THE CAMBRIDGE WEIGHT PLAN

As a teenager, Yvette Wheeler, was fit and active but at 23 she piled on the pounds following the birth of her child. She said: “I quickly reached my largest size – size 24. I lost all my confidence and was at an all-time low, suffering from depression and yo-yo dieting, I got into a cycle I found impossible to break.” In 2007 she joined the Cambridge Weight Plan with fabulous results but after having her second child, she gained weight. She reverted back to the plan and is now a size 12. Yvette offers consultations on the Cambridge Weight Plan from her home in Marsden, Huddersfield, Monday to Friday. For more information visit her My Life Therapies profile at http://www.cambridgeweightplan.com/consultants/22017/1/yvette-w.

NEWS

Bolster Moor Playgroup is now taking registrations for children to join in September.

The playgroup, based at Bolster Moor Baptist Church, Bolster Moor Road, Golcar, Huddersfield, is a registered charity and voluntary managed group caring for children aged two to five. Both morning and afternoon sessions are available with the option of full days on Monday and Wednesday, with children expected to bring a packed lunch. A free stay and play session is offered to prospective parents, giving the opportunity to see first-hand the variety of activities children can enjoy. For more information, call 01484 846785 or 07770 870146. A Parents and Toddlers Group also runs on Tuesday from 9.30am to 11.30am – ideal preparation for children who subsequently join Bolster Moor Playgroup. Activities include soft play, arts and crafts, dressing up and singing sessions with lots of toys and books available. It costs £2.50 for the first child and 50p for each additional child. Children receive a healthy snack and accompanying adults pay £1 for refreshments such as tea and coffee. For more information, call 01484 644377.

PLAYGROUP PLACES AVAILABLE

With Government cuts, unemployment and an economy still

in recovery, food poverty has become a real problem for some families across Kirklees. The Welcome Centre at Lord Street, Huddersfield, has seen a steep rise in the number of families accessing its food bank facilities and support services. Emma Greenough, marketing and publicity worker at the centre, said: “Last year we gave out 8,624 packs – that was up by 5,000 a year and up nearly 100 per cent on the number of families coming through the door. “People have been impacted by

FAMILIES FACING FOOD POVERTYthe bedroom tax and various other issues.” The centre, which is staffed by a small number of personnel and a team of volunteers, rely on food donations from businesses, individuals and from organised fundraising. Over 130 agencies currently refer people in need to the centre and each case is scrutinised before food parcels are handed out. Emma explained that each case is assessed but the aim is to help families and individuals back to being self-sufficient so as a guideline, no more than three parcels can be given to one recipient within 13 weeks. Emma said: “Many people who we see are upset and embarrassed – they don’t want to be here because they never thought

they would ever be in a position not to be able to buy food.” The centre offers help to families that have moved into accommodation and require the basics such as cleaning products and toiletries. Food packs take account of dietary requirements. For more information visit www.thewelcomecentre.org.

Ruddi’s Retreat is asking local fundraisers to support its campaign to raise £120,000.

The money will be used to buy a lodge for families suffering from the effects of cancer, life limiting conditions or bereavement, to use as a retreat. The lodge will offer families helped by the charity a place to stay, with full disability access available all year round. To kick-start the campaign, the charity has opened a Ruddi’s Coffee Shop & Bistro at Manchester Road, Linthwaite, Huddersfield, all profits from which go towards its fundraising target. Food is served from 9am to 8pm Monday to Friday and from 10am to 8pm at weekends. For more information call 01484 766886.

OUT & ABOUT

Our friends at fairandfunky will be hosting their popular recycling SCRAPtastic workshops where kids can explore their creative side making everything from masks to mobiles out of recycled food packaging. There will be further craft workshops with High Jinx where children can learn balloon modelling while Joker Entertainment will show them how to make animal critters out of vegetables. Making Sense is a series of creative spaces developed by artists, Amy Hirst and Rachael Walker. In Exploding Books, children can transform colourful paper, card and fabric while Kitchen Creature Puppets involves transforming kitchen utensils, objects and recycled materials into animated creatures. Food for Thought, part of the Making Sense series, is an origami installation which invites festival visitors to share their favourite food and recipes. Karen said: “The festival programme boasts an impressive line-up of free demonstrations and sampling sessions, as well as workshops and entertainment for children. “Marquees stay open until later on Friday and Saturday evenings to give festival-goers the chance to enjoy the live music and soak up the atmosphere a little longer.” For more information and festival updates, visit www.foodanddrinkfestival.org.uk.

