MIDLANDS MECCANO GUILDThis year, they are celebrating their 50th Anniversary, and their stand will feature two winners of the prestigious Issigonis Shield voted for by all the exhibitors at the Annual Skegness Meccano Exhibition. The Dambuster Lancaster, making a return visit, won nearly 25 years ago in 1983 whilst Brooklands Garage was last year's winner. These will be supported by a variety of other models.

140 YEARS SINCE THE BIRTH OF WENMAN JOSEPH BASSETT-LOWKE & 70 YEARS SINCE THE DEATH OF HENRY GREENLYA Bassett Lowke Super Enterprise Live Steam 0 gauge 4-6-0 engine and 4 Gresley Syle Teak Coaches. These were manufactured between 1937 and 1950 and the locomotive has recently been carefully restored to its present condition.

"Challenger" designed by Henry Greenly and built by Bassett Lowke Ltd to compete against LBSCs coal-fired 4–4–2 "Ayesha". "Challenger" was a spirit fired 2-8-2 based on LMS practice designed by Greenly specially for the battle which took place in 1924. It is claimed that the battle resulted in a tie although "Challenger" was later fitted with a coal fired boiler. Kindly loaned by The Steam Workshop.

Our Engineering In Miniature Workshop gives you the opportunity to see demonstrators at work and ask them all the questions you might have about a particular issue you have experienced.

DEREK BROWN Based in Rutland for over 30 years, Derek Brown has been intrigued with model engineering since a schoolboy, keen on locomotives in 00, 0, 3½”, 5” and 7¼” gauges and also very interested in the development of tooling and perfecting various methods and techniques. He has made many contributions to the model engineering press and has travelled the country giving talks to model engineering societies. A keen, but lapsed, pianist and repairer of church clocks, Derek is perhaps best known for his work on drill sharpening and metric screw cutting and not least for the books he has published, including the latest one on injectors.Workshop Work: A demonstration of steam injectors.

ALAN SAVELIOBased in Nottinghamshire for many years, which is also the birthplace of the Myford lathe, Alan has always taken a keen interest in engineering and experimental design. A passion for new technologies has motivated Alan to develop a CNC conversion kit for the Myford Super 7 lathe which is unique and has not been based on anyone else’s design. It was heralded as an “Incredible piece of equipment” by Myford’s own marketing team at Beeston in Nottingham. He is looking forward to answering many questions; so, don’t be afraid to ask him. He is also hoping to try out your machining suggestions which should be fun too! Alan now has a growing popularity through his YouTube channel ‘cncyourmyford’ that shows many useful applications that model engineers and designers could use a CNC Myford lathe for, including loco wheel profiling, axle turning and also multi-start threading to name but a few.Workshop Work: CNC lathe demonstrations to highlight the lathes versatile capabilities and distinct advantages over using manual lathes.

PETER STEVENSON Peter will be presenting a lecture on shaping sheet metal and has vast experience of forming metal by shrinking and stretching. He has made many parts for the Collett safety valve – make sure you go along and gain from his invaluable experience for your own projects.Workshop Work: A selection of some part finished domes showing the stages needed to produce them.

EIM WORkSHOP OUR LECTURERS & LECTURES COMPETITION & DISPLAy INFORMATION

We are very pleased to be able to present for your enjoyment a very full lecture programme. Below are details of our lecturers and what they will be presenting for your enjoyment. All lecturers take place in the lecture theatre which can be found at the rear of Hall 1, please exit the building by the rear door next to the cash machine.

PHIL ABBOTT Steam In Model BoatsLooking at the various designs of steam plants and layouts for model boats.

DEREK BROWN 3D modelling - Warts and all! The lecture considers the principles behind 3D modelling and how it differs from the traditional CAD process. The method is different from beginning to end and consequently gives rise to all sorts of problems, some of which might be foreseen but others which take the user by surprise. It is a brilliant concept but for certain applications can be the biggest time-waster known to man. Comparisons are made between the mental torture which has to be endured in both processes and it is hoped that the session will stimulate interest and curiosity in the systems available.Derek will also be in the workshop for hands on advice.

DAVID FIELDHOUSE The process of making scale locomotive plates using home CNC machinery and tooling available to the Model Engineer. This talk will explode some of the myths associated with some CNC topics. It will cover; Importance of research to minimise problems, Demonstration of producing the CAD drawing, Tooling required Commercial and grinding homemade cutters, Alleviating the need for any G code knowledge, Steps in the machining process & machining time, The importance of spending time for painting preparation, Painting and finishing the plates.

ANGUS FRENCH & PATRICK HENDRA Youngsters in model engineeringThis a real fun demonstration/talk. Patrick will introduce the Eastleigh Young Engineers (aged between 10 and 17) and then hand over to Angus. He will introduce the younger members who will tell you all about what they are making, how their models work and then demonstrate them. Angus will then tell you about his latest creations. Patrick will wind up with some thoughts on Junior Members in our Clubs and D&T in the Schools. Many of the youngster’s models are in the Competition Section of the exhibition.

KEITH HALESilver soldering - a simple process made difficultEverything you wanted to now about Silver Soldering – but were afraid to ask.Keith, with his 48 years experience, discusses the necessary joint designs, joint cleanliness and heating techniques. Following the guidelines will give the model engineer the knowledge to produce strong leak-tight joints quickly, simply and economically. On lecture days, he will also be available on the CuP Alloys stand to discuss individual cases.

CHRIS STAPLETONThe dos, don’ts and “oh hell” of paintingThis talk will cover all the Do’s and Don’ts of painting presented by Chris Stapleton of Phoenix Paints. There will also be an open Q&A Session at the end so feel free to come and ask all the questions you’ve always wanted the answers to.

PETER STEVENSONSome thoughts on shaping sheet metalA talk about forming metal by shrinking and stretching and how to go about it. Including DVD footage of the making of the Collett safety valve, bonnet and dome.Peter will also be in the workshop for hands on advice.

JOHN MOORHOUSE & JOHN FARMERMechanical music, singing birds and automataThe talk will give an initial insight into this wide topic. It will show geared mechanisms and how they are governed and ways in which the music can be created. Aspects of design, repair and restoration will be included.

GARY WOODINGInteresting properties of precious metalsOK so you know that silver steel is harder than mild steel and that stainless steel doesn’t oxidise but how much do you know about platinum, gold and other precious metals? In this presentation you will hear about the characteristics of a wide variety of materials and how these determine the way in which jewellery is made to be attractive, practical and durable. Gary is a model engineer who has been hand-making quality jewellery for over 55years. This talk is not about making jewellery but rather about the materials of jewellery and how they could be used by the Model Engineer!
