Problem: The timing of the first appearance of oxygen in the Earth’s surface environment is still ambiguous

Lyons, Reinhard and Planavsky, 2014

Chadlin
Explain above graph: axes, colors, etc..-Late Archaean to early ProterozoicExplain necessity of reconstructing atmospheric oxygenation at greater resolution during transitions, especially pre-GOE.Transition: "whiff(s)" prior to GOE..."This is exactly what was done by Ariel Anbar..."

A Whiff of Oxygen Before the Great Oxidation Event?Anbar et al., 2007

• Molybdenum (Mo) enrichments in carbon-rich Mt. McRae Shale (~2.5 Ga)

• Mo is mobilized by oxidative weathering of continental sulfides

• In oxygenated waters, molybdate (MoO4

2-) has very long residence time of 800,000 years

• In sulfide-rich, anoxic waters, molybdenum is readily removed from solution

40 ppm Mo enrichment

Chadlin
Briefly explain ABDP9: Agouron drill core from Pilbara Craton, Western Australia (Summer 2004; NAI)Explain molybdenum redox: "In oxygenated waters today...and, as a result, is the most abundant transition metal in modern oceans...Black Sea...""Molybdenum has to be mobilized to accumulate in sediments,..."MENTION 40PPMTransition: "So, if we see an enrichment at 2.5 Ga, what can we see if we reach even further back?"

Agouron Institute Drilling Project (AIDP): 2012• AIDP-1: Greenschist facies

• AIDP-2: Carbonate and Shale

• AIDP-3: Offshore version of AIDP-2

Shale nearly 200 Myrs older than Mt. McRae!

Chadlin
Briefly explain new core: 2012; Western Australia, near ABDP (just north). Targeting of Roy Hill Shale (~2.7 Ga).Transition: "Though my science was focused upon AIDP2, I was responsible for the processing of all 3 drill cores..."

Preliminary Results

7 ppm Mo enrichment

Modified from Olson, 2015.

Chadlin
"We do see a Mo enrichment in the Roy Hill Shale, though it is of a lesser magnitude than the "whiff" from 2005 (40ppm vs 7ppm)..."Transition: "This enrichment posesses all hypothesized..."

Interpretation/Future Work• Enrichment possesses all hypothesized signals for oxidative

weathering of continental crust and deposition during sulfide-rich oceanic anoxia.

• Smaller “whiff” may be due to progressive atmospheric oxygenation.

• How much O2 is needed for Mo mobilization?

• Data from coordinated strata in S. Africa (Griqualand and Transvaal Basins).

• Mo isotope data from AIDP-2 enrichment interval may help tell story.
