Introduction Great personnalities never stop surprising us. Mrs Dina Vierny belongs to this category of outstanding people. Dina Vierny - a lady of the XXth century – was born by the Black Sea during the Russian Revolution in 1919. Very soon, her family fled Staline and Dina never stopped fighting against this regime with ever renewed energy all along her life. In Paris, her city of adoption, she meets, at the age of 14, the left wing liberal intellectuals and very young she denounces the horror of the Iron Man’s regime. Soon she meets poets and writers who introduce her to the major 20th century designers. In 1934, Dina Vierny meets Aristide Maillol who becomes her pygmalion. Dina Vierny is only 15 years old and although the artist is 73, a fruitful collaboration begins. Dina Vierny is a choice model. Cultivated, very free as regards nudity and avant-gardiste towards Art. Maillol speaks highly of the merits of his model and introduces her to his friends Matisse and Bonnard, who also use her as a model for her shapes. During the war, she continues her struggle for « Art » in contact with André Breton’s surrealists in Marseilles, and for « freedom » by helping resistants to flee to Spain. She is arrested and jailed for six months in Fresnes before being released thanks to the mediation of Maillol. In 1947, on the advice of Matisse, Dina Vierny opens her own Art Gallery 36, rue Jacob, where she introduces russian artists such as Serge Poliakoff, members of the Cobra Group or photographers. When in 1964 the donation of Maillol’s imposing sculptures are installed in the Tuileries Gardens by Malraux, Minister of Culture, Dina decides to launch her Foundation project. Dina Vierny went through many a trial in her life which could have drowned many a one, but the trial of her life, her great project, for her posterity, was the launch of the Dina Vierny Foundation – the Maillol Museum – rue de Grenelle in Paris. Naturally optimistic, a fighter, this lady never hesitated to say that this project was « superhuman, probably impossible ….. 1» ; But she finalized it. She sacrificed much time and energy together with her children Olivier and Bernard, to impose as from 1995, what is today, in Paris, a worldwide and renowned Modern Art Museum. Dina Vierny knew Renoir and Van Dogen. She was a friend of Picasso and Dufy. She also met other artists such as Vuillard, Duchamp-Villon, Saint Exupéry, Antonin Arthaud, Jean Pougny and all those she displayed in her Gallery. Behind this very dertermined lady, hid a persevering collector full of wisdom and love. « I have been collecting since the age of fourteen. My love and my understanding of all objects come from the surrealists. They opened my eyes on many things. It is the understanding of dreams and I have become a talented dreamer. So it is evident I would get on so well with the surrealists. I am interested and attracted to unusual objects. The strange object which is out of the ordinary, and which cannot be used for anything, is for me ! I also have beautiful objects that are useful. For me, objects are characters, I consider them like human beings she used to say. At 14 it started with antiques, then carriages, autographs and even stain-glass windows, but the doll’s world is probably the collection which best reveals the part of sensitivity which haunted Dina Vierny. « There is no single object that has not been reproduced in miniature for dolls » said Dina Vierny. From the middle ages castle to the restaurant « Chez Maxim’s », from a church, to kitchens, to groceries, gardens, and drawing rooms, full of wooden dolls, mignonnettes and beautiful parisians dolls, in the middle of horse-drawn coaches and animals, nothing is missing in the ‘city’ she collected. Behind this magnificent collection, look for the tender far-away moments of evasion of this little lady whose great personnality defended both freedom and intelligence.

Foreword Dina Vierny was an habitué of the ‘Galerie de Chartres’. Collectors will remember her enthusiasm when she participated in auctions specialising in dolls, automata and toys. Her country house was half an hour’s drive away from Chartres. She was a friend I learnt a lot from. I can say this because she said the same thing. She was a lady of strong character but she was a very good person. Curious of everything, she owned a collection of stained glass windows which she entrusted to us a year ago, just before passing away. I was a witness to the difficulties, she and her two sons had to surmount to enable her foundation to open: the Maillol Museum. Without the backing of Banks or state funding, she was obliged to sell several collections during the 1995 years, of which a doll and a baby-doll collection. A doll’s Museum should have coexisted in the Maillol Museum ‘s courtyard behind Bouchardon’s « Four Seasons Fountain ». What a shame France never managed to have this French Dolls’ Museum. And yet, she knew how to defend dolls. I remember a lunch with various experts, notably old and modern paintings experts who ‘laughed’ and mocked doll collectors. She cut them short as she knew so well how to…. I don’t remember the exact words, but I still have the music of the words in mind and the words could have been : « What I wish to show is that a doll is a piece of art. It took me years and years to understand what it was all about thanks to auctions in France, Germany, and England where I discovered real treasures. Toys have always accompanied mankind. A toy is a social witness. It can also be a real sculpture, chiselled, painted and dressed with love and sometimes with genius. I was the first to speak about it and show it in museum exhibitions. That is in museums other than those specialised in dolls. No, a doll can be sublime, a pure work of art. And I acquired a collection recognised as the most beautiful in the world, including some very very rare objects but above all of great artistic beauty. The Rembrandt and Renoir of dolls ! And I was heartsick when I had to disperse this collection. Over a thousand dolls ! 2» But she had kept her secret garden: « her infinitely small ones » : « I kept all the tiny subjects I started out with » Because there is a beginning to everything. One doesn’t jump immediately into a collection, one starts due to all sorts of events, I still possess a whole town of dolls ». In her small flat just above the Museum, she had composed fascinating scenes of life by organizing these thousands of accessories in specialy designed cupboards under the roof, on the walls, or on haphazard shelves that all finally invaded Dina Vierny’s intimate universe. On either side of her bed, just behind her stacks of books, the doll’s kingdom was king. We are speaking of over 20 000 objects, furniture, dolls houses, small details she had collected one by one so as to recreate in the three rooms next to her bedroom and her office of the rue de Grenelle, her town, her universe of the infinitely small… Each unit describes a fabulous period of her life : the woodwork was certainly that of her uncle’s at Odessa ; the kitchen reminds one of Aristide Maillol’s kitchen in his Mas (Farmhouse) in Banuyls ; her most exceptional item « Chez Maxims’ » with its drawing rooms, kitchens, carriages, all remind us of her exquisite taste and her incomparable laugh. Finally, a pair of gilded bronze and glass chandeliers underline her taste for quality, a miniature garlic clove she had spotted and bought in one of our auctions over twenty years ago reminds us of her curiosity and the numerous little silex stones she used to pick up and paint to create pieces of meat remind us that she used to frequent the parisians surrealists. This « town » will now merge into other collections. The future happy owners will remember that they all have a soul, from the smallest piece to the most expensive. The empty rooms of the flat will from now on shelter the Maillol Museum’s very rich documentation. May her two sons, Olivier and Bertrand, be gratefully thanked for their trust and friendship in allowing me to disperse the most intimate collection of Dina Vierny : their mother.
