Although December can be rather cold, it’s a beautiful month that I enjoy. The recent snow was especially welcoming. We have had several construction/renovation projects occurring at our senior centers and a couple of new ones will start soon; at the Luisa Senior Center kitchen and community room we had the flooring redone and the grease trap replaced. In the next few weeks, contractors will also be working on the roof. Our apologies for the recent closure but the renovations are well worth it! We are making great progress on the Consuelo Senior Center. On a recent site visit I made there, I noticed that the center has a completely different look. Plans for completion are by March 2019 or sooner, depending on the weather. We are currently working with Santa Fe Civic Housing Authority to develop a list of items for repair and improvements for the Pasatiempo Senior Center. The dining area expansion at the Mary Esther Gonzales Senior Center had been placed on hold due to a lack of funding needed to complete the project. In an effort to move on with the project, Senior Services staff applied for and was granted the amount of funds needed to complete the project. The remainder of the needed funds will be obtained from the recent City bond which was approved in October. I am happy to report that the project is back on! We are currently looking for a contractor and plan for construction to start this spring. We certainly have a lot going on.
I want to continue to thank folks for coming in and doing their reassessments. It is important for us to get them done on a timely basis, especially since it is a mandate from our Federal funding source. If you are not sure if you need to be reassessed, please stop by the front desk at the Mary Esther Gonzales Senior Center or call 955-4721.
I would like to wish everyone a Happy Holiday season.
Please stop by the Mary Esther Gonzales Senior Center front entrance area to welcome RSVP volunteer greeter Ron Biederman.

Tuesday, January 1, 2019: All senior centers closed for New Year’s Day; centers will reopen and services will resume on Wednesday, 1/2/19.
Senior Services Reassessments
Just a reminder to please take a look at your senior services membership card and make sure it is not expired. If the date on the card has passed, please visit the front office at the Mary Esther Gonzales Senior Center (1121 Alto Street) to update your membership. It is an ongoing process, so thank you for being patient with us. If you’re not sure whether you need to come in or not it is always best to ask, so you can call our office at (505) 955-4721 to check your status. It is very important that everyone is up-to-date in our system because having a current assessment and information for each person is how we get reimbursed for the services you receive, which then allows us to continue providing those services. Thank you again!
The Santa Fe County Mobile Health Van will not be out until further notice.
For further information, call Patricia Boies, Health Services Division Director, at (505) 995-9538.

In Remembrance
Tomasita “Tommie” Ortega, loving mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on October 16, 2018. She was 74 years old. Born in 1944 in the small town of Rincon, Tommie is survived by her sons; Johnny and
Ron, daughters; Roberta and Cyndi. She is also survived by many grandchildren, friends and family that loved her dearly. Her friends from the Luisa Senior Center who she spent so much time with, having bake sales, going to dances, playing bingo, shopping and eating out, will miss hear genuine laugh and smile. Tommie was a kindhearted woman who would do anything to help the community, family or friends and for many years, she spent her time volunteering with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program and the Senior Companion Program. The clients that she volunteered with always complemented her patience and her helpfulness. Tommie loved Santa Fe, she loved to walk the plaza, shop, and most of all cook. Tommie also loved to spend her free time fishing and enjoying the outdoors. In 1999 due to a heart condition, Tommie received an artificial heart valve known as the St. Jude valve, and from that day on she was a big believer in St. Jude. She had every picture, prayer book, retablo, statue, and pendant with St. Jude on it. She believed that St. Jude prayers remind us that nothing is impossible with God. Tommie will be missed dearly.

Be a Santa to a Senior
Each year Home Instead Senior Care offices throughout the country help to
spread holiday cheer to lonely or financially-challenged seniors through the Be a Santa to a Senior program. Since the program’s inception in 2003 there have been over 60,000 community volunteers who’ve helped to provide over 1,200,000 gifts to more than 700,000 deserving seniors. Here’s how it works: Home Instead Senior Care partners with local non-profit and community organizations to identify seniors who might not otherwise receive gifts this holiday season. The company then works with local businesses and retail stores to help facilitate the purchase and distribution of gifts by placing trees and ornaments within their various locations. This year Giving Trees will be placed at both local Walmart locations, Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center and the Santa Fe Place Mall. The trees will be up mid-November thru mid-December. A wrapping party event will be held at the Mary Esther Gonzales Senior Center on December 20 at 12:30 pm. For more information please contact Ken Hendricks at Home Instead, (505) 471-2777.

Please join volunteer instructor, Rezi for “Chi Gung – energy medicine for health and harmony, embrace the universal forces of nature through sacred animal forms” at the Mary Esther Gonzales Senior Center dining room. The class focuses on slow, deliberate movements, meditation and breathing exercises to help your circulation, balance and alignment. The low-impact exercise session takes place on Thursdays from 10:00–11:00 am. For more information please call Rezi at (505) 992-1909.
A thrilling and inspiring true story begins at the precipice of World War II as, within days of becoming Prime Minister of Great Britain, Winston Churchill (Academy Award nominee Gary Oldman) must face one of his most turbulent and defining trials: exploring a negotiated peace treaty with Nazi Germany, or standing firm to fight for the ideals, liberty and freedom of a nation. As the unstoppable Nazi forces roll across Western Europe and the threat of invasion is imminent, and with an unprepared public, a skeptical King, and his own party plotting against him, Churchill must withstand his darkest hour, rally a nation, and attempt to change the course of world history.

