a smile to my face, instead of me asking him about his own re-lationship with Jesus, the man, prompted by the Holy Spirit, just dived right in. He looked straight at me and asked, Isnt it time I asked Jesus to be my Savior?

Now that you put it that way, yes it is! So we prayed together, and he received the Lord Jesus into his life. Thats one of the great-est joys I know, to lead some-one into a saving knowl-edge of Jesus.

In John 4, Jesus has a conversa-tion with a Samaritan woman that moves in the same direction as my conversation with that man. From a general conversation about her life, to more involved talk about religion in general, to the deepest spiritual need for our hearts to be remade through Jesusthe Lord led the woman on a spiritual journey ending in her salvation. Each of us has op-portunities every day to engage in the same kinds of conversa-tions. Lost people are all around us, and all we need to do is lis-ten to their stories and be faith-ful in sharing Jesus with them.

Our Week of Refreshment is the first week of August, and I cant

wait! This has been a long, hot summer, and all the activities of fall are right around the cor-ner. Weve set aside the first few days of August (2-5 at 7 p.m. nightly in the Worship Center) as an opportunity for our church family to come together for a time of refreshment, renewal and restoration. Regi Stone is our guest worship leader for the first few days, and youre going

to be so bless-ed through his ministry! To learn more about him, check out his

website at registone.com. John-son Dorn from Hope Chapel in Saluda will be bringing a fresh word from God Sunday night through Tuesday night. Then on Wednesday night, August 5, were hosting Charles Billingsley for a special Night of Worship. Charles is a nationally known worship leader and song writer who will touch all our hearts. Be sure to check him out at charles-billingsley.com.

This is going to be an awesome week, and I want to give you a personal invitation to set aside whatever else you might be do-ing for the days of August 2-5 and invest an hour or so each night in spiritual refreshment.

Thats one of the greatest joys I know, to

lead someone into a saving knowledge of Jesus.

I had a conversation the oth-er day that tracks with a fa-mous biblical story. A young dad, whos been attending our church, came to see me. We had a great time getting to know each other for a few minutes. The conversation moved in a deeper direction as we began to talk some about church. He had a previous church experience that had been engaging and mean-ingful for him, but hed come to the point where he knew he needed more than just religion. So we moved to yet a deeper level and began to talk about Je-sus, and how He brings real life to everyone who trusts in Him.

Then, in one of those delightful moments that always bring a

  • 3Bring someone with you who may be struggling or tired or drained and in need of a touch from the Lord. You and they will be blessed!

Finally, note elsewhere in this issue of the Signal that our fall schedule begins Wednesday night, Au-gust 19. Children jump right into their fall ministry called Wired, and students have Encounter 431. For adults, we focus on personal encouragement through a ministry we call Discipleship GroupsD-groups, for short. Theres a great lineup you can connect with for the first few weeks of the fall, and I want to give you a special invitation to connect with whatever group works for you. You can contact the church office to register, or just show up the first night.

    See you Sunday!

    Pastor Mike

Are you a new member or a visitor considering church membership here at LBC? Then join us on Sunday, September 13 for Dinner with the Pastor! This informal dinner will give you a chance to get to know our pastor and staff, as well as give us a chance to get to know you. Dinner will be provided for you and your family, and yes, there is Wee Care available for children by reservation only. To register or learn more, email [email protected] or call the main church office at 803.359.4146.

  • 4Random Acts of KindnessOn August 9th, we are challenging our kids to end their summer by doing one random act of kindness every day for five days! After church, well have stations set up in the Fellowship Hall, and kids will be able to put together their supplies for the week.

Random acts of kindness may include things like

Decorating a flower pot, planting a flower and delivering it to a senior adult

Making a goodie bag for a public servant (police office, fireman, nurse, etc.) and delivering it

Creating a coupon to help a neighbor with a project like yard work or taking out their trash

Kids will be challenged to share their photos for each of the five days using the hashtag #lexkidsserve.

Those kids who complete all five days will be entered into a drawing for an iPod Nano!

