SUSAN MILAN

Susan Milan is one of Great Britain's leading flautists and an exceptionally gifted teacher. In 1974 she was the first worn~ to be appointed principal of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, thus launching an impressive solo career.

Her outstanding musicality and vivacity have led to invitations from leading orchestras in the UK and abroad. In Great Britain she has performed concertos with the London Symphony, Royal Philharmonic, Scottish Chamber and Bournemouth orchestras. She has also toured extensively throughout Europe, Scandinavia and the Far East.

Susan Milan has inspired many contemporary composers to write for her. She has given numerous world and UK premieres, among them Carl Davis' Fantasie with the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields in the 1986 Chichester Festivities and Richard Rodney Bennett's Momento at the Wigmore Hall with the Guildhall String Ensemble. Other premieres include works by Ole Schmidt, Naresh Sohal, Robert Saxton, John Rushby Smith, David Morgan and Robert Walker. The most recent work composed for Susan Milan is a concerto by Robert Simpson, to be premiered in the Malvern Festival.

Her dynamic musicianship has led to an e~clusive recording contract with Chandos which compliments her previous recordings for ASV, Hyperion, Denon and Omega. She has now compiled a wonderful array of releases available covering the major solo, chamber and recital flute repertoire.

As well as being a highly respected soloist, Susan Milan has formed a number of chamber ensembles. These include the London Sonata Group, a duo with Ian Brown, the Debussy Trio and the Instrumental Quintet of London. She performs regularly at Festivals and music clubs with these groups and broadcasts frequently for the BBC.

Having studied with John Francis at the Royal College of Music, Geoffrey Gilbert at the Guildhall School of Music and Marcel Moyse during his masterclasses in Switzerland, Susan Milan now passes on her expertise as a Professor at the Royal College of Music. Her residential masterclasses at Hindhead each summer and West Dean each Easter are immensely popular with flautists of all generations. She also gives masterclasses at the Torroella Festival in Spain. Susan was recently appointed the first woman Chairman of the British Flute Society.

In addition to her vigorous concert life, Susan enjoys a relaxed home life with her husband, two young boys and a house complete with two black cats.