Are you 60 plus? Hike with us!
Have you been thinking about hiking but haven’t gotten around to it? Well read on for this month’s hikes! Please note that hikes are subject to change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
Borrego/Bear Wallow Trail–Dec. 6 (1st Thursday)This 3.4 mile hike is on a well-defined path through the forest along Borrego Trail. Hike elevation is 8,240-8,900 feet so there most likely will be some snow on the ground. While snow adds to the beauty and the adventure, a normally “easy” hike like this becomes more strenuous in the snow. Bring poles and spikes (yak tracks) if you have them. Because of the likelihood of snow, this hike is not recommended for beginners.
Chamisa Trail – December 20 (3rd Thursday)This hike is a challenging continuation of last month’s Chamisa Trail hike – it adds 1.8 miles for a round trip total of 4.5 miles. Be prepared for snow on the ground and a lunch/snack by the side of a babbling brook. Bring poles and spikes if you have them and remember that snow can make hikes more strenuous.
1. Register for the hike by calling Albert at (505) 955-4715; call 24 hours in advance to cancel;
2. Arrive at the Mary Esther Gonzales Senior Center between 8:30 & 8:45 am for check-in;
3. Required: You must present your current Senior Membership card (new rule);
4. Fee/Donation: Suggested $1.00 round-trip;5. Suggested items to bring: Water, lunch/
snack, sturdy shoes, a hat, jacket and under layers and gloves;
6. Expect winter weather, so be prepared with the above items!
Special Note: a gentle reminder to all hikers that winter weather is more extreme in the mountains so dress accordingly – bring a hat, gloves, a warm jacket with under layers so you can remove if you get hot. Also remember the importance of having snacks and water!
MEG Exercise RoomVolunteer trainer Gitta Mainland will not be available to assist in the MEG exercise room for the month of December. Sorry for the inconvenience.

HEALTH & SAFETY
Enjoy a Safe Holiday Season Source: National Safety Council Holiday safety is an issue that burns brightest from late November to mid-January, when families gather, parties are scheduled and travel spikes. Take some basic precautions to ensure your family remains safe and injury-free throughout the season. Traveling for the Holidays? Be Prepared Many people choose to travel during the holidays by automobile, with the highest fatality rate of any major form of transportation. In 2015, 355 people died on New Year's Day, 386 on Thanksgiving Day and 273 on Christmas Day, according to Injury Facts 2017. Alcohol-impaired fatalities represent about one-third of the totals.
Use a designated driver to ensure guests make it home safely after a holiday party; alcohol, over-the-counter or illegal drugs all cause impairment;
Make sure every person in the vehicle is properly buckled up no matter how long or short the distance traveled;
Put that cell phone away; many distractions can occur while driving, but cell phones are the main culprit;
Properly maintain the vehicle and keep an emergency kit with you; Be prepared for heavy traffic, and possibly heavy snow.
Even Angel Hair can Hurt Decorating is one of the best ways to get in a holiday mood, but emergency rooms see thousands of injuries involving holiday decorating every season.
"Angel hair," made from spun glass, can irritate your eyes and skin; always wear gloves or substitute non-flammable cotton;
Spraying artificial snow can irritate your lungs if inhaled; follow directions carefully; Decorate the tree with your kids in mind; move ornaments that are breakable or have
metal hooks toward the top; Always use the proper step ladder; don't stand on chairs or other furniture; Lights are among the best parts of holiday decorating; make sure there are no exposed
or frayed wires, loose connections or broken sockets, and don't overload your electrical circuits;
Plants can spruce up your holiday decorating, but keep those that may be poisonous (including some Poinsettias) out of reach of children or pets; the national Poison Control Center can be reached at (800) 222-1222;
Make sure paths are clear so no one trips on wrapping paper, decorations, toys, etc.; www.nsc.org provides tips for older adults on slip, trip and fall protection.

HEALTH & SAFETYIt's Better to Give Safely We've all heard it's important when choosing toys for infants or small children to avoid small parts that might prove to be a choking hazard. Here are some additional gift-related safety tips:
Select gifts for older adults that are not heavy or awkward to handle;
Be aware of dangers associated with coin lithium batteries; of particular concern is the ingestion of button batteries;
For answers to more of your holiday toy safety questions, check out this Consumer Product Safety Commission blog;
See which toys have been recalled.
Watch Out for Those Fire-starters Candles and Fireplaces Thousands of deaths are caused by fires, burns and other fire-related injuries every year, and 12% of home candle fires occur in December, the National Fire Protection Association reports. Increased use of candles and fireplaces, combined with an increase in the amount of combustible, seasonal decorations present in many homes means more risk for fire.
Never leave burning candles unattended or sleep in a room with a lit candle; Keep candles out of reach of children; Make sure candles are on stable surfaces; Don't burn candles near trees, curtains or any other flammable items; Don't burn trees, wreaths or wrapping paper in the fireplace; Check and clean the chimney and fireplace area at least once a year.
Turkey Fryers While many subscribe to the theory any fried food is good – even if it's not necessarily good for you – there is reason to be on alert if you're thinking of celebrating the holidays by frying a turkey. The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports there have been 168 turkey-fryer related fires, burns, explosions or carbon monoxide poisoning incidents since 2002. CPSC says 672 people have been injured and $8 million in property damage losses have resulted from these incidents. NSC discourages the use of turkey fryers at home and urges those who prefer fried turkey to seek out professional establishments or consider new oil-less turkey fryer. Don't Give the Gift of Food Poisoning The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services provides some holiday food safety tips. Here are a few:
Do not rinse raw meat and poultry before cooking; Use a food thermometer to make sure meat is cooked to a safe temperature; Refrigerate food within two hours; Thanksgiving leftovers are safe for four days in the refrigerator; Bring sauces, soups and gravies to a rolling boil when reheating; When storing turkey, cut the leftovers in small pieces so they will chill quickly; Wash your hands frequently when handling food.
Stay safe and healthy this holiday season!
