Remember the sabbath day, and keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work. But the seventh day is a sabbath to the LORD your God; you shall not do any work -- you, your son or your daughter, your male or female slave, your livestock, or the alien resident in your towns. For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but rested the seventh day; therefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day and consecrat-ed it. Exodus 20:8-11 “June is busting out all over, all over the meadow and the hill! Buds’re bustin’ outa bushes

and the rompin’ river pushes Ev’ry little wheel that wheels beside the mill! Because it’s June, June, June. Just because it’s June, June, June!” Yes I’m a fan of Rogers and Hammerstein, and in particular Carousel. This is definitely one of my favorite musicals. Why? Well it’s set in New Eng-land, because “This was a really nice clambake, and we all had a real good time.” It is about grace and forgiveness. Yes, Billy Bigelow is given the grace opportunity of seeing his boy Bill, “Wait a mi-nute, what if it’s a girl.” Spoiler… Yes he gets the chance to see her. And at the end, even you can walk through the storm because “You’ll never walk alone.” Many of you will be taking off for wild and wonderful vacations this summer to exotic places and perhaps to a clambake or two. I hope everyone gets the opportunity to get away. Wait a minute! You mean that the pastor hopes you get away? That means you won’t be at church! Well I said vacation, not a permanent separation from us. We all need vacation/Sabbath time and I be-lieve that it is something that is not given by the “company” to its employees, but a time of renewal given by God.

Sabbath is not a day, it is a concept that God created last of all. When God finished the

work of creation he did so by creating Sabbath. “Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all their multitude. And on the seventh day God finished the work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all the work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and hallowed it, because on it God rested from all the work that he had done in creation” (Gen 2:1-3). Jesus echoed this sentiment when he and his disciples were accused of working on the Sabbath. In his usual flair of letting the Pharisees know that they truly didn’t understand the things of the law he told them, “The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath” (Mark 2:27-28). Jesus meant that Sabbath creation was for humanity not the other way around. God created human beings and pretty much knows that the body needs rest, recuperation and fun.

In Jesus’ day, the legalists were there to point out your every error, in particular when you

work on a day that the Law says “do not work.” In our day and time, we tend to work way too much. It’s as if things won’t get done if we are not there, but that’s a different sermon all together. We don’t necessarily take time to have a clam bake, or walk in a storm and let the rain refresh us, or just observe June bustin’ out all over. Sabbath not only rebuilds our personal strength, it helps console and refresh our relationship with friends and especially with our spouse and families.

Sabbath is definitely given by God to all of us, his children, and we can be assured that even when we do go on vacation, we still can and should maintain our worship and praise of our awesome God wherever we are. God is there and will never let us walk alone. For God is our shep-herd, we shall not want…, God leads us…, God restores us…, God is with us even in the scariest of places… and even in the presence of our enemies… God’s goodness and faithfulness not only is with us but it pursues us and we have the promise from this awesome Shepherd God that we will live in the Lord’s house forever (Psalm 23).

Beginning this month, we will add the below petition in our “prayers of the people” each

week for you while you are on vacation. So enjoy your Sabbath time and have a safe journey. We are praying for you.

O God, Lord of the Sabbath, we ask that you would be with those who are traveling. Place

your angels over them and keep them safe. Let no evil befall them, nor any harm come to their homes left behind. We ask for your peace, joy, refreshment, and fun for all who are vacationing. Bring them home safely; refreshed, rested, and filled with good memories. Lord in your mercy. Hear our prayer!

The 2016 Ledyard Memorial Parade will be held on Sunday, May 29. St. Luke members and friends will muster at 12:30 at Ledyard Center School. For the second year, we will sing, toss candy (and Bible verse fortune cookies) into the crowds and show our community spirit.

This annual event is a great opportunity to represent St. Luke as a valuable Ledyard institu-tion. We want everyone in our town to know who we are and Who we represent. If you haven't signed up, join us anyway. The more the merrier! Wear your God's Work Our Hands t-shirt, beach-inspired clothes or patriotic red, white and blue.

If you can't join us this year , please mark your calendars for 2017. This is a tradition worth continuing! Thank you to all who are participating!

Your Congregation Council met on Wednesday, May 18, 2016 at 7:00 pm.

Most of the meeting was spent discussing the possibility of calling an Assistant Pastor. At its meeting the previous week, the Planning Team had discussed calling an Assistant Pastor and recommended that the Council consider such a call.

The Council was concerned whether it was fi-nancial feasible to fill this position in light of Bishop Hazelwood's guidance that a call should be for a minimum of three years. The Council also needed to decide as to the portfolio of this position. Treasurer Leah Lozier, at the request of the Council at its April meeting, had devel-oped a financial plan with a three-quarter time Assistant whose portfolio would include the re-sponsibilities of the Director of Lifelong Learning and of the Communications Coordinator. The budget from those two existing positions, com-bined with an amount from the Staff Develop-ment Fund, as well money from other sources, appeared to make the calling feasible.

