FITNESS FACTS
RISING UP!
Joseph Libera, PT, DPT, MPH, MBA, GCS, CEEAA, CSCS
Exercise Expert for Aging Adults — [email protected]
My mother likes to tell the story about
the time she fell in the basement while
doing the laundry. She called out to my
father who arrived with a pillow and
blanket to rescue her, “Come on upstairs
when you’re feeling better” he told her.
A popular study in 2012 proposed that
the ability to rise from the floor to stand-
ing predicted all-cause mortality (Brito et
al., 2014). Simply put, the greater your
muscular strength the greater chance of surviving – by a wide margin.
You can imagine how the muscle groups and movement patterns
involved in rising from the floor to standing are involved in everyday
life. Set aside bending down to pick up the grand-kids. How about
reaching under the table to fetch those pesky reading glasses? Bending
to grab the morning newspaper? Reaching down to grab that jar of
pickles on the lower shelf of the grocery?
Bending over while maintaining balance is a
critical movement pattern often related to fall-
ing. A fall with injuries may significantly de-
grade our quality of life and even shorten our
life (ES, TA, KL, & al, 2011).
Why are those bending and rising move-
ments so difficult? Three trends in aging are
calling us to the floor 1) a loss of muscle
strength, 2) a loss of muscle mass, and 3) our
nervous system’s ability to communicate and recruit resources for bal-
ance are slowing down (Tieland, Trouwborst, & Clark, 2018).
With a little effort we can provide a little more than a pillow and
blanket to get off the floor. Strengthening and reinforcing movement
patterns involved in floor to standing are important parts of SAIL and
AHOY classes. Twice weekly progressive strengthening exercises
(more challenging as strength improves), to the point of muscle fatigue
provides benefits including improving balance, and performance on ac-
tivities of daily living, slowing or reversing muscle loss related to aging,
preventing falls, and fighting diabetes, heart disease, osteoarthritis, and
chronic pain.
To learn more about floor to standing exercises visit any SAIL or
AHOY class at Smith Senior Center, or contact me at 336-684-0500.

TECH TALK
DON’T DROP YOUR GUARD
Bill Barrett ([email protected]), Computer Tech
Fall is just around the corner, and that means
that the holiday shopping season will soon be
upon us, and the cyber criminals will also be up-
on us trying to gain access to our personal infor-
mation online in any way possible.
The one thing that cyber criminals hope for is
that we will drop our guard just one time and our
curiosity will win out, and we will click on a link
or open an attachment in a strange email. If the
cyber-criminal is good, you won’t even know it
and your anti-virus software may not ever see it.
It seems that social media and Facebook friending are still the biggest
entry points for cyber criminals using malware and ransomware. Other
popular schemes are the emails that warn you that your email account is
over quota and you need to click a link for a fake email manager website
to fix it, or the fake invoice with delivery notice for something you didn’t
purchase. All of these schemes prey on your willingness to fix a problem
or correct a mistake, and with just one click, you’re in serious trouble.
Regardless of the major effort to address our desktop security expo-
sure, we are all exposed. We have state-level players in the game now, in-
cluding the State of NC Information Technology Department, which is
designed to increase our knowledge of cybersecurity and help us safeguard
our information. And still the rapidity that exploits are being disclosed to
the public, makes the old way of having a stable desktop for any length of
time way too risky.
I always recommend that you use Sandboxie software to protect your
computer when you’re on the internet, or opening a PDF or video file, as
it keeps everything in a secure container. This also means that the cyber
intruders are kept in that container until you close your browser or termi-
nate Sandboxie. I never go on the internet without being in Sandboxie.
I also recommend completing the updates on your computer and soft-
ware, as well as always backing up your data. Most people ignore the up-
dates and patches notices because they don’t want to take the time to com-
plete them. Google, Mozilla and Microsoft constantly patch their soft-
ware. Windows 10 has added a few reminder features that will bug you to
take notice, which in this case is a good thing. Microsoft has a major up-
date coming this Fall as part of their biannual operating system updates.
This update will have several new features added to it.
All of these will help make it harder for cyber criminals to find your
information, hold it for ransom, and make you their newest victim. Stay
vigilant and don’t let your guard down.
