SIR : I have the honor to transmit herewith a statement prepared in my office, also statements from the bureaus of the Chief of Engineers and the Chief of Ordnance, United States army, containing information called for by the resolution of the House of Representatives of the 11th of February, 1868, rela­tive to amounts paid for legal services from 1860 to 1868.

No other bureaus of this department, than those above mentioned, have incurred expense or liability for legal services during the period named.

SIR: I have the honor to transmit herewith a supplemental statement of amounts paid for legal services by officers of this department, which were omitted in statement transmitted to your office on the 5th instant, in accordance with resolution of the House of Representatives, February 11, 1868.

The foregoing embraces all payments made for legal services by the Ordnance department since 1860, and all were in connection with titles to land purchased or held by the depart­ment.

It is not known to this bureau, that any other amounts arc claimed for similar services, nor that any other persons than those authorized by law are now employed as counsel by any officer of the Ordnance department.
