THE SENTINEL AUGUST 2014 NEWS FOR MEMBERS & FRIENDS OF FIRST (SCOTS) PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 53 MEETING STREET, CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA 29401 A CONGREGATION OF THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH (USA) ORGANIZED IN 1731 HANDS OF CHRIST IS READY TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL In 2013 we served over 4,522 children. How many will we serve this year? Possibly 5,000 children in 5 counties! And every one of those children will spend time with an individual, VOLUNTEER “personal shopper.” They and their families also will interact with registration VOLUNTEERS, checkout VOLUNTEERS, VOLUNTEERS who will pray and chat with them while they wait their turn, VOLUNTEERS who bag up their school supplies, VOLUNTEERS who help the child and the shopper find the correct size socks, clothing and underwear and VOLUNTEERS who offer them a Bible as they leave. Obviously, there is the need for a lot of VOLUNTEERS. Where do you fit in? By volunteering, of course! You can sign up to volunteer by emailing Catherine Byrd at: [email protected] You also can sign up at the display in the Fellowship Hall. Please include your e-mail if you would like a reminder. **Fri/Sat Aug 1/2—Downtown Chas @ Zion-Olivet Presbyterian 5 p.m./8:30 a.m.; **Mon Aug 4— Hanahan @ Yeamans Park Presbyterian 3 p.m.; Tues/Wed Aug 5/6—Berkeley County @ First Presbyterian Moncks Corner 3 p.m.; **Thu/Fri/Sat Aug 7/8/9 North Charleston @ Park Circle Presbyterian 4 p.m./4 p.m./8:30 a.m.; Mon Aug 11--Summerville Presbyterian 3 p.m.; Tues Aug 12—McClellanville @ New Wappetaw Presbyterian 3 p.m.; Wed Aug 13--Walterboro @ Bethel Presbyterian (downtown) 3 p.m.; Thu/ Fri/ Sat Aug 14/15/16—West Ashley @ Westminster Presbyterian 4 p.m./4 p.m./8:30 a.m. Times given are volunteer arrival times. Distribution starts 45-60 minutes after and lasts about 2 hours after which volunteers enjoy a meal together. ** Indicates the greatest need for volunteers! This summer forty-eight youth and adults served on mission teams to Philadelphia and Nashville. In Philadelphia our group teamed up with Broad Street Ministry and assisted people in that community including those experiencing homelessness, battling addictions, spending time in jail, and more. One of the most meaningful parts of that trip was participating in Breaking Bread which is a ministry where hundreds of hungry community members are fed four meals each week. There are no lines at these meals as guests are served by waiters at tables with tablecloths. In Nashville, our team worked with Group Mission Trip’s Week of Hope and participated in community service projects that provide aid to people in need. In work crews of six, our team helped elderly residents in public housing with cleaning projects, assisted a church sponsored children’s program in a low income neighborhood, addressed hunger issues in the community, and more. One highlight from that trip was the gratitude expressed by those we served and the prayers they offered on our behalf. Thanks for supporting the mission work of the church through your prayers, contributions to the church budget, and support of our mission trip fundraisers. You enabled our mission teams to share and experience the powerful, life changing love of Jesus Christ!

WALKING THE MOURNER’S PATH -Together we can do what I cannot do alone” Gary E. Vogel, M.A. 1993

A unique new ministry to First (Scots) – Walking the Mourner’s Path will begin on Wednesday, September 17th, in the Parlor meeting from 6:45 pm (following supper) until 8:15 pm for 8 consecutive weeks. This workshop is open to friends and neighbors as well as members.

Walking the Mourner’s Path differs from many ongoing “grief support groups” in that, as research has shown, structured programs with a beginning and an end are far more successful. The Mourner’s Path course consists of one and a half hour sessions for eight consecutive weeks. Each session has two facilitators. Our facilitators will be Rev. Maggie Beamguard and Mary Robinson who have attended a facilitator training workshop.

The program is a ministry distinct from other bereavement programs in that it is Christ-centered, scripturally sound and church based. It is not group therapy but is spiritually directed. Call the church office (722-8882) to sign up by September 1, 2014 so materials can be ordered in time to begin. Group size will be limited to 10 participants.

UPDATES

This month we are continuing a new column “Ask Dr. (Scot)!” Ever wondered how things work behind the scenes of this vibrant congregation? Get your burning questions answered by Dr. (Scot) himself. Simply email your inquiry to Lolli at [email protected] and she will forward them to the doc. Please note “Ask Dr. (Scot)” in the subject line.

