PREFACE
This
study began
as a
treatment
f
a
large
hoard of silver
coins
of
Cappadocia
extending
from he
reign
of
Vespasian
to that
of
Corn-
modus. As
study
of the hoard
proceeded
t
became evident that its
implications
orthe mint
of Caesarea were
considerable,
nd a
secon-
dary objective
became feasible: he
presentation
f a
conspectus
f the
silver
coins of Caesarea in
Cappadocia
from
the
reign
of
Vespasian
through
hat of
Commodus.
The
study
s limited n two
ways.
The
coppercoinage
s omitted
or,
the
types part,
there s little
direct
onnection
etween he
silver nd
the
baser coins
of
Caesarea. The silver
coinage
s continuous nd sta-
ble,
while the
copper
s
sporadic
and of
unpredictable
tandard. The
copper
issues are
often
asynchronous
nd
frequently, ominally
t
least,
struck n
local
authority;
while,
t will be
argued, duringmany
periods he silver oinage s directly onnectedwith, fnotproduced t,
the
imperial
mint at Rome.
The
chronological
imitations re
dictated
mainly by
the hoard
itself. Its
evidence
conveniently
buts
that
assembled
and
graciously
made
available)
by
Dr. Andrew
Burnettof
the British
Museum,
now
incorporated
n
Roman
Provincial
Coinage
1.
On the one hand the
coinage
of the
subsequent
period
s so
fullyrepresented
n the
hoard
that the
need for
more xtensive
urvey
f
material
preserved
world-
wide
has been
obviated;
on the
other,
o extend
the
study beyond
the
terminus f the
hoard would
have involved
many
years' delay
in treat-
ing the mostdifficult eriodof Caesarea's silvercoinage.
The
work s
divided into two
parts.
The first s
a
straightforward
and rather
pare
catalogue
of coins from
he
portion
f the
hoard exa-
mined t the
ANS.
As
appropriate,
ie
linkage
o a
second
part
of
the
hoard,
ecorded
y
Dr.
WolframWeiserof
Cologne,
s noted.
Commen-
taries on the
coinage
of the
several
reigns
s well
as sections
dealing
with
general
problems
referboth
to the
hoard
catalogue
and to
the
conspectus,
which onsists f
a
summary
f the known
ilver
oinage
of
the
mint. It
rests
primarily
thoughby
no means
exclusively, articu-
larlyfor hesmallerdenominations) n theevidence of thehoard, but
some
differencesf
presentation,
ecessitated
by
an
attempt
to illus-
trate
internaldie
linkage
in
the
hoard
catalogue,
will
be
noted.

X Preface
This
publication
has been
long
n
preparation
ut
it
would not have
been
possible
at all without the
cooperation
of
many
individuals.
During
the brief
period
that the hoard
was
available
for
xamination
and
recording,my colleagues
Dr. CarmenArnold-Biucchi nd Dr. Alan
M. Stahl
dropped
other
projects
o assist
n the
sorting
nd
identifica-
tion of
dies,
and
CarmenArnold-Biucchi ontinued
o be involved n
study
of
the hoard afterthe
coins
left the
premises.
To Alan
Stahl
belongsthe creditfordiscovery fthe bilingualTrajanic didrachms.
On
very
short
notice,
Robert J.
Myers
donated
his
time, abor,
and
materials o create
the
photographic
ecord
which
permitted
more ei-
surely
study,
and which has been used
for the
plates.
I
have also
profited
rom iscussion
with and
assistance
fromAndrewM. Burnett
and
Dr. Ian A. Carradiceof
the British
Museum,London,
Dr. Michel
Amandry
f the Cabinet
des

of the Ashmolean

provided
casts on
shortnotice. Richard G. McAleeof Baltimore hared nformationnd

the
final

The
manuscript
was
brought ogether
n
final
form
during my
membership
n the
Institute for Advanced
Study,
Princeton,
o which
I am
profoundly
rateful
or
the
opportunity
o
pursue
this and
other
projects.
The
principal
credit
for this
work, however,
belongs
to the late
Frances
M.
Schwartz.
She
was
present
t
the museum
whenthe hoard
was first
rought
n
for
xamination,
nd
undertook,
with
characteris-
tic enthusiasmnd care, the die comparison or hemajorportion f t
(late
Trajan
and
Commodus).
She coordinated
he
photography,
main-
tained
necessary
ecords,
nd
in
general
kept
the
project
live
untilher
final
llness. Her
death
on
July
16,
1984,
virtually
alted
work,
which
has
proceeded
n fits nd
starts ver since.
Although
not
a wordof
the
text was
written
y
her,
she
provided
the
impetus
for ts
completion
and
deserves
he ion's
share of
the
credit
or
ny
contribution
t makes
to our
understanding
f Roman
provincial
minting,
without
f
course
being
responsible
or
any
errors
r
oversights.
This is a belated
and
inadequatememorial o herdiligence, erdevotion, nd ourfriendship.

INTRODUCTION
In
May
1983 a lot of over
900 silver coins was
presented
t the
AmericanNumismatic ocietyfor xamination. It consisted, with he
exception
f
a
single
Domitianic

f didrachms

attributed o
Caesarea in
Cappadocia.
The relative wear
of the
coins
was
consistentwith

de-

by

ADDITIONAL NOTE 1995
Since this
manuscript
was sent to

therehave been two
signifi-
cant additionsto the bibliography f the periodunder discussion. In
the
first,
Kevin
Butcher takes
up
the
question
of overvaluation
of
provincial
ilver raised
by
D. R. Walker. He
employs
Walker's
own
analyses
of denarii and
Cappadocian
silver,
nd concludes that
if
the
Caesarean
drachm
s
viewed as the
equivalent
of a Rhodian drachm
(i.e.
3/4
of a
denarius),
there s
no overvaluation t all.1
