The Second Line Of Defence
Rachel Payne
If the first line of defence, the skin fails, there is a secondary line of defence to protect your body
These are made up of different types of white blood cells
Neutrophils
Neutrophils attack bacteria
They are like soldiers on a battlefield that rush to the enemy but get killed easily
They develop in bone marrow and only live a few days before self-destructing
T Helper Cells
T helper cells are like bossesThey mark each pathogen and give signals for other cells
Each T helper marks each type of pathogen
Cytotoxic T Cells
These are the killer cellsThey punch holes in the walls of pathogen cells so the contents ooze out
Macrophages
Means ‘big eater’
These cells clean up the mess of dead cells
Dendritic CellsThese are like spies
If they find an invading pathogen they bring back evidence to the T
helper cells
B CellsThey produce antibodies which lock onto the
antigen of invading bacteria
Suppressor T Cells
Once the infection is gone, the white blood cells need to calm down to prevent getting damaged.
The suppressor cells slow down or turn off the immune system