The fourteenth Huddersfield Food and Drink Festival promises

to be bigger and better than ever with treats to tantalise the taste buds, sights to savour and aromas to awaken the senses. Whether you have a sweet tooth or simply love street food, you’ll find something to enjoy at the biggest free festival of its kind in Yorkshire. Not only that, Huddersfield Partnership, organisers of the festival, which takes place from Thursday August 7 to Sunday August 10 at St George’s Square, will also be catering for children with a whole host of workshops and entertainment planned. Karen Hobson, Partnership Manager said: “Huddersfield Food and Drink Festival 2013 was the busiest ever in the history of the event. “Visitors to the festival topped 160,000 over the course of the four days. “Many stallholders reported record sales and commented that the Festival is one of the best in the UK.” Food highlights for children this year include educational workshops with The Ministry of Chocolate and Café Umbria, which aims to get everyone involved in making amazing, authentic, Italian cuisine including pizza, pasta, puddings and antipastis.

Make your own Summer Bunting

Ever since the Royal Wedding in 2011 and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012, bunting seems to have had a revival. You will find it adorning garden sheds, houses, pubs and shops. Large parts of Kirklees and Calderdale are currently covered in Tour de France bunting but if you’d like your own to help celebrate a birthday, major sporting event, or just for decorative purposes, here are some easy instructions to follow.

Quick and Easy Outdoor Bunting Make a flag template to the size you wish out of cardboard, and cut flags out of an old pvc table cover or shower curtain. Cut out sufficient flags for the length of bunting required. Fold over the top edge of each flag and either sew or staple onto a length of cotton tape.

Crafty Kids!You will need

• Coloured or patterned card• Scissors• Pencil• Ruler• Ribbon, string or wool• Hole Punch

Method1. Make a template to draw around first.2. Draw around your template onto the

reverse side of your coloured card.3. Cut out enough flags to make your

bunting.4. Punch a hole in each top corner of

your flag pieces.5. Thread through some parcel ribbon

to hang your bunting flags on, or alternatively use string or wool.

6. Hang up your bunting!

SCRAPtastic Recycling with fairandfunky

Mask making is one of the easiest crafts and you can

make any animal you like – pigs, dinosaurs, monsters, princesses, sheep, or like us, cows! You can find simple templates on google or just draw your own.

You will need:Cardboard packaging, fabric and paper, scraps, scissors, glue and a pencil.

Method:Draw your chosen design on old cardboard packaging. Collect together a range of materials to use to create the mask: old envelopes, fabric scraps, magazines, old wrapping paper – you can use anything! Remember to cut out eye holes on your mask before you start sticking! When finished you can either tie string to each side to wear your mask, or stick a cardboard strip at the bottom to hold. And there you are: a simple SCRAPtastic mask! We’d love to see your finished designs at www.fairandfunky.com

Welcome to the second instalment of our art and craft

page, launched earlier this year by Alison Lester of The Rose Garden and recycling duo, fairandfunky. In this issue, Alison shows us how to make pretty Summer bunting, while faiandfunky have come up with a fun mask making idea.

FORGET ME NOT CHILDREN’s HOSPICE

7

Ajay was born on January 11, 2002 - a beautiful, healthy little boy. We

already had a little boy, Che, aged two and Ajay now completed our family. One day when Ajay was about three months old, he started to choke for no reason. His choking continued every half an hour and he was rushed to Leeds General Infirmary. The choking continued for 12 hours, after which my poor little boy fell asleep with exhaustion and I realised that there must be something seriously wrong with my baby. From that point, Ajay went through a series of tests and they all came back negative. They could find no reason for why he was the way that he was. The consultants told me that they didn’t expect Ajay to live beyond 12 months old. I was devastated, scared and frightened. Ajay had his first birthday, I thought what happens now? I came to realise that I needed to take each day, a day at a time and give him the best life possible. Time passed by, I went back to work

