• supply lines to Richmond cut

• Richmond surrenders in April 1865

Sherman’s March to the Sea

Who: William Sherman (U)

Where: Atlanta to Savannah, GA

What Happened: • Sherman took control of Atlanta and wanted to march to Savannah to end the war•waged total war by destroying everything in sight

Significance:• the deep

South was almost all in USA hands

• Lincoln was able to win reelection because the war was almost won

Battle of Bentonville

March 19-21, 1865

Who: William Sherman (U) & Joseph E. Johnston (C)

Where: Bentonville, NC

Who Won: USA1,527 USA casualties2,606 CSA casualties

Significance:• the last of

many battles between Sherman and Johnston

• Johnston surrenders at Bennett Place a month later
