WELCOME to theSignal

From the PastorThat principle holds true for your church family. What better time to connect with a Sunday School class? Or find a ministry and plug into it as a volunteer? To start a regular and systematic plan of giving? The New Year holds great promise for those who take their walk with Jesus seriously.

I’ll be preaching a series of ser-mons in January that I pray will bless not just your month but your entire year. It’s called, “Encountering Jesus” and fo-cuses on the encounters sever-al people in the Bible had with Jesus, and the life-changing im-pact that resulted from those encounters. There are lots of ways our secular culture tells us we can change our lives—lose weight, find a new job, save more money, get a degree, fix your marriage. And all those things may be what you need to do—in fact, some of us intend to ac-complish just those things in the New Year! But only an encounter with Jesus can get at the deep-er heart issues that lead to a changed life. I hope you’ll plan to be with us every Sunday in Jan-uary. Bring someone with you

who needs to encounter Jesus! Elsewhere in this issue of the Signal you’ll see the new time for supper on Wednesday nights starting in January. This later time for supper will allow for those of you who have longer times to drive in from work to still make it in time to eat with your church family. You’ll also notice some new opportunities for spe-

cial Bible stud-ies and groups on Wednesday nights starting at the same time. We want

Wednesday nights to be a great time for our church fam-ily to connect with one another through groups, studies or may-be just drinking coffee around a table and catching up on each other’s lives. Of course, our chil-dren and student ministries will be going on as well. I hope you’ll take some time this month and drop in and hang out some with us.

Looking forward to a great month with you!

Pastor Mike

“The New year is also a great time to pay more attention to the things

of the Spirit.”The New Year is a time of fresh beginnings, resolutions, renewed gym memberships and the sense that if there’s something in your life that needs improv-ing, now’s the best time to do it.

The New Year is also a great time to pay more attention to the things of the Spirit. For some, that might mean a Bi-ble-reading plan that will carry you through the whole year. For others, a fresh focus on prayer. And for others, a greater com-mitment to witnessing to your friends and family. Whatever the Lord might lead you to do, this is the time to step out in faith and do it. Commitments you make right now have the power to alter the trajectory of your life.

You can now send a simple text message to give! Donors can text @lbc to 52014. A number representing a dollar amount can be included in the text. You will be prompted for an amount if you do not enter one. For example, texting @lbc 25 makes a $25 donation. After the first text, the donor receives a text with a link to use to enter contact and credit card information. You only have to do this on the first text donation. For each text donation you will receive a “thank you” text and “thank you” email which also serves as your receipt. Thank you for your faithful giving to the Kingdom!

Happy New Year!

It is so hard to believe that it is 2016. I think the saying, “time flies when you are having fun” certainly applies to children’s ministry!

I hope that as this New Year begins, that we will take the time to reset, rethink and reprioritize the important things in life.

Psalm 90:12 states, “Teach us to number our days and recognize how few they are; help us to spend them as we should.”

As life slows down, just a little, remember to make time for the important things-the things in life that will have an eternal impact: telling people about Jesus, spending time in God’s Word, teaching your children about how much God loves them, serving others, being kind, being patient, spending time with loved ones and letting the love of Christ shine in a dark world- these are things that we need to make a priority. I want to challenge you, even if you don’t make any other resolutions this year, to include one, two or all of these things so that the Kingdom of God may grow, that more people will come to know Jesus, and that lives will be changed internally and eternally, forever.

Student Ministry Families, Happy New Year! I hope your family had a blessed holiday season. 2015 was a special year in the Student Ministry. We prayed at the start of 2015 that our students would know God and desire to seek after Him daily. God was faithful in answering our requests. We saw many students meet Jesus through our small groups, summer camps, Bible studies and Encounter 431. We saw more than 40 Core students serving the church weekly in a number of different capacities. Our LBC Students have started Bible studies in their schools and are in leadership positions in weekly outreach events. Every week we see new faces and hear new stories of students getting plugged into our ministry. I am thankful for a church who supports students and prays weekly for their success and favor. We can’t wait for 2016 to get started. Just like everything else when it comes to students, we are going to hit the ground running in the new year. The winter/spring months offer a number of great opportunities for students. Our Core students are headed to Gatlinburg, TN for a leadership conference in January. February is the month for the Chocolate Festival and Wing Night! We can’t wait for Ignite 2016, which is our spring discipleship weekend. We are headed back to Journey Camp this June, which has been a game-changer for our students. This is just a taste of what students are going to experience in 2016. Parents: I want to encourage you with a few things. Every year I talk with parents who are struggling to get their kids connected into this ministry. I’d say that 95% of the time, the reason for this disconnect is outside distraction. Families are pulled in 100 different ways between sports, dance, choir, school and more. I don’t envy any of the choices that are being made of where to spend your time, energy and resources. I do know that with the students who are connected into this ministry, it’s directly connected with their involvement in this ministry. If we see your student once a week, it is going to be hard for them to find consistency. If they aren’t plugged into a small group, it’s going to be hard for them to find accountability and encouragement. In 2016, make it a point to get your students involved here at LBC. We have a parents meeting on January 10 at 4 p.m. Parents will be informed on the happenings of the new year, and be given the opportunity to sign up their students for camps and retreats in 2016. We encourage all families to be represented at this meeting. Blessings, Ian Geimer

