Ask the members of Whiskey Rebellion where they got their start, and they’ll tell you the Golden Light Cantina onSixth Street in Amarillo. They opened for Chancy Bernson at the cantina, and in lead singer Ross Prokop’s opinion,Golden Light Cantina is “the best hometown bar. Where else canyou write on the walls!”

Consisting of Prokop and members Max Neal, Troy TeBeest, ErnieMartinez and Joe Nash, the band has been together two years, starting out in Troy’s garage. Joe and Ross grew up together, andused to play acoustic shows at Golden Light Cantina about threeand a half years ago. Joe lived next to Troy, and heard him playingdrums one day, and persuaded him to join the band.

With a combination of Southern Rock, Country, and Americana (TexasCountry), Whiskey Rebellion is bound to have a little something foreveryone. “We play whatever sounds fun,” says Ross. Born in Lub-

bock, Prokop lived inTexico, New Mexico, and has known JoeNash since the guyswere three years old.Prokop now coachesand teaches for the Farwell, New Mexico ISD, after graduating WTAMUwith a degree in Sports and Exercise Science. He was a member of theWest Texas A & M University Herdsmen, the caretakers of the mascot,as well as a member of Phi-Delta Theta Fraternity.

Max Neal, who plays rythym guitar for the band, is the newest member, having been with them approximately six months. He has a degree inmusic from Southern Plains College in Levelland, Texas, but grew up in

Chillicothe, Texas. Max originally asked if the band needed a banjo player, but ended up replacing the band’sformer guitar player. Max says he was “very enthusiastic” when he met the band, singing along with their upbeat, rowdy country-rockabilly style.

The band does cover songs, as well as their own original songs, and care more about the music than sales. Eachmember has contributed to the original songs, and they hope to start on a CD by late Fall of this year. They playestablishments and get the cover charge as their pay, but make sure that the establishment gets plenty of sales in

drinks and/or food.

Whiskey Rebellion also does quitea few weddings, charging a flat rateof $650.00. They bought a new soundsystem for wedding gigs, and justplayed at a wedding a few weeksago. “Very rarely do people get tobe in a town known for music andbe able to make it,” says Joe, refer-ring to the many bands from Ama-rillo that have gone on to make itbig. He says that the band is pre-pared to go either way. If they makeit big, they’ll make it big, and if not, they’re happy with that, too.

“We don’t call ourselves musicians,”says Prokop, “we call ourselves en-tertainers.” And entertain they do!They play songs that has the crowdon their feet, singing and dancingalong with the music. The band in-teracts with the crowd, giving shout-outs, handshakes, high-fives, andwaves to people in the audience.Their favourite song to play is theirversion of the song “Gin and Juice”,and their most requested is “GoodFriends”, an original of the band’s.They play 2-3 gigs a month, and usetheir own vehicles to haul their equip-ment or rent a U-haul if the need to.

(Troy says he likes playing a four-piece drum set, so that can movearound and not be hidden by Rossall the time. An enthusiastic drummer,Troy is planning on going back toAmarillo College to major in Draft-ing.

The Music Scene in Amarillo is full of a variety of styles and attitudes. Irecently met a local Rap- Hip hop artist named Yung. His first public perfor-mance was August 8th at the Heatwave Lowrider Car show and Concert. They had several local artist appearing that day, Yung stood out to me. Hewas the very 1st on stage to get the show started. He said “It felt prettycomfortable up there. I wasn’t as nervous as I thought that I would be”

When I sat down to talk with Yung about his mu-sical ambitions, he surprised me with his wordsand views on life. He has intentions to change hislisteners thoughts to kindness and justice. “I ap-preciate a life that stands for Values and Morals.I have some vietnam veterans that have been abig influence on where I stand” Yung has 3 sonsand he strives to be the best Male Role modelthat they have in their lives. His wife and kids arevery supportive of his dream and stand behindhim 100%. Although they are supportive, he likesto keep his family separate from his career am-bitions. He says “I become so wrapped up in themoment that I become a different person”

Yung has dreamed of a career in the music industry as long as he canremember and he has been professionally recording for about 6 or 7 yearsnow. This year has actually been his most dedicated year to his dream. “Ireally feel like things are taking off for me and I am ready to make thathappen.”

