The Sheffield College The Comenius Project is running in collaboration with schools in Germany, England and Greece. The project has been developed to integrate students from other countries to work together to design and build an orphanage in the Philippines. The orphanage will be a home to small children who have lost their parents and currently live on rubbish dumps, salvaging anything they think is worth selling. The project involves Electrical, Plumbing and Civil Engineering students from the Sheffield College and students from the partner colleges in Germany and Greece. Students from all three countries have met in Germany and Greece to finalise the civil engineering, plumbing and electrical designs for the orphanage. Gary Mallon, Built Environment lecturer will be joined by students, Moritz Munser and John Rowland (Built Environment) Ben Clewes, and Adam Leonard (Plumbing) and Mahew Livesey (Electrical) who will travel to Cebu in the Philippines in February 2012 to help complete the building of the orphanage. The English and German teams left their respective home cities in the early hours of Sunday morning and arrived in an uncharacteristically cold and rainy Athens in the early afternoon. After checking into the hotel, the students and staff from the three colleges spent a pleasant evening together at a local restaurant eating, drinking and getting to know one another.

The morning was spent at the Maltezo solar heating company. The teams were given an interesting presentation by the factory manager, followed by a tour of the production area. The afternoon was given over to an organised tour of the Greek parliament in central Athens, followed by an evening of excellent Greek cuisine in a local taverna.

The day began with the teams working on the planning for the orphanage. Each team carried out an excellent presentation culminating with inter-collegegroups discussing the mechanical, electrical and civil engineering designs for the Philippines. The afternoon consisted of a trip to the local beach, with swimming and pizza at the top of the menu.

Everyone was up bright and early to embark on a long, but worthwhile coach trip to Delphi and the ancient sanctuary of Apollo. A stunning setting with architecture that dates back to the dawn of civilisation. A fabulous day of culture was topped off with the evening meal, for which the students were treated to a long awaited T Bone steak!

Another fantastic trip, this time across the Corinth canal to the beautiful Peloponnese peninsula . The team were treated to visits to the ancient sites of Mycenae and the Cyclops Walls. The day culminated in a visit to beautiful Napflio, the former capital city of Greece.

Throughout the morning and early afternoon the teams worked on finalising the designs for the childrens’ home. The early evening involved a trip to the go-cart track and some terrifying displays of driving! From the evening into the early hours everyone enjoyed wonderful local food, drink and Bouzouki music at a restaurant in Athens.

An excursion into the city and a visit to the Planetarium was topped off by a long awaited trip to the Acropolis of Athens with its wealth of ancient monuments. The stunning vistas across the city from the top of the Acropolis left an indelible impression on everyone involved.

Final arrangements for the trip to the Philippines were made and thanks given to our Greek hosts for their wonderful hospitality. Goodbyes were said and E mail addresses exchanged. The teams headed home knowing that important work had been completed and friendships had been formed. Next stop, Cebu and the completion of the orphanage.
