hernandez. Abe is an experienced Airstream Mechanic and has
helped me tremendously throughout these past 4 years. I was
surprised at his reasonable rates; and he extends his services to door
to door delivery. He has checked/packed my tires, installed solar on
the roof, added an extended hitch, created a hideaway door to
extend bathroom and in the process of adding a converter so I can
plug in my coffee pot while on the road. I rely on him to keep me safe
before my long trips across country. I highly recommend him for any
repairs or maintenance you may need. Inge Stein

TREASURY REPORT
Written by Bill Wright and Trish Campanella
After the financial presentation by Unit Treasurer, Kelly Crawford, a few of our members noted that our treasury may have funds in excess of our needs. The question of how best should to use that money was discussed. Some suggest that we use it to attract new members. Others suggest that we use the funds to subsidize unit rallies, the December luncheon or to provide musical entertainment at rallies.
Bill Wright, our former treasurer, spoke briefly about our treasury's history.
Prior to the Region Rally of 2010, the Unit's treasury was financed by members dues. Our Unit dues of $15 covered the publishing and mailing of our newsletter, the cost of the WBCCI badges, the cost of our internet site and a few other administrative items. Overall it was a breakeven situation. Many rally sites could be reserved with little or no reservation fees in a advance.
Over time, things changed. Costs to produce the newsletter went way down with the use of electronic mail and by publishing the newsletter on our web site. With our administrative costs reduced, Bill received approval to lower our unit dues from $15 to $5 per year. This offset the $10 annual dues increase by WBCCI.
Being frugal, our incurred costs were not an issue but over time, cash flow became meaningful. Some of our favorite camp sites started requiring partial, then full payment at the time of reserva-tions. Keep in mind that our Vice President is responsible for making the next year's reservations and it is hard to ask them to personally front these costs. At the time of the rally, the site costs are paid by the rally attendees. Usually, we fill the reserved sites but on occasion, we are short of campers. Since the unit does not ask the rally host to cover these unpaid site fees, the unit needs its treasury funds to keep the host whole. One rally's shortfall can easily consume nearly the entire membership dues received for that year.
The Unit leadership committee approved his proposition. Immediately a handful of hardwork-ing, dedicated members volunteered put their ideas together and formed a committee to host a Region Rally. The main benefit of hosting a Region rally is that it provides the host Unit with an opportunity to raise money. It was learned that funds received in excess of rally costs were divided between the host Unit and the Region. One third goes to Region while two-thirds remain with the Unit treasury. None of the committee members had experience hosting a Region rally.
It was hoped to get 50-60 rigs at Hemet 2010. A budget was created based on 60 rigs attending. At the set rally fee, our fixed costs were covered and a slight excess would be realized and shared. We were surprised by the results. It might have been due to the creative enterprise of the organizers or most likely, the widespread, fun loving reputation of the Unit, 90 rigs attended! This yielded the windfall excess that pumped up our capital.
Second, the deposit requirements for county and regional parks have tightened. Some of the more popular places require 100% upfront fee, 6-months to a year in advance. It is important to maintain a balance that is available to reimburse the 2nd VP when he/she makes the advance reservations. Simple example: reserve 15 sites, two nights at $45 per night. This is $1,350 per rally and can easily be for 4 to 6 reservations within a year.
How to spend extra money? By-laws put specific restrictions in place. For example, the unit is not allowed to pay for certain things, like treating a new member to complimentary first rally or gas expenses for executive board members, but it can be used to subsidize things like the December luncheon. The topic remains open for discussion. Should the funds raised by the few that worked on the Region rally be used to subsidize current rally attendees or held for future cash requirements? If you have any ideas, please share them with us.

And a special thanks goes out to all our hosts and co hosts for making our Rally’s so successful in 2014, without your hard work this would not be possible. A New Year is upon us again. A time to reflect on years gone by and to look forward to new and exciting years to come. I give thanks to all my new and old friends, some I have known for 60 years.