Dr. (Scot), why am I asked to sign the Friendship Pad each Sunday in church? - Signed, Why My John Hancock

I’m glad you asked, Mr. Hancock! The friendship pad provides useful information on so many levels. First, by signing and passing the Friendship Pad down the pew, others can note with whom they are worshipping and can greet one another by name. The information also helps our Membership Coordinator determine which members are active and who may need to be contacted by our Congregational Care Committee. The church staff also uses this data to determine attendance and planning for resources during future worship services.

Session Notes from July Be on the lookout! Our church Session is planning to conduct some listening sessions soon where our church family can share concerns and convictions together as we live out our discipleship following recent actions by our PC(USA) General Assembly. The process we will use for this family sharing will be revealed in the coming weeks.

Our Church Welcomes New Stephen Ministers!

Our Stephen Ministry welcomes John and Pat Dietz as our newest members of our Leadership Team. They will be traveling August 3rd‐9th to Pittsburgh, PA for the Stephen Series Leader’s Training Course. They will join dozens of  denominations  from  across  the  U.S.  for  the  seven‐day  course  to  learn  how  to  share  Jesus’  love  and  care through  this  special  ministry.  They  will  comb  through  the  3,000  page  Leader’s  Manual  that  makes  up  the       backbone of the ministry. The role of a Stephen Leader is to direct Stephen Ministry in the congregation. They are the ones who recruit, select,  train, and supervise Stephen Ministers, and they  locate people with needs for care  and  match  them  to  a  Stephen  Minister.  They  also  build  awareness  regarding  Stephen  Ministry  in  the        congregation.  This  training  differs  from  the  50  hours  of  training  that  Stephen  Ministers  receive  in  the                congregation  in  its  focus  on  the  administrative  and  supervisory  aspects  of  Stephen  Ministry.  Our  Stephen        Ministry at First  (Scots) will be recruiting new Stephen Ministers  this  fall  to receive  the  training  in caregiving skills that Stephen Ministers use in their caring relationships. John and Pat join the existing Stephen Leader team comprised  of Boyce Cox,  Sherry Cox, Art Gatewood, Betts Gatewood  and  Steve Harth.  If  you would  like more     information about Stephen Ministry, how to receive care from a Stephen Minister or how to become a Stephen Minister, please contact any of the Stephen Leaders or Rev. Maggie Beamguard at 722‐8882.

Aging in Place: A Resource for You by Dr. Rick Reed Senior centers are designated as community focal points through the Older Americans Act. The National Institute of Senior Centers defines a senior center as a place where “older adults come together for services and activities that reflect their experience and skills, respond to their diverse needs and interests, enhance their dignity, support their independence, and encourage their involvement in and with the center and the community.” In various needs assessment reports, seniors value senior center activities and services to help them maintain independence as one of the most important services to compliment Aging in Place. Within this structure, respondents viewed exercise and having someone to talk to as the most valuable asset of a senior center. In Charleston, charges are very reasonable and in the $100/year range for local residents. Participants range in age from 50 to well in the 90’s. Most are independent. Minorities are well represented. Socialization is the priority and for some this is the only social contact they have. There are many regulars and the most consistent are in exercise classes that allow clients to continue their social group in snack or meeting rooms. Exercise is key to preventing morbidity and mortality, mental deterioration and falls. Senior Centers are excellent “laboratories” for observations about senior mobility, socialization, levels of health and barriers to accessibility; and staff are trained to provide programs that meet needs in these areas. Numerous volunteers provide a very friendly setting. Having programs that are portable to bring to seniors with difficulty getting out is being developed at many SC’s. Exercise equipment varies in quality and amount. Basic aerobic activity needs are met with cycles, treadmills and rowers. Dance and aerobic classes are highly popular and the spaces can double as meeting rooms. Frequently there is a computer room and a crafts room with small library. Table games are set up in open spaces where events also can be staged. Some centers provide outdoor access to a fit trail or walking path loop or even a therapeutic healing garden. Although buses provide convenient routes, the vast majority (about 75%) live within 7-10 miles and drive. Some are driven or accompanied by helpers or family. Parking is usually ample. On many days the exercise begins with a walk to the Center from the parking lot. Many centers are able to accommodate seniors with limitations or who are in various advanced stages of rehab as long as accompanied by low skill help. Some partner with rehab health care to provide a setting for continued exercise and mobilization after insurance coverage is exhausted. Some function more as  Adult Day Care Centers and still others provide meals as a group dining site. A nurse may be present periodically for BP checks or limited consultation. Many centers provide health, wellness and health care options education.

Quiet Church Bag Idea of the Month: Sticky Shape Maker

A clever and simple idea! Cut a square of coarse sandpaper small enough to fit in your child’s quiet church bag. Cut various lengths of different colored yarn. Your child can make different shapes by placing the yarn on the sandpaper and it will hold in place!