PARENTS’ MEETINGSunday, January 10

4 p.m.The City (Upstairs, FLC)

Fulfilling the Great CommissionI recently read an article about the resettlement of refugees in our country and in other coun-tries. The author of the article pointed out that for so long missionaries have tried, with ex-hausted resources to get into close countries to reach the Muslim community. Over a long period of time these efforts have had very little success compared to the task at hand. Fast forward to today and you literally have Muslim’s escaping to countries where we can share the gospel of Christ freely. The author’s lasting question, that stood out the most in my mind was this, “What is God up to?”

When I think about our students, where we’ve been and where we’ve come from I can reflect on so much. I can see the faces of student’s that I’ve had the honor to baptize after they have professed Jesus as Lord and Savior of their lives. I can see students who’ve invited their friends, who had never heard of Noah and the biblical flood, put their trust in Jesus Christ for the first time in their lives. I hear about a 7th grade girl and an 8th grade girl starting two different bible studies at their schools. I hear about a family in our student ministry who’s opened its home one night a week for a bible study for neighbors and friends. I also hear about a high school guy and a middle school guy who are launching a bible study for middle school guys. This unscripted movement is happening. As a leader in this ministry sometimes I even sit back and wonder, “What is God up to?” I’m bless-ed to be a part of this ride and excited for the journey that’s ahead! Hold on! Daniel Walker

LBC SENIOR ADULTS& Congregational Care

Senior Adult Cornerstone Lunch

Beginning in January, we will meet the first Thursday of every month for a time of Bible study and fellowship. I’m looking forward to opening God’s Word with you each month! During the months of January, February, March and April, we are going to take a deeper look into the core values of Lexington Baptist Church and how they tie into our mission: to make disciples of Jesus Christ in Lexington and around the world. We will gather for Bible study in the Fellowship Hall at 11 a.m.and lunch will follow. Mark your calendars to be with us on January 7.

Holiday Blessings

I want to let you know about some exciting ways our older adults served others this past holiday season. They blessed 70 children who live at Connie Maxwell Children’s Home with gift cards for Christmas. We collected over 200 pairs of socks for area homeless. Fifteen traveled to Charlotte to help efforts with Operation Christmas Child. Seven Sunday School classes organized them-selves to provide and deliver 128 food boxes to families from Gilbert Primary School, Pine View Elementary School, Jubilee Academy and right here in Lexington! There are other individuals who made Christmas special for others who wish to remain anonymous, but what a blessing it is to know that our older adults understand that God has called them to serve-- they are doing what they can to respond to the call. As we begin this new year, my prayer is that we all find ways to use the gifts and talents God has given each of us to make a difference in the life of someone else in the name of Jesus. If you need help discovering what you could do, call our office so we can sit and dream together.

Blessings!

EQUIPPING MINISTRYHelping you to become fully-devoted disciples of Jesus

The Big CatchAs a young child, I used to spend March through October either on Lake Greenwood or going to my grandparents’ house to go fishing in the local reservoir. My grandfather believed the best fishing was between 5 and 7 a.m. That meant we got up early to eat breakfast and then grabbed some chicken livers for bait and a pair of my grandmother’s stocking hose. The stocking hose were used to hold the chicken livers on the hook. My grandfather was always in search of the rumored big 60-pound catfish. As we rode to our favorite fishing spot, he would always say, “maybe today is the day we make the big catch.” Well, we never did catch the big fish, but we did catch our share. You see, as my grandfather got older, he believed his purpose was to catch that big fish. As we turn our calendars to 2016, I wonder if we understand our purpose. Do we understand what it is we should be doing to make the “big catch?”

In 2016 what should we do?

1. Let Go and Let God: In Luke 5 the disciples have been out fishing all night. They had an awful night fishing. Jesus came on the scene and made a request of the disciples to put the nets down on the other side of the boat. Simon Peter replied to Jesus, “Master, we have worked hard all night and caught nothing, but I will do as you say and let down the nets for a catch.” Peter is apprehensive, and by his words, we can tell what he is really saying is, “Why? Why do I need to do this, I’ve already tried and it didn’t work.” Here is the truth for us: when God is with us and He clearly tells us to do something, we have to let go and trust Him.

2. Find Partners in Ministry: When Peter and his friends began to pull the nets in, they realized they couldn’t do it by themselves, so they called for others to come and help them with the big catch. This is a great principle in church work. We shouldn’t try and do it alone. We need to get others to join us in the work and together we can work to achieve the BIG catch.

