The Seine River No matter the season, the Seine River never fails to charm visitors in Paris. In wintertime, the dashing lightshows of the Eiffel Tower are reflected in the still water of the Seine. In summertime, the people swim in floating pools or stretch out on the sandy beaches. In autumn time, the leaves on trees turn golden brown and float down the river, followed by the numerous tour boats. So where does the Seine River begin? Lets explore this river peeps! It’s going to be totes amazing, like OMG! In the central highland plateau area of France sits a town named Burgundy. The town is known for its ancient history and amazing wine makers. Due to Burgundy’s high elevation, water flows downward and collects in a single area. Over the centuries, the water eroded the land and formed a river. This river was named the Seine. It travels from the high hills of Burgundy south through Paris and eventually empties into the English Channel . Did you know that the city of Paris is actually quite small covering a total area of 41 square miles. The cities elevation is very low and bowl shaped and is divided by the ancient Seine River. The river arches through the center of town, running throught 10 of the 20 arrondissements (a French word for small districts in Paris). The river runs all throughout Paris and has attracted of humans through the ages. In fact, Paris may not be a major city today if it were not for the Seine River. The population continues to grow in Paris because of its location on the Seine River. Paris also offers jobs, culture, and education, making the city a huge drawl for rural people in France. This concept is known as urbanization . Did you know that you can take a boat tour down the Seine River? Fo realz! It only costs about 15 Euros. Along the river you will see old buildings, the riverboats, gardens, and 32 majestic bridges that cross the Seine. As you move down the river you will pass some amazing places such as the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame Cathedral, and The Louvre museum. FACTS ABOUT THE SEINE RIVER:

The Seine flows through Paris, the capital city of France.

There are 32 bridges that run over the Seine River.

The river is slow flowing and easy to navigate.

The ashes of Joan of Arc were scattered in the Seine at Rouen.

The River Seine has served as inspiration for many of the world’s greatest artists.

Several power stations use the Seine as the source of their cooling water.

The water quality of the River Seine was quite poor in the past, but in recent years it has improved.

The water from the Seine is also used in industry and as drinking water (once it’s been treated).

Much of the important and valuable artwork in Paris is kept in underground storage rooms. If it is forecast that the Seine will flood, the artwork is moved to higher ground.