On Tailgate Sunday, September 6, there will be no Sunday School. Wee Care will be provided for ages birth through five during the 9 a.m. worship service, then families will eat together at 10:30.

Join with us!We want our kids to see God! We can create exciting environments, plan relevant, meaningful lessons and plan ways to partner with parents. The necessary component, though, are team members who desire to invest in the next generation. To serve, email [email protected].

The most valuable resource you have to help people see God are the people in your church who know God Lead Small Culture

  • 6Student Ministry Families, With summer coming to a close, there are a couple things you need to know heading into the new school year: LBCs Next Generation Ministry is hosting our first ever Open House on Sunday, August 9 from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Family Life Center. At the Open House, parents and students will have the chance to enjoy a pig-pickin, play games, fellowship and have the chance to meet your son or daughters adult leaders for the coming year. Mark your calendar and make sure to get to this Open House! Promotion Sunday is August 16, and this is the Sunday that your child or student will be moving into their new small groups. Make sure your student is at church that Sunday to enjoy this exciting transition. Core Ministry: If you have a student that is interested in joining our student leadership team, Core, email Daniel Walker at [email protected]. We are doing a Core Carowinds trip on August 6 and an all-day leadership training on August 8. Encounter 431 starts back on Wednesday night, August 19. All middle and high school students are invited to join us for worship, fellowship and small groups. We start at 6 p.m. in the FLC and finish up at 7:30 p.m. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to send me an email any time at [email protected].

  • 7From Entitlement to Making Much of GodThe battle for entitlement. We all face it. We all feel like were owed something or something is due to us because of who we are. Marketing geniuses even strategize their products to this way of thinking: you deserve this _______, ______ is what you are missing, Your way, right away. Even culture today says, if it feels good, do it. Entitlement is truly a belief system in how one lives out their life. In an entitlement world, everything is about you. We see this in Jacobs life.

Jacob felt like he deserved his fathers blessing and birthright that was rightfully due to Esau, so he tricked his father and stole it. By Jacob thinking so highly of himself, he tried to justify his own actions. In serval acts of defiance, Jacob rewrote the code that he chose to live his life by. Heres the truth: entitlement can be fed or starved. If anyone understood this its John the Baptist. In John 1:6-8, it states Johns role, which was to be a witness of the light but not to be confused with the light for he is not the light. John Piper says it this way, our witness is a great necessity, but our witness is not great. John the Baptist said that he was not the Christ. The perfect illustration that John the Baptist gave is when he describes the scene at the wedding in John 3:28-30. He states that hes simply a friend at the wedding, and that all of the focus and emphasis is on the groom and the bride.

Last spring I was in an outdoor wedding for a friend as a groomsman. Sometime during the ceremony, something went wrong with the sound, which had been strategically placed behind some bushes that the groomsmen were standing in front of. All of a sudden, I hear a rustling in the bushes behind me. Im thinking its a squirrel, possum, raccoon, or my biggest fear in life, a snake. I turn to look and its the guy whos playing music for the wedding, crouched down behind the bushes, adjusting the sound equipment. When he saw that I was looking at him, we both almost completely lost it and busted out laughing because of the awkward timing of seeing him there. As I looked back at the ceremony, most, if not all of the people hadnt even noticed. All their focus was on the bride and groom. Just like John, I realized that the musician and I were just simply friends at the wedding. Then John says this, He must increase, but I must decrease. You see, John knew his role; he was simply here to be a witness of all that Jesus had done and was going to do. The same is true with us. As we move into another year in the student ministry, let me leave you with some questions to think on.

How do we move from entitlement to making much of God? How do we feed entitlement? How do we starve entitlement? Who do you think you are? Who do you think God is? What would this student ministry look like if this became true about us: He must increase, but I must decrease.

