V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University

The School provides training in Medical Practice licensing

its graduates as doctors.

The School of Medical Sciences was one of the first four

schools of the newly founded University. The development

of the School comprises two periods. The first period

continued up to 1920, the second started in March 1993,

when the School of Fundamental Medicine was again

opened at the University.

The School’s faculty includes 22 doctors of sciences, full

professors, 68 candidates of sciences, associate

professors and instructors.



Over 1080 students including 700 from other countries

study here. Recently, our multinational faculty was

replenished by 19 students from India.

Training is provided at the facilities of the University

Schools and Kharkiv research and medical institutions.

The School focuses its research on the modern problems

of theoretical and clinical medicine. Since 1995, the School

has published the School of Fundamental Medicine Journal

in English, in 2002 reorganized into the Kharkiv University

Bulletin: Medicine.

The School is organized into 8 Departments:

- Department of surgical diseases

- Department of internal medicine

- Department of general practice-family medicine

- Department of general and clinical immunology and

allergology

- Department of general and clinical pathology

- Department of paediatrics

- Department of obstetrics and gynaecology

- Department of hygiene and social medicine

Department of surgical diseases

Areas of research: surgical gastroenterology and

laparoscopic surgery.


Head of the Department: Yevhen D. Khvorostov, doctor of

Medicine, Full professor.


Each year, the department trained more than 400 students, many of

whom are foreign nationals. Graduating students have a high level

of vocational training and a comprehensive approach to solving

patient’s problems. Today, our former students successfully work

not only in Ukraine but also in countries near and far abroad.

Department of internal medicine

Areas of research: philosophical problems of clinical

medicine; best management of patients;

neurocardiology; biomechanics of the blood-

circulation system; clinical functional diagnosing, and

forensic medicine.


Head of the department:

Mykola Ivanovych Yabluchanskiy PhD (Medicine), Full

Professor.


The Department is one of the leading in Ukraine and

abroad as for the educational process. From the earliest

days of its establishment, the work of the Department

was based on the approaches of modern modular

system, which is sequential from first to last day of

training at the Faculty; teaching of Propaedeutics is

based on syndromic principle, which today is common to

all medical schools of medical profile; and from the very

beginning, internal diseases are taught instead of faculty

and hospital therapy, that nowadays also takes place in

all medical faculties of the country; in teaching process

in addition to conventional approaches, the latest

computer technologies are widely used; the students

participate in preparing of scientific and medical

documentation from textbooks to lectures and so on.


The Department is one of the leaders of national and

world therapy. The Department is one the first founders

of the international virtual Internet scientific conferences

in the world; the Department staff are the members of

editorial boards of 7 scientific publications and are the

organizers of 11 scientific conferences of different levels;

significant number of scientific, scientific and

methodological, methodological and educational works

are published, including textbooks and manuals.

Department of general practice - family medicine

Areas of research: methodology of clinic-population

investigations, groups of risk for detection of high-level

risk contingent, detection and modification of

pathological changes of persons with the high level of

risk of health and correction of risk factors.

academician of the Ukrainian Ecological Academy of

Sciences.

Department of general and clinical immunology and

allergology

Areas of research: general, clinical and inter-disciplinary

aspects of immunology and allergology; epidemiology of

chronic diseases; and development of efficient

technologies for controlling the quality of the patient’s

health and life.

Mykola Mykolaevych Popov, PhD (Medicine), Full Professor

The employees of department are the authors of modern

technologies of medical treatment of the combined violations in

the system of gemopoezis and immunogenezis, applications of

methods of cellular and tissue therapy. Popov M.M. is the author

of complex limfomielotransplantate. On a department there are the

developed original methods of medical treatment and diagnostics

of autoimmune, infectious-inflammatory and allergic diseases.

Department of general and clinical pathology

Areas of research: molecular pathology of inflammatory and

oncological diseases; and design and implementation of new

methodologies in teaching general pathology.



Elena S. Protsenko, PhD (medicine), associate professor


Best students of the faculty take an active part in scientific

activities and do scientific research, exploring the technique of

surgery, dissection of a dead and filling of the autopsy protocol.

These students attend undergraduate research study groups at

the Department of General and Clinical Pathology. The

Department is currently working on creation of new exhibits for

the museum of anatomy and pathology.

Department of paediatrics

Areas of research: health care for children and young people

whose parents were affected by ionizing radiation during the

Chernobyl accident.

According to the tradition of classical university education,

students take an active part in research starting from the second

course. Their obtained results are reported on the meetings of

student’s scientific society, scientific conferences and published

in journals and collections of scientific works.

Department of obstetrics and gynaecology

Areas of research: reproductive health problems and modern

methods of contraception.

Department of obstetrics and gynaecology

Research team aims to develop new methods of diagnosis and treatment

most often complications of pregnancy and some forms of gynecological

pathology. It continues a study on the pathogenesis and treatment of

anemia in pregnant women, especially of pregnant women with uterine-

efficient infection (gonorrhea, colpitis, polyhydramnion et al.)

Department of hygiene and social medicine

Areas of research: development and studying automatic

control system of heart rate variability, psychohygienic

measures to maintain student’s health in vocational-

technical schools.