It’s funny, I have several local artist C.D’s in my collection but I find myselflistening to Yung’s when I am just driving around. I like his style and I likewhat he has to say in his songs.

He has sold around 250 C.D’s just be word of mouth and face to faceinteraction. He has been working on his 3rd C.D but the quality and soundare not quite at the level of standard that he would prefer. “I am kind of aperfectionist when it comes to my music”

I asked Yung if he had anything that he would like to say to his fans and toour readers. This is what he said “Listen Up Amarillo, Cuz I got somethingto say and Here I come.” If you are curious to know what Yung has to say,you can email him for a C.D. [email protected] If you have a local eventthat you would like to book him for his cell number 806 678-2234. He iscurrently getting a myspace ready and he is setting up his music on there aswell. You can find him under Yung Max. It was a pleasure to meet someonewith such a good out look on life and such a humble presence. I hope to seehim climb on his path to success.

“Yung” and Ambitious

The band’s name originated because of the mix of music they play. “Sinceit’s all different music, it’s kind of a rebellion,” says Prokop, adding thatwhiskey helps the crowd “relax”.

Their music and calendar of events can be found on their My Space page:www.myspace.com/whiskeyrebelliontxLog on, and see some of their work,as well as find out where they’ll be next. Then, go see them. Whiskey Rebellionwill leave you asking for more. “Live to dream,” Prokop says, “one day at atime.”

Go Back To SchoolIn Style!

Imagine a world without color.Like an overcast day, everything would be dull and boring.

By Amy Baucom

The walls of the office overlooking the lawn of West Texas A & M University’sCornette Library are filled with framed photographs of book cover jackets;the bookshelves lined with books written by the University’s Writer in Resi-dence, Jodi Thomas.

With 26 novels and 6 short storiesto her name, Thomas is alwaysworking on another story. Fromher first-published book, BeneathThe Texas Sky, to her currentbook, Twisted Creek, Thomasseems to have a never-endingsupply of characters, story linesand plots to work with.

Although English was never herstrong suit, Jodi has alwayswanted to write. Jodi says she may not be a wordsmith, but she is a story-teller, and words are the tools. Being a story teller is a spark of a giftwaiting to be developed.

With degrees from Texas Tech University and post grad work at TexasWomen’s College in Denton, it was when she was halfway through her PHDthat Jodi began writing a book on her notepad. Those notes soon turnedinto the novel Northern Star, her first book written, but the second of hers tobe published. Northern Star is a rare, hard to find book, as there was onlyone printing. Thomas says that it’s worth over $100.00 on Ebay as of thiswriting.

She has also written a short story called The Day Petey Played Last Base, based on a game she watched where a little boy played rather poorly at

A Visit With Jodi Thomas

baseball. That 400-word story hasbecome standard on the Iowa ReadingTest.

Because of her love for Texas History,Thomas began writing HistoricalRomances based in Texas. She says shefeels like she filled a niche people

wanted, as there are very few Historical Novels set in Texas.

Before becoming a successful published author, Jodi taught school for 19years; 2 at Bowie Middle School and then 15 at Amarillo High School.Beneath The Texas Sky came out while she was teaching Home and FamilyLiving at the high school. Thomas says she “likes people better than lessonplanning”, and gives talks to beginning writers all over the country. “I cannotguarantee you success,” she tells them, “but I can guarantee you failure ifyou don’t try.”

Beginning writers come looking for an editor or agent, when what they’rereally looking for is a teacher. Her tips for new writers include:1. Read. When you read, you learn that books have a beat, or rhythm.2. Read books on writing.3. Take a writing course.4. People who want to write should prepare for it as if it were their profession.Take some continuing education to prepare for writing.