KIM & AJAY’S STORY

part-time and Che started school. I had to realise that this was our ‘normal’, this was our life. Aged eight, Ajay stopped breathing and I had to resuscitate him. This was my wake- up call, I had to face facts again that this isn’t ‘normal’ - I had a very poorly little boy. I was initially referred to Martin House for respite care but as soon as Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice started I began to receive hospice at home care. The carers come one night a week after school to give Ajay his tea & some play time. Above everything else I value the complementary therapy sessions that I get from Forget Me Not, this is something for me, it’s a little treat all for me and I love it! Now the new parent rooms are open at the hospice, I have already been planning some overnight stays with Ajay throughout the summer holidays. As the charity grows, we are getting more of the support and care that we need as a family. The team are always really flexible and the care is designed around parent’s needs. The advice I would give to other parents in my situation would be that they need to stay positive, to open up, don’t be afraid and let people help them. By Kim Brooke

These diary pages are the heart of The Scallymag; the main reason the magazine exists and probably the most useful part for parents and carers. With historic gardens, a deer park and great family appeal, Wentworth Castle is fast becoming one of

Yorkshire’s top visitor attractions. The estate, which was once home to the Earls of Strafford, is the only Grade 1 listed garden and parkland in South Yorkshire. In 2002 it was rescued from ruin by the Wentworth Castle Heritage Trust, which embarked on an ambitious programme of restoration. As well as extensive grounds, romantic follies, a visitor centre, café and shop, Wentworth Castle boasts an adventure playground, miles of waymarked trails and a year-round events programme.

A Huddersfield couple who lost their baby daughter to a rare heart condition are fundraising for the hospital that cared for

her. Helen Gardner and her partner, Aaron Dawes, of Almondbury have organised a whole host of events across the district during July and August to commemorate Daisy Leigh’s short life. Born on July 18, 2013, she survived just 22 days and between her birthday and the anniversary of her death on August 9, the pair aim to hold a fundraising event every day in aid of Birmingham Children’s Hospital. Helen said: “Daisy was diagnosed with two severe heart defects at our anatomy scan at 23 weeks and required major open heart surgery at birth. “As the operations needed were so rare, the only experienced surgeons were in Birmingham or London so arrangements were made for Daisy to be born in Birmingham.” Following two major operations and a period on life support, doctors discovered a bleed on Daisy’s brain and her parents had to take the decision to withdraw medication and let her slip away. Helen said: “It would have been unfair and selfish of us to try and control the bleed just to have a few more days with our princess. Daisy’s fight was over and sadly she had lost. “There were a lot of tears that day. Daisy touched a lot of people in her short life. It was so hard saying goodbye to Daisy but also hard leaving the hospital and the life we had known for the last 22 days. That time will stay with us forever.”

OUT & ABOUT

We booked for three nights in August and I can honestly say it was one of the best family holidays we’ve ever had. No television, no radio, no computer games (and no hairdryer)…just quality time together as a family. We played outside for hours, enjoyed family meals cooked on the wood burning stove, collected eggs each morning from the farm’s chickens, visited the goats, groomed the Shetland ponies, explored the surrounding fields and woodland on long walks, watched the sunset, gazed at the stars and talked to each other – simple activities that we often don’t do enough of when at home. It really is a nature lover’s paradise with skylarks, kestrels, hawks, tawny and barn owls all resident along with an active badger sett nearby which can be viewed from a hide. There is now also a chance to learn bushcraft including skills such as making fire and building a shelter. Move over Ray Mears. There are lots of attractions nearby too but we enjoyed the peace and quiet so rarely wandered further than the nearest village. As we left the farm, Crowded House’s ‘Private Universe’ started playing on the car stereo and I couldn’t help thinking, that’s what childhood should be like.

“…The highest branch on the apple tree It was my favourite place to be…”

The Dandelion Hideaway, run by John and Sharon Earp, is a real idyll. My children have not stopped talking about ‘Farmer John’ since. We enjoyed it so much that we’re heading back this year.

