Burgett. Of this amount, five were for commercial building at a valua- tion of 28,746 and one for in- dustrial building for $8,000, Ten permits were issued for construction of garages at a valu- ation of $14,864. Permits were issued for home repairs or al- terations for $26,009 and 11 were for construction of homes at an approximate $159,500 value. a- Sparta Avenue To Be Widened The widening of Sparta Avenue to a four-lane highway from the Sparta Village limits south toM- 37 has been included in the 1970 proposed road improvements, according to Mr. David Groenleer of the Kent County Road Com- mission who made the announce- ment Monday. 0 —— Ladies Auxiliary Potluck Supper Ladies auxiliary to Lamoreaux Bros. Post 7579 V.F.W. will hold a potluck supper at 6:30 Wednes- day evening, February 19, in the American Legion hall on S. State Street. The supper is for the entire family and each person Is requested to bring a dish to pass and own table service. VVJLDCATJ February 14 Is Deadline For Paying 1968 Taxes NOTE TO KENT COUNTY PROPERTY OWNERS: If you haven't paid your 1968 taxes yet, time is running out! Property owners have until Friday, February 14, in which to pay taxes. Late payments starting February 15 Involve an additional 3 percent penalty charge and all unpaid taxes will be returned to the county as delinquent on February 28. Dog licenses are also due and should be paid at the same time to the treasurer of the township in which the dog owner resides. SPARTA ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION SETS FEBRUARY 17 MEET Sparta Parents Athletic Association will meet at 7:30 on Monday evening, February 17, in Room 35 of the Sparta Senior High School. All parents of students partici- pating in atmetics and all other interested persons are invited to attend. Steven Wever The rank of Eagle Scout will be conferred on Steven Wever of the Sparta Boy Scout Troop 280 Court of Honor to be held at 7 o'clock on Monday evening, February 17, at the Sparta Civic Center. Steve, 15, Is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Hessel Wever of 108 Terrace Drive, Sparta, and a freshman at Sparta High School. In receiving the rank of Eagle Scout, Steve will be the fourth member of the local troop to be so honored. Steve started in Scouting as a Bobcat Cub Scout at the age of eight and advanced through the ranks of Wolf, Bear, Lion, and WeBeLos. He joined the Sparta Boy Scout Troop at the age of eleven and progressed along the Scouting trail to earn the coveted Eagle rank. During this time he has earned a total of 23 merit badges. His record of service Includes serving his troop as assistant patrol leader, patrol leader, assistant senior patrol leader, and senior patrol leader. Steve is a member of the Sparta United Methodist Church. His school activities include serving as treasurer of the Freshman class and playing In the band. He Is also a member of the freshman basket ball team and played football on the junior var- sity team. The highest rank available in Scouting requires the completion of at least 21 merit badges (many of which are specified), service and conservation projects, and exemplifies outstanding leader- ship qualities. The award is presented after recommenda- tions by his teachers and those who know him, his appearance before a District Board of Re- view, and approval by the National office of the Boy Scouts of Amer- ica. Westgate Nursery Children Visit Dentist A visit to the office of Westgate dentist, Dr. Jack Slot, located at 690 Netherfleld, Comstock Park, was an exciting experience for the twelve youngsters in the Westgate Nursery School. Dr. Slot demonstrated on one of the youngsters how teeth are cleined and explained to them the Importance of early care of their teeth. Shown with the youngsters are Mrs. Carol Galle, left rear, and their teacher, Mrs. Donna Neilson. The Nursery School plans future trips to the post office and fire station. Meeting three times each week In the Westgate United Methodist Church, the school Is under the direction of Mrs. Neilson who Is assisted by mothers of the children. SPARTA Mrs. Marian Telder, Sparta Township Treasurer, reports that she will be at her office at 156 E. Division Street, Spar- ta, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, February 14 and 15, and also from 9 a.m. to 12 noon on Thursday, Feb- ruary 27, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, February 28. Tax payments may also be made by mall. Mrs. Telder reports that 52.559 per cent of the $637,253.35 tax roll had been collected as of January 31. ALGOMA Mrs. Doris Gray, Algoma Township Treasurer, stated this week that payments may be made by mail or in person between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Fridays, February 14, 21, and 28, at her home located at 11332 Grange Avenue, Sparta, She reports that 55.3 per cent of the $198,530.20 tax roll had been collected by February 5. TYRONE Mr. Mil ton Wylie, Tyrone Township Treasurer, stated that he will collect taxes between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Friday, February 14, at the Kent City State Bank. Commencing Satur- day, February 15, taxes may be paid to Mr. Wylie at his home located at 14541 Barber Creek Drive, Kent City. These may also be paid by mail. At the end of January, approxi- mately 55 per cent of the more than $190,000.00 tax roll had been collected in Tyrone Township, according to Mr. Wylie. O Choral Festival Saturday at Coopersville District 7 Solo and Ensemble Choral Festival will bo held all day Saturday, February 15, com- mencing at 9 a.m. at Coopers- ville High School. The Spartan Madrigals plus so- loists within this group and two others from the varsity choir will participate. Soloists are Patty Bullis, Charlotte Bowne, Vern Lamb, Beth Pulslfer, Reu- ben Rodriguez, and Cindy Schmidt. Accompanists are Darla Murray, Dayna Murray, and Becky Waller. Two hundred and ten ensemble members and 137 soloists are registered for this event which will be under the chairmanship of Mr. Jack Boeskool.