A good idea for new writers, she says, is to enroll in WTAMU’s WritingAcademy in June 2010. It’s worth the cost, as new writers will learn thebasics of writing a good novel. Information can be found at the ContinuingEducation office at the University, or on the University website.

“A good writer writes, and rewrites, and rewrites, and writes again,” saysThomas, and this seems to have served her well.

At the National Readers’ Choice Awards, she was up for 2 categories: BestMainstream Fiction with Romantic Element, and Best Historical. She wonBoth awards with Twisted Creek and Tall Dark and Texan.

She has done short story series and is contracted to do two more with localauthors Phyliss Miranda, Linda Broday, and Dewanna Pace. These books, titled Give Me an Outlaw and Give Me a Ranger, will no doubt have thesame great story lines and settings as the last two collaborations, Give Mea Cowboy and Give Me A Texan.

Thomas will be speaking in San Antonio at the National Federation of PressWomen Conference this Fall, as well as the White County Creative Writers’2009 Conference in Searcy, Arkansas.

Thomas says that she always gives 100% toeverything, and has tried to be the best ateverything she’s done, and that work ethic hasserved her well. She has the drive needed to dothe best at everything, and fights for time to writeeach day. Sometimes, the business of writing getsin the way of writing, she says. When the bookis finished, the last chapter is sort of a goodbyeto the characters, and can leave an “empty nest”feeling with the author. Sometimes the charactersbecome so real for the readers, that they wantto know “the rest of the story”, what happenedafter the book was finished. Thomas’ books

would be considered rated PG-13 as she doesn’t write for children. “You’vegot to write like your mother’s dead,” Thomas says with a laugh.

Any regrets Thomas might have? She wishes she’d have started writing ear-lier, had more children, took more pictures and looked at the pictures morethan the mirror.

“When I die,” Thomas says, eyes sparkling, ”I’m going to wish that Heavenwas a revolving door, and I could come back and do it all over again.”

The Best Haunted House in Amarillo is going to be in a new location this year.Center City Massacre has moved from it’s downtown location to an old 100year oldm o v i etheater onRoute 66. Theyhave alsochanged theirname to 6th StreetMassacre, so don’t getthem confused withother haunts around town.If you are looking for thatadrenaline rush of getting soscared you literally pee yourpants, you won’t find it anywhereelse but 6th Street Massacre!

The guys behind the new 6th StreetMassacre are constantly coming up withnew ways to scare you. They build andconstruct most of their own props. I was showna prop they had built in one day. They get an

idea andrun with it. Ifyou visit theirhaunt the firstday of the seasonand again on thelast day, you willprobably have twototally differentexperiences.

Last year, their haunted housewas listed in 13th Hour Haunted

House Magazine’s top 25 haunted house in the Nation. #1 Haunted Housein Texas according to Scott Williams’ book “Haunted Texas: A Travel Guide”.

They have invested over $200,000 in their haunted house to make it what it istoday. This year they have taken things to a different level. Now they have apermanent home, so every year they will be in the same location.

The new building is unique and historical. It’s an old movie theater that wasbuilt back in the 1930’s. It’s a perfect spot to reenact horror films. The buildingstill has the original theater seats. It seems like it would be small viewing it from

6th Street,but it is

a c t u a l l yvery large

once you areinside.

They have thebiggest roaches that I

have ever seen in mylife. They showed me

around the place and tookme into their “office” (that is

where those hideous bugswere). When you turn on the

lights the roaches go crazy andthey smell terrible. There is one

monster roach that will hiss at you ifyou touch it’s back! Ugh, I get the creeps

and shiver all over just writing about it.

11 years in themaking is this

year’s 6th StreetMassacre. They

make it all about howmany people they can

make wet their pants, cryor pass out. If high energy,

“in your face action” is whatyou are looking for...6th Street

Massacre is the place to be.

They will be open for businessOctober 2nd. Open 7pm until the last

victim passes out. Even if you have beento one of their haunts in the past, you

haven’t seen what they have this year. Every year they change things upand make your experience unforgettable.