The Council agreed to move forward with calling an Assistant Pastor and appointed a Call Committee consisting of Trudy Flanery, Kim Haugland, Tony Larson, Elaine Lettiere, Jim Sammons, Janis Vajdos and Pastor Danny.

Many thanks to them all for agreeing to serve.

(Subsequently, because of the speed that this process was moving and the Planning Team's desire to keep the congregation informed, two information sessions were scheduled for Sun-day, May 22, 2016. At both sessions, the pre-ceding information was shared and questions were answered. The tenor from both sessions was that St. Luke should be bold and call a full-time Assistant Pastor. Your leadership heard that feeling and is reworking the financial plan.)

Also, from the Council meeting, Bookkeeper Suzanne Wingrove reported that a new insur-ance company had been retained. The previous company had cancelled St. Luke's insurance, effective May 31, 2016, because of two claims, lightening strike and water damage, in the past few years. Thank you Suzanne for your efforts.

Treasurer Leah Lozier reported that year-to-date income continues to exceed year-to-date expens-es.

Pat Wood, Facilities Support Team chair, is ob-taining quotes to install a lightening rod(s) for the church structure.

thrift store in Taftville (go see it – it’s much better organized than our tag sales!), some was given to a woman who provides clothing and utensils to homeless and formerly homeless people in New London, some was taken to local clothing drops, and the rest was taken away by an industrious family we’ve been hiring for years.

We had lots of help with the setup and sale. We brought in and set up tables and bookcases from our storage shed on Sunday, arranged and priced sale items Monday through Friday, and held the sale Friday from 6 to 8 pm and Saturday from 8 to 2. With the help of some volunteers from Em-maus, we had the place cleaned up by 4:30.

God’s mission for our lives, encounter powerful water stories from the Bible, and discover ways to live out God’s amazing love. The key verse for this summer’s VBS is “Remember that the Lord is great and awesome! Nehemiah 4:14b. Plan to catch the wave of God’s Amazing Love.

Some of the cardboard surfboards have already been painted by Sunday school children of St. Luke. Jelly fish and other sea creatures were created out of ribbons, tape, and paper. Amazing science experiments are being planned by Diane St. Laurent. Gina Williams will conduct the music. Pastor Danny is going to talk with the crab “Snappy” who will sit in the Lifeguard chair. The staff will include people from all the churches but there are still open-ings for youth grade 6 and up who would like to act as “Lifeguard” guides for each age group. Those who wish to be part of the staff talk with Mary Robinson or sign up on the bulletin board.

Registration form is included in this issue of the Scroll, on page #6, available on the bulletin board near the Fellowship Hall and on our web-site.

Sunday school All are invited to the Fellowship Hall on June 5 at the 9:30 learning hour to celebrate a final day in our 2015-2016 school year. Beginning last September our learning hours have offered Bib-lical stories which reinforced the preaching texts that Pastor Danny used. The children heard the same topics and stories as those in the worship service. These were brought alive by drama, art, song and games lead by our many teachers. Following the awarding of certificates there will

be an ice cream social. A thank you to those who have taught. Seventh and Eighth Grade: Felix Vajdos and Mary Baudro Four, Fifth and Sixth Grade: Louise Black, Paul Anderson, Karen Eisenbeiser, Michael Johnson, and Marty Wood Second and Third Grade: Carter Smith, Leah Lozier and Noelle Hale Kindergarten and First Grade: Beth Hundley and Mary Robinson Preschool: Michele Clements and Mili Dejure Suzanne Etris, Bob Nelson and Janis Vajdos of-fered assistance where and when needed.

Purpose Statement: As a community of women created in the image of God, called to disciple-ship in Jesus Christ, and empowered by the Ho-ly Spirit, we commit ourselves to grow in faith, affirm our gifts, support one another in our call-ings, engage in ministry and action, and pro-mote healing and wholeness in the church, the society, and the world. Picking up on this statement of Purpose of the Women of the ELCA, St. Luke will be offering Circles of women in Bible study. The first circle has been formed and meets on Monday evenings in the Youth Room. Gathering together we seek friendship and are able to support one another. It is using Gather Magazine a monthly publica-tion for women which contains a Bible Study guide. There are extra copies of the magazine which can be picked up from the credenza in the Narthex.

Thank you to all who organized and took orders at our Book Fair.

It’s the end of the year and we begin to wrap things up. There are many opportunities to hear the music of St. Luke—Choral Sunday, Celebrate Sunday and Hallelujah for Handbells. Please continue to support our wonderful musicians, instrumentalists, singers and ringers,

and join me in thanking them for their dedication in serving St. Luke.

June 5th Both services

June 19th

We have been extremely busy preparing for Hallelujah for Handbells. This year’s theme is “Prayers from the Ark” which is based on two books of poems. These poems are prayers “written” by animals and have been recorded by all of our ringers with video. Ledyard Animal Control will be doing a presentation and the goodwill offering will be going to them. We are also looking for donation of animal care items. Selected music includes Singin’ in the Rain; Pink Panther; Under the Sea; Baby Elephant Walk and many more.

