Wersquove been thinking about the cover of this Sentinel edition for a few months now Irsquove always enjoyed
thinking about the patron saints of the schools that I have worked in There was so much to learn from my time at the schools named Good Shepherd and St Monica The image of the Good Shepherd is such a poignant image for me and the story of St Monica who prays fervently for her errant son is relevant for all of us
We enjoy the particularly touching name of Holy Family not because we believe that we have all fully arrived at creating our own holy family but because our school name is such a wonderful reminder that we are called to this beautiful image of a loving family Like the phrase goes wersquore a work in progress so donrsquot despair but take note of some of the traditions of our school families I think yoursquoll find wonderful ways to build the faith of your family
I think God knew what he was doing when he gave children to young parents but they may also be the ones still gaining comfort in praying as a couple and as a family It is Godrsquos plan that our children help us stretch and grow as we try to lovingly create the family culture We know intrinsically that our children will benefit most from the traditions and habits that our families help to instill And so I encourage you in this season of the holy family to remember that you too are a holy image of a father and a mother with similar hopes and dreams of Joseph and Mary Be bold and bow your heads together bless your children and pray with sincerity you are a holy family
Wishing you a blessed Christmas

Our 2nd and 3rd graders have the opportunity to participate in Children of Mary This after school program gives children the opportunity to grow in love and devotion for Our Mother Mary They meet every first Friday of the month to pray and learn the Rosary and discuss ways to become lsquochildren of Maryrsquo Itrsquos a very special group

What makes a holy family
14
In honor of the Church celebrating ldquoThe Year of the Familyrdquo we have dedicated this Sentinel edition to finding out ldquowhat makes a holy familyrdquo We asked you to tell us how your family reiterates the church teachings and practices faith traditions We were delighted to find so many families put Christ and the Church at the center of their lives
What are your familyrsquos spiritual practices and traditions
We pray at meals and at bedtime
We attend Mass on Sunday
We bless each child daily ldquoThe Lord bless you and keep you May you grow in Jesusrsquo loving friendship and be faithful to His calling for yourdquo
We pray over our deceased pets hamsters and birds that we have buried
During Advent Christmas we get together to pray around the Jesse tree
We follow the history of Salvation through Scripture
We set up the nativity scene
We celebrate the Baptism day of each family member as a sign of their start as a Christian
We spend the beginning of December celebrating Advent rather than Christmas slowly bringing out Christmas decorations as we get closer to Christmas
What makes a holy family
15
Track We pray the rosary as a family having each child lead a decade
We keep our tree up till Epiphany
We have a strong devotion to Mary in our family because she always leads you to the heart of Jesus
Every meal in our family is time to give thanks and celebrate our blessingsWe connect in the kitchen and at the dinner table
What practices help to develop the faith of family members
My children listen to CDrsquos of children bible songs and nursery rhymes
We celebrate the saints and learn about their lives
We make sure our children understand the ldquorealrdquo reason we celebrate Christmas and Easter
We befriend our parish priests
We encourage our children to be Altar Servers
We incorporate Christ into all holidays
At Mass we sit in the front pew because it helps the kids see the Mass
We recognize special feasts
We keep sacramentals as reminders throughout the home
Even though it is difficult we try to communicate through issues and whenever there is a hard issue we deal with it with truth and put it in the light
We pray the Stations of the Cross
As we journey through this Advent season we come to realize our preparation for Jesus does not end with Christmas and his birth but begins as we take our rituals and meld them into our daily lives We hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