Fall D Groups Begin Wednesday, August 19

at 6:15 p.m.D Groups (short for Discipleship Groups) are a way to connect intentionally with other believers and grow together through Bible study and fellowship. We are excited to begin four new D Groups, as well as a new pastoral Bible study this month. These groups will each meet on Wednesdays at 6:15 p.m. We will begin a new group of different classes September 30 (that information will be in the next issue of The Signal). Heres what we have for you this fall:

The Progress of Redemption ChapelDon Howell The story of Gods redemptive love as shown throughout the Bible. Don is a professor of New Testament and Greek at Columbia International University. Before coming to Columbia, he served with OMF International in Japan from 1979 until 1994 as a church planter and theological educator. He has taught in Latin America, Eastern Europe, China and Micronesia and has been Research Fellow at Tyndale House (Cambridge, UK) three times. His books include Servants of the Servant and The Passion of the Servant. He is also an ordained Baptist minister- we are thrilled to welcome Don to LBC for this study!

(Book $7)

Radical Room CHB 202Jerry Freeman Take a transforming journey in authentic discipleship. As the pastor of a large and wealthy congregation, David Platt began to see a discrepancy between the reality of his church and the way Jesus said His followers lived. (Book $9)

The Way of the Master Room CHB 201Carrie Fudge Have you ever wanted to witness to someone, but your fears got in the way? This study will focus on how to effectively convey the gospel to others. Youll learn to bypass the place of argument in those you are witnessing to and reach them on a conscious level. Join us for this study and become an effective witness for the Kingdom! (Book $6)

Boundaries in Marriage Room CHB 204Chris Hix Theyre at the forefront of todays Christian counseling movement, and now Drs. Cloud and Townsend help guide couples. Get Them to Jesus

I have always been enthralled by interesting sub-stories and personalities in the Bibles. One such story that has already interested me is about the apostle Philip. In the Gospel of John, we find Philip soon after meeting Jesus. He rushed to find his brother, Nathaniel, to tell him We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, wrote. After Nathaniel asked Philip about what good could come from Nazareth, Philips response was beautiful and eloquent. He simply told Nathaniel, Come and see. Philip probably had no idea what the next three years of following Jesus would entail, but he did know one thing: he had to get his brother to Jesus.

Unfortunately, Philip, just like us sometimes, lost sight of this desire to get those around him to Jesus. However, Jesus reminded him through the witness of another apostle, Andrew. Faced with a hungry crowd at the end of a long day, Philip gave a very pragmatic response to Jesus about what it would take to feed a crowd of over 5,000 people. Philip told Jesus that even eight months wages couldnt feed that many people. Then up steps Andrew with a boy and his dinner. You see Andrew remembered what Philip had forgotten. He didnt know what Christ would do with a few measly fish and loaves of bread. However, one thing was absolutely certain to Andrew. He had to get this little boy to Jesus.

As God is leading us to great things locally, nationally, and internationally, may our motivation always be the same as Philip and Andrew. As the Holy Spirit intersects our lives with others, may our heartfelt desire be to always, first and foremost, get them to Jesus.

    August Missions Focus:

Wow, August means back to school! And back to school means that we prayerfully consider how God wants us to impact our local schools for Him:

School Supply Drive: Throughout August, our Next Genera-tion Ministry will be collecting much-need supplies for our partner schools. A collection area and a list of supplies is available in the LBC foyer.

School Time Bible: Soon our wonderful School Time Bible volunteers will be teaching children across our area the won-drous story of God and His love for us.

Many opportunities are also available to participate with our local schools as mentors and partners. If you would like know about any of the ways that you can impact our schools, please contact John Wright at 803.996.8836 or via email at [email protected].

Our Families of Hope ministry continues to bless families who are adopting or fostering children, as well as those considering becoming adoptive or foster parents. Families of Hope meets monthly and their next meeting is on Wednesday, August 19 in Room CHB 201. Additionally, Families of Hope is continuing to collect new and gently used childrens clothes and other items to assist new foster families. For more information, email [email protected].

We ask you to continue filling those blue boxes in your Sunday School classes and all around the LBC campus as we help Lexington Interfaith Community Services (LICS), especially during the summer months. The need is great for food items during this time of year.