By Elaine Jinks

I will be brutally honest with you. I don’t come from a camping family. The closest

thing I’d ever got to the Great Outdoors was a static caravan in Wales when I was aged six. That was until I was 22 and my boyfriend, now husband, convinced me to spend a week in the Lake District with him in a tent. Never again! I lasted all of one night. I lay there terrified that I was being crawled on by mini beasts and crossed legged because I refused to tramp through a pitch black field with nothing but a torch to light the way to the toilet block. I was damned if I was going in the bushes! As I unzipped my sleeping bag the next morning, I realised I was covered in dew and given that there was no handy electrical socket for my hairdryer, I would be spending the day bearing an uncanny resemblance to the farmer’s scarecrow in the neighbouring field. “We’re going to a B&B,” I announced. And that was that, I had not entertained the idea of camping since. Then last year, now married with three children, it dawned on me that my fears and preferences for home comforts may be depriving my own children of some all-important life experiences. I wanted my kids to climb trees, sit round camp fires, get mucky, connect with nature and enjoy their childhood but I still couldn’t face another night in a tent. So, after hours of trawling the internet, looking at yurts and tepees, I stumbled upon The Dandelion Hideaway – luxury canvas cottages located in the Spinney Field, a picturesque five acre plot in the heart of a working Leicestershire farm. It offered comfortable beds, a wood burning fire, vintage furnishings, a flushing loo and a roll top bath all under canvas. Step outside and you’re confronted with miles of countryside. Now, that’s the kind of camping I can relate to, I thought.

Does your child love dancing, acting and singing? Do they thrive in front of an audience? Were they born to be on the

stage? If so, give them the chance to perform to their full potential at Limelight Summer School. The school, which is run by husband and wife, James and Lisa McCann, will be at St Matthew’s Parish Centre, Rastrick, between August 4 and August 8, 2014, from 10am until 3pm and is open to children aged between six and 15. Limelight has been offering weekly classes for a number of years with James teaching drama and Lisa, a qualified and experienced dance instructor, leading street and tap dance. James said: “Limelight Summer School offers a fun and friendly approach to performing arts. We will be producing our very own Summer pantomime and we want as many children as possible to be a part of it. You don’t have to be a Limelight student but if you’ve an interest in performing arts,

Summer Reads

LITERACY

Sam’s Sandwichby David Pelham (£6.99)Summer is the time for sandwiches but hesitate before you eat Sam’s, for as you peel back each layer of this fabulous club sandwich, many unwelcome insect additions emerge, gruesome and enormous fun.

The Pigeon Needs a Bathby Mo Willems (£6.99)Perfect for reluctant bathers. Wily pigeon fields every conceivable excuse to avoid the water. When he reluctantly agrees, the agony is prolonged as he objects to the temperature and toys. Finally, with a splash, he is in and a convert!

Too Many Ticklesby Thomas Taylor and Penny Dann (£5.99)This book definitely should come with a health warning - the story will excite your children. A short picture book, showing a family repertoire of tickles which demands to be copied!

Picnicby John Burningham (£6.99)Simple and interactive. A boy and girl are joined by various animals intent on a picnic. A bull chases them, so they hide in the trees, can you find them? Then various possessions go astray and have to be spotted. It all ends well at bedtime but who is sleeping where?

Chicken Clickingby Tony Ross and Jeanne Willis (£11.99)This legendary couple have now given us the ultimate modern cautionary tale. When Click learns to use the farmer’s computer, she goes on a monumental online shopping spree, delight all round. Then, she decides she needs a friend and soon finds what appears to be her perfect match. Without telling her parents, she sets off to meet him. It is a young looking picture book but the message needs conveying as soon as children become digitally savvy.

Macavity the Mystery Catby T.S. Eliot and Arthur Robins (£6.99) This hilarious, anarchic romp reflects the misdemeanors of an earlier generation. Read, sing or perform this pacy rhyming story of the irrepressible Macavity, who breaks every law with impunity, as when the plodding police arrive - Macavity is never there.

Mrs. Armitage on Wheelsby Quentin Blake (£5.99)Cycles are likely to be much in the news this Summer. Join Mrs. Armitage as she encounters routine cycling problems which she solves with eccentric originality. A great companion for youngsters, while you watch the main event!