The Prayer of the Little Bird Dear God, I don’t know how to pray by myself very well, but will You please protect my little nest from wind and rain? Put a great deal of dew on the flowers, many seeds in my way. Make Your blue very high, Your branches graceful; Let Your kind light stay late in the sky and set my heart brimming with such music that I must sing, sing, sing….. Please, Lord. Amen

St. Luke Ministry of the Month Chikumbuso Women and Orphans Project – Ng'ombe, Zambia This month we are highlighting one of our lesser known ministries, the Chikumbuso Women and Orphans Project. Most know Chikumbuso as a group of women that we pray for every week and the craft handbags that are sold periodically at St. Luke by Jeanne Steinnagel. Well, Chikumbuso is much more than that. In late 2004, Linda Wilkinson approached a group of widows living in Ng’ombe. Their families had been decimated by the HIV/AIDS crisis and they found themselves without any means for earn-ing money to care for their ever-growing house-holds. They nursed and buried their children and relatives and took in grandchildren, nieces and nephews. The first priority for the group be-came finding a means of making money. They had little formal education and leaned on artis-tic skills. The handbag project began with just a few recycled Shoprite bags, a crochet hook and a pair of scissors. Today, the group has grown to 45 widows and 25 at risk youth making beauti-ful handcrafted items. Their skills as artists and entrepreneurs have grown through various clas-ses ranging from learning about color and de-sign to financial training for both their personal and professional lives. English training has helped the women continue learning even though they dropped out of formal education many, many years ago. Their confidence has in-creased tremendously; they regularly attend lo-cal fashion shows and often find themselves speaking to organizations about the project and how they can help. If earning an income was Priority One, educating the many children in their homes became Priori-ty Two. Chikumbuso Community School began with just a few children and now educates near-ly 450 children. 300 children attend Chikumbuso for Grades 1-6. In addition to re-ceiving a quality education at no cost, Chikumbuso provides a daily nutritious meal of nshima or rice, a protein and a green vegetable. Healthy minds and full stomachs do better in school. In 2013, Chikumbuso served over 56,000 meals. How does St. Luke fit into this picture? Well,

the church includes Chikumbuso in the group of organizations that receives donations from our operating budget and the church sponsors one child. Her name is Peggy Mtonga. Even more impressive is the fact that there are several St. Luke families who are also sponsoring chil-dren in the Chickumbuso Project. Grade 7 through 12 students are sent to local communi-ty schools through the sponsorship program. Fees, uniforms and school supplies are provid-ed. They’re quite proud of their students – they do very well in their new schools as compared to their peers.

Jeanne Steinnagel coordinates our efforts with Chikumbuso. At this time the primary support that we can provide is through increased spon-sorship of children or grandmothers A child sponsorship is $600 annually while a grand-mother sponsorship is $300 annually Addition-ally, all income from hamdbag sales goes direct-ly to Chikumbuso so take a look the next time Jean has some available. If you would like fur-ther information on Chikumbuso please contact Jeanne or try the Chikumbuso website – www.chikumbuso.org .

St. Luke Community Garden Update

We have had some issues with rainy weather for a week but the work has finally begun in the garden!

Tilling was done. The beds have been raked and soaker hoses have been installed. Land-scaping covers are (mostly) down on the raised beds. Lime and fertilizer has been added dur-ing tilling.

The water system connected from the back of the church will go in this week. Some hose repair is required. All regular hoses will be connected.

A planting party will be held on a Saturday soon, to be announced. Later on this spring or sum-mer, an herb garden raised bed will be constructed and planted inside the fence in the back. Carpentry skills are needed and welcome.

Weed Wacking or mowing needs to be done once or twice a month.

If you are available to help even just one time, we would love to have you. Please see Rudy Cro-teau or Elaine Simpson if you can help out. We would love to have a team of persons for help with harvesting Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, every week. You can pick your preferred day along with alternate help on that specific day.

Produce will go to either NL Meal Center or Ledyard Food locker. If you can help deliver produce any time after harvesting, please see Rudy, Elaine Simpson or Linda Martin.

It would be good to have people "check in" on the garden each day. If you can take a specific day each week, that would be great. You will be trained in what to look for (water system, fence in-tegrity, critter damage etc.). The garden needs to be monitored every day for issues.

Thank you. This is year 5, and Rudy has some great plans for things we will accomplish.

Communications News

God’s Work, Our Hands adult large t-shirts are still available. A suggested $10 donation will help cover the cost of the shirts.

We also purchased a bright, beautiful God’s Work Our Hands banner, which will be carried in the parade. It has the church name and website printed on it. It is here to be used! Thank you to all who purchased t-shirts - we look forward to seeing you show your gold at our meal packaging event, services and other opportunities.

Church Directory Thank you to those who stepped up and offered to assist with a new church directory. With upcoming staff changes, this pro-ject will be put on hold. Please reach out to support whoever takes on this piece of St. Luke history in the future.

New Email Addresses If you get an email from staff, you may notice a change. Our email addresses now match our domain name. Old email ad-dresses (stluke.info) will still work, but mail from the church will now come from stlukegf.org. Contact emails have been changed on the website.
