The outstanding ability and magical touch of champion rider James McDonald was to the fore once again during the Ellerslie Christmas Carnival as he guided home topweight Paisley Park (NZ) (Azamour) to take out the twenty-first running of the Dunstan Feeds Stayers Championship Final (2400m).

“I had a plan but he slipped coming out of the stalls although I still ended up into a nice enough spot,” McDonald said.

“He travelled beautifully on a nice strong tempo throughout and he was the best stayer on the day.

“He was primed and ready to run today.”

Richardson had more than one reason to celebrate the result as he was unaware of the special trainer’s bonus attached to the race whereby the winning trainer received a $21,000 voucher courtesy of Dunstan Feeds to spend at the New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale

back in January.

“I’m just stoked for my owners, my staff and the horse.

“It was a gutsy effort as he carried 3.5kgs more than the second topweight.

“We decided to go here rather than if he ran in the first three in the City Of Auckland Cup (Gr.3, 2400m) as he would have been hammered with weight in his next start.

“He’s a good horse and it’s the second time James has won the race with my colours on (Green Supreme, 2012) so I’m chuffed.”

Richardson went on to purchase Lot 804, Shocking - Pukalee under the draft of Little Avondale Stud with the $21,000 won with the trainers incentive. Dunstan is looking forward to following the sucess of this horse as he prepares for a career on the track.

FIBER FRESH BUSH FIRE SUPPORT

NEWS

Team Fiber Fresh are deeply saddened by the heartbreaking conditions of the Australian bush fires and the devastation of all those that have been affected.

In order to make a difference Fiber Fresh New Zealand united with Hygain and Mitavite Australia to commit to over 75 tonnes of feed and

supplements to support the front-line disaster evacuation centres across three of the most severely affected regions in NSW, VIC and SA.

Just over 25 tonnes of FiberProtect (1260 Bags) reached Australia to assist with the feeding of these animals that have been directly affected.

We have been overwhelmed by the support kiwis have shown this tragedy and we urge those wanting to contribute further to donate directly to registered support agencies and groups supporting victims on the ground.

WELCOME

WENDI WILLIAMSON

We would like to extend a very warm welcome to Wendi Williamson, our most recent Team Fiber Fresh Member. Wendi is no stranger to competition, having represented New Zealand on the world stage on numerous occasions. Wendi says “Waitekauri Farm is excited to be part of the Fiber Fresh and wider Dunstan team. We have

been using Fiber Fresh for a decade now and consider their high quality products as a staple of our feeding programme.” Wendi had an exceptional end to 2019 having won the right to compete at the World Cup in Las Vegas in April. Wendi then went on to qualify New Zealand an individual place at the Tokyo

Olympics later in the year. Wendi says “this will give myself and other NZ Riders a goal to strive for. A goal that will take considerable preparation and determination from this part of the world. “ We wish Wendi all the best for her Olympic campaign and look forward to sharing and

supporting her achievements.

RIA GUNSONRia has recently started with us as the Territory Manager for the Northern Regions. Ria will be working with a portfolio of the Dunstan, Fiber Fresh and Equifibre brands, so be sure to wave out if you see her around your area!

Ria was born and bred in Whangarei and currently lives in Dargaville with her partner, Thomas. Ria studied a Bachelor of Veterinary Technology at Massey University and has a keen interest and good knowledge in both equine and ruminant health and nutrition. Ria has competed since she was 5 in Eventing and Show Jumping and now competes in working hunter and RTR.

Favourite Product: “I can’t choose one! First equal between breed and grow and muscle

and shine mixed with Fiber Protect and BetaBeet (my horse is a walking bill board for this!)”

Feeding Tip: Always start your feed plan with fibre then add the right products for your horses needs. Don’t underestimate the effectiveness of slow release energy feeds and remember that ensiled fibre is 18% more digestible than dry chaff!

With many parts of the Country experiencing drought-like conditions, or certainly a significant shortfall in pasture availability, there may be the need to make some changes to your horse’s existing feeding regime.

Making some slight changes will assist in ensuring their digestive health is maintained ensuring a happier and better performing horse!

As a recommended guide, horses and ponies require a bare minimum of 1%, ideally 1.5% of their body weight, in hay/chaff or pasture daily, on a dry matter basis.

Products like beet and ensiled forages can also contribute to the horses’ daily fibre requirement and should be considered in the overall fibre contribution.

When horses have reduced pasture intake, this requirement needs to be addressed with supplementary feed.

• Good quality hay or haylage is a great starting point. It is economical and will keep the horse ‘busy’ for some time (small whole hay nets can assist in extending the ‘busy’ time). Spreading the hay/haylage offering over a 24 hour period will also avoid those with a more enthusiastic appetite from eating all at once and having longer periods of time without any forage,

which will compromise gastric health.• Further fibre can be contributed to the daily requirement via the ‘feed bin’. Significantly increasing the intake of fibre you usually combine with the concentrate feed will be a valuable change, often resulting in more efficient feed utilisation.• By using ensiled forages such as FiberProtect, the horse will have access to digestible protein, essential amino acids, such as Lysine, and Vitamin E, which may well be depleted when access to ‘green feed’ is limited. Protein levels are higher in ensiled forages, and Lysine and Vitamin E are depleted by the drying process in dried forage sources.• Ensiled products are a great addition to the feed bin as they are highly palatable and being a wet forage, they are dust-free so ideal for horses that may be struggling with the dry dusty conditions and suffer from respiratory ailments.• Providing these nutrients via the Fiber Fresh “FiberProtect”, will be especially valuable for performance horses, young stock, pregnant and lactating mares.• If horses are lighter in body condition, using a beet product like Dunstan Betabeet contributes quality fibre as well as being very calorie-dense, so great for weight gain. Well soaked, the product will assist with hydration. It is ideal

for horses travelling and away competing regularly. Remember that when doing ‘the sums’ on fibre contribution, take the dry weight of the beet

For those horses that are needing more body condition, it will be advisable to review the hard feed component of the ration also. It may simply be a case of increasing the intakes of the current concentrate or it may be necessary to move to a more calorie-dense feed.

The addition of a low intake high fat supplement would be beneficial, with a variety of highly palatable options available including Dunstan “Muscle ‘n Shine”, Dunstan “Extruded Rice” or Dunstan “Trifecta Oil”.

Ensuring adequate fibre in the ration daily will optimise digestive health, assist with feed utilisation, contribute calories and help to avoid behavioural issues associated with inadequate access to forage.
