COA Holiday Party WHEN: Thursday, December 13th
TIME: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
WHERE: A Place in Time, 53 Railroad Drive, Three Rivers
COST: $10 per person
The last day to purchase a ticket is Monday, December 3!
Happy Holidays to all our County’s senior citizens! We’re looking forward to celebrating a great
Holiday season with all of you. I hope that you’ll join us at either Enrichment Center for some of our
programs.
We are excited to announce that we officially have a wait list for our senior apartments! This is a
huge first step for COA in offering this service in St. Joseph County. We’re thrilled that the seniors
who have signed up so far share our vision for this great project. Most of our seniors on the waiting
list are saying that the reason they are wanting to make the move to the Rivers Enrichment Center
and Residence is to decrease the burden of maintaining a home on their own. This is one of the big
reasons that COA decided to provide this service; we understand that maintaining a residence can
be very difficult as people age. This can be even more difficult for those without family or friends
who can support them. If you’re struggling to maintain your residence and our senior affordable
apartments are of interest, please give us a call.
We are looking forward to the COA Holiday Party and based on the sales of tickets, a lot of you are
excited about it too! It should be another great event. We made the decision this year to move the
Holiday Party to A Place in Time in Three Rivers. We have answered a few questions about why we
made the change in location this year, so I thought I would offer an explanation. For those of you
that have attended the Party in recent years, I’m sure you’ve noticed how difficult it’s been for our
venue to accommodate all of the guests. The past couple of years it’s been necessary to set up
tables in the lobby. It became clear that we needed more space, which is the reason (and the only
reason) that we made the change. We understand the sensitivities of making a change like this and
certainly did not do so lightly; our goal for making the change is to accommodate as many seniors as
possible who wish to attend. Our two biggest events of the year are the Holiday Party and the
Volunteer Dinner. Since we’ve moved the Holiday Party to Three Rivers, we’re planning on moving
the Volunteer Dinner to Sturgis. I hope that all of our seniors know that any decision we make, we
make trying to think of what is best for all of you.
I hope all of you have a blessed Holiday season and I’ll look forward to seeing you at our Enrichment
Centers!

New Subscription Rate for
COA Newsletter
Effective January 2019, the COA newsletter,
The Senior Connection, will cost $8.00 per year if
you would like it mailed to your home. Please let
Alex in Sturgis or Pat in Three Rivers know as soon
as possible if you would like to continue to receive
the newsletter through the mail. Your 2019
subscription cost is due to the COA before
December 20, 2018.
Some factors that led to this change is that in 2018
there was a corporate sponsor for the newsletter
that helped offset some of the costs of mailing and
printing the newsletter. We no longer have that
sponsor. Also, the number of requests for the
newsletter to be sent by mail has increased and
finally, we switched to printing the newsletter
every month instead of every other month.
Please turn to Page 8 to see a list of all the
locations that carry the COA newsletter.
Pictured above are some of the students from Andrews Elementary School talking
with our senior veterans on Friday, November 9th. More than 50 fourth-grade
students were able to ask the veterans about their military experiences. The
students presented each veteran with a thank you note and/or drawing. In
Sturgis, preschoolers from First Promises Preschool in Sturgis visited the senior
center and recited the Pledge of Allegiance. The children in Sturgis also stayed for
our Veteran’s Brunch buffet.
Veterans Day 2018 Beltone Hearing Meet &
Greet with a Holiday Dessert
Representatives from Belton Hearing will be at the
Three Rivers COA on Wednesday, December 12 from
12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
They hope to introduce themselves to our seniors and
will be providing a special holiday dessert.
Beltone will be scheduling appointments beginning in
January 2019 and will be here on the second Tuesday
every other month from 9 a.m. to Noon. Their first visit
will be Tuesday, January 8.
To learn more, make plans to stop by December 12 at
12:30 p.m. in the Three Rivers dining room.

COA Quilting & Sewing Club Members
Donate Quilt to Harmony Fest
Two COA Quilting & Sewing Club members created a
beautiful quilt to donate to the Three Rivers Harmony
Fest. Pictured at left is COA member Betty Persons and
on the right is Sherry Butler, the lucky winner of the
quilt raffle. Helping Betty with the quilt was Mary
Helen Blasius.
The quilt was made out of past Harmony Fest t-shirts in
honor of this year being the 25th anniversary.
Harmony Fest is a fundraiser for the Three Rivers
Downtown Development Authority.
Thank you Betty and Mary Helen for your great support
of this community event!
The COA hosted a murder mystery dinner with several members portraying the actors. Both senior centers were transformed into a 1920s “mansion” guests enjoyed a meal before the performance. Afterwards they tried to guess who the murderer was. It was a fun evening enjoyed by all. Pictured above from left to right is: Karen Schreiber-Perlberg, Bev Rockrohr, Sue Rice, Marian Cottingham-Schleisman, Jay Schleisman, Gayle and Dale Mackinder.