3. Repent: When Peter saw this, the Bible says he fell to his knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man.” It was Peter’s unbelief that caused him to question Jesus from the beginning. As we begin 2016, how many of us truly need to repent of our unbelief?

4. Go after the BIG catch: Jesus proclaimed to Peter, James and John, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will catch men.” The BIG catch occurs when we are willing to let go and let God be God in our lives, when we are willing to find ministry partners, when we are willing to repent and when we are willing to go.

D Groups begin January 6 and run through February 10, 2016 on

Wednesdays at 6:15 p.m.

D Groups (short for Discipleship Groups) are a way to connect intentionally with other believers and grow together through Bible study and fellowship. We are excited to begin four new D Groups, as well as a new pastoral Bible study this month. These groups will each meet on Wednesdays at 6:15 p.m.

The Journey to the Cross ChapelLed by Mark Owens Come as we go on the journey of a lifetime. This Bible study will lead us on the journey our Lord took to the cross. This study will cover Jesus’ life from birth to resurrection.

Multiply Room CHB 203Led by John Wright A simple, practical, Biblical, helpful and personal tool for disciples of Jesus who want to make disciples of Jesus. Francis Chan brings to life the real meaning of being a disciple of Jesus Christ. Book cost: $8.

Follow Me Room CHB 202Led by Jerry Freeman When Jesus says, “Follow Me,” it’s not an invitation to say a prayer, it’s a summons to lose our lives. In this much-anticipated follow-up to Radical, Pastor David Platt challenges the traditions of cultural Christianity and reintroduces us to Jesus and His most simple request: Follow Me. Book cost: $13.

The Way of the Master Room CHB 201Led by Dennis & Carrie Fudge The Way of the Master will teach you to overcome your fears by using an effective way to make the gospel make sense. You don’t need to be an expert in apologetics. Instead, you’ll learn the forgotten Biblical principle of bypassing the intellect (the place of argument) and speaking di-rectly to the conscience (the place of the knowledge of right and wrong) — the way Jesus did.) Book cost: $5.

Basic Spanish Room CHB 208Led by Sarah Hulls Have you ever wanted to learn another language? Well, this is your chance to learn basic Spanish and how to communicate the Gospel message around the world and right here at home.

New Wednesday Night Supper Times

In order to better serve our church family, many of whom commute to church on Wednesday nights di-rectly from work in downtown Columbia, we are excited to announce our new dinner time for 2016 will be from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. All other activity times will remain the same, but we hope that this additional time will allow for more of our church family to attend our Wednesday evening meals. This change will be effective in January of 2016.

“Great is the Lord! He is most worthy of praise! No one can measure His greatness.”

- Psalm 145:3

As we look forward to the new year and the opportunities that God is giving us to share the love of Jesus with others, we also want to be intentional in taking this opportunity to give Him praise for the ways that we saw Him at work in 2015.

I have collected messages of praise from LBC members who have served others through LBC ministries and mission trips. Please join us in giving God praise for allowing us to be a part of what He is doing in the world to draw people to Himself.

“In August, in the midst of record high temperatures, ARISE workers were able to show God’s love to a single woman who

was sleeping on a mattress that was laying on the floor of a mobile home that had very little air conditioning. We left her with a cooler home, and one in which she no longer had to sleep on the floor.”

-Marc Barnes, ARISE Ministry

“We give praise to our God for the ministry of mission in LBC. The many who go on mission trips carrying the name to those who haven’t heard of Jesus. We praise

God for your participation in the ministry of Christmas Prison Packets. Many may hear of the name of Jesus for

the first time through receiving a packet.”

-Elaine Huggins, Women on Mission

“With 21 Volunteers (and alot of little hands), over 85 hours of collecting and packing...we received 13,585 Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes in nine days and filled almost three 28-foot trailers! Of those boxes, 660 were collected from Lexington Baptist.”

-Jennifer Steele, Operation Christmas Child

13

Five years ago, there were no programs in District 1 in which schools released students during the school day to study the Bible. Now there are seven. Four of the programs have been started under the influence of LBC and have resulted in about 200 students hearing God’s Word, with many of them receiving Christ as Savior.

-Dick McCloy, School Time Bible

“When Carl came to prison approximately 40 years ago, he could not read or write... he was lost. God reached down from heaven one day and saved Carl and transformed his life. He was recently accepted into the Columbia International University Prison Initiative, Undergraduate Studies, Kirkland Campus and we give God all the glory.”

-Phil Stallings, Prison Ministry

“What a blessing it was to listen to, pray for, encourage and support so many of our ladies serving on the field all over Central Asia like Katie, Karen and Sheri, living and raising children in a war torn area, wanting to be strong in faith and courage, but realistic about the dangers their families faced every day to share Christ in such darkness. They were so touched that our fellowship had sent five women just to pray for and serve them during the conference. But of course, they served us so much more than we did them.”

-Danise Stokeld, January IMB Ladies Conference
