St. Odilo Church is the only parish in the United States dedicated to the Souls in Purgatory. It was founded and sanctioned as the Shrine of the Poor Souls by His Eminence, George Cardinal Mundelein, in 1928, with a special indulgence of 200 days granted upon each visit to the shrine.

The Sanctuary and the Sacristy You may remember this announcement from The Shrine on June 14, 2020 when we re-opened the church for Mass.

Please do not come to the sacristy after Mass on Sundays or weekdays. In order to promote social distancing and health safety during the medical crisis, the priests will not be shaking hands and visiting in the church vestibule after Mass. Neither will we be able to receive visitors in the sacristy after Mass. If you need to speak with a priest, please call the rectory during the week to speak on the phone or schedule an appointment.

The priests do enjoy visiting you after Mass in the vestibule. However, because of the health and safety protocols, we have to limit our contact until we return to more normal procedures. Please do not see this announcement as an attempt to be unfriendly or antisocial. This is just a temporary request until we can return to our more open patterns of behavior.

I am noticing that more and more people are coming into the sacristy before and after Masses on Sundays and weekdays and passing through the sanctuary (altar area) to do so. Please refrain from entering the sanctuary and sacristy areas before, during and after Masses and other devotions.

It makes little sense to prohibit altar boys and other ministers from being in the sanctuary during Mass for health safety reasons, then to have various visitors in the sanctuary and sacristy before and after the sacred services.

Furthermore, in the case of the sanctuary, that is the holy of holies in a Catholic church. The

tabernacle holding the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Blessed Sacrament is housed in the sanctuary. The altar for Mass is in the sanctuary. The Sacraments are administered in the sanctuary. In a Catholic church the sanctuary is the holy of holies and is not to be entered unless one has a sacramental purpose, and is certainly not to be used as a passageway for ordinary foot traffic to get to the sacristy for non-sacramental reasons. It is a shock to the higher sensibilities or religious feelings (disedifying) to see how many people walk back and forth through the sanctuary without any reverence to Jesus in the tabernacle just to talk to the priest.

Finally, please consider that the priest tries to pray and meditate upon the sacred duty he is

about to perform before Mass. The priest is also required by Church law to give due thanksgiving to God after Mass for the great gift he has been given by his ordination to offer the sublime Sacrifice. This can hardly be done with so much cacophony before and after Mass in the sacristy.

If you do have a need to speak with a priest or deacon, please call the rectory and make an

Dear Archdiocese community, We have faced unprecedented challenges this year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Loved ones have sickened and, in some cases died. We have had to adjust to drastic changes in the way we live our lives. As Catholics committed to defending life, we are called to take responsibility for the welfare and safety of our community. This year, that means wearing a mask, washing our hands and taking other precautions to prevent the spread of this deadly virus. Archdiocese of Chicago personnel have worked hard these past few months to plan and execute preventive measures so we could open our churches and schools safely. All our hard work might have less impact though, if we don’t take one more step and get our influenza immunizations as soon as possible. While it’s known as the common flu, there’s really nothing common about influenza in 2020. Without a doubt, this will be the most important flu shot you will ever receive. In the coming weeks, we will witness a convergence of both viruses – influenza and COVID-19. Common flu symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat and extreme fatigue are similar to COVID-19 symptoms. Health care providers can become overwhelmed by patients mistaking one infection for the other. Influenza can be, in itself a serious illness. More than 200,000 Americans are hospitalized each year with the flu. While most people recover completely in one to two weeks, some develop very serious and potentially life-threatening complications such as pneumonia. Over the past decade, influenza and pneumonia have been linked to an annual average of 3,500 deaths in Illinois, alone. Nobody likes getting shots. I certainly don’t, but I got mine this month. This Wednesday, October 7, the Church celebrates the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. This feast commemorates the victory of the outnumbered Catholic forces over the Ottoman Turks in the Battle of Lepanto on October 7, 1571. This decisive battle, which staunched the incursion of the Turkish forces into Italy, was attributed to the Catholics praying the Rosary at the direction of Pope Pius V. Throughout history, other military victories, even here in the U.S.A., have been attributed to our Blessed Mother’s intercession in response to those persons besieged praying the Holy Rosary.
