DAVID WEISS SCC GENERAL MANAGER

A LETTER FROM

Greetings members of Saugahatchee,

The first three months of me being your General Manager has been a challenge, to say the least.

The Covid-19 Virus has changed just about everything we do in our daily lives. Issues of members and employee’s safety has been paramount to myself and the Board.

Just a little information about your new General Manager. I bring 40 years of hospitality experience to the club. I have managed and owned restaurants in the Auburn area for over 20 years. I have run the Food and Beverage Program for Callaway Gardens and was the manager at the Montgomery County Club as of late. My experience and opportunities took me to Los Angeles, Napa Valley, Nashville and Auburn. I pride myself on being “hands on” and approachable and thrive and invite feedback from the members on how we can improve the club. I ask that you bring any ideas or thoughts directly to me so I may get them to the right people.

Some of the measures taken have been to move to “cafeteria” style serving lines, separation protections, dedicated cleansing of hard surface areas around the club, golf cart sanitation taking employee’s temperatures, encouragement of members and staff to wear masks when indoors, limiting the number of members at a table and the number of tables in the dining areas.

We have tried to think outside the box, by preparing to-go meals, barbequing on the weekends and the retail sale of alcohol, which has proven to be very successful to the club. We would like to thank all of the members that supported this endeavor.

Since I have arrived at the club, I have tried to focus on doing everything possible to create a great member experience. This means creating the culture and vision for the financial success of the club, continuous training of service staff, excelling in the quality of the presentation and taste of our Food and Beverage Program as well as upgrading our facilities when necessary. Most importantly I’m looking at what we do with a fresh set of eyes and listening to both the members and staff.

We have already established some exciting developments such as the golf course maintenance area and in the winter, we will begin modifications to our dining facilities. It is obvious that Saugahatchee Country Club has no rival in the quality of our golf course. During this pandemic we saw record rounds. The future of Saugahatchee excites me! It is my hope that you continue to enjoy and use the club.

As your new General Manager, I will continue to have three major objectives:

Safety

Awesome food and beverage experiences

And the best Golf in the South

Respectfully,Your General Manager,David A. Weiss

FROM THE GREEN COMMITTEEESAUGAHATCHEE COUNTRY CLUB

Dear Members,

The Green Committee met with the USGA Agronomy team at Saugahatchee on June 4, 2020 for our annual golf course review and assessment. To say we received a glowing critique would be quite an understatement. Dr. Steve Kammerer, Regional Director, explained that out of all the golf courses with mini-verde greens that the USGA visits in the Southeast Region (AL, FL, GA, LA, MS, NC, SC, TN, VA, WV & Puerto Rico), Saugahatchee Country Club in the Top 2 overall. Justin has done a fantastic job with our golf course and our putting surfaces and, if you have the opportunity, please compliment him and the staff for the hard work they have put in to make our course so fantastic. The full report from the USGA will soon be available in David Weiss's office if any member wishes to review it.

As all of you will remember, Saugahatchee is quite proud to be hosting the 2020 Alabama Golf Association State Amateur Championship at the end of July. We are in the process of preparing the golf course for this prestigious event and we want to provide the State's best amateurs with a true appreciation of what a wonderful golf course we have. In that regard, in the coming weeks, you will notice the implementation of a "first cut" in our fairways. Furthermore, the rough will be allowed to grow higher than normal and, as we come out of our green aerification period, you will also notice higher stimp meter lengths -- which means faster greens. We understand this will make our golf course much more challenging and, that some of you may not enjoy these conditions. Please be patient and understanding with our agronomy staff. We must prepare the course for "tournament conditions" and, naturally, this will increase the general difficulty of playing a round of golf at our club. These conditions are temporary and, we sincerely hope that you will view this set up as a challenge for a short period of time. After the championship, our course will return to a friendlier, more playable condition.

I hope all of you have noticed the progress we are making with the flower beds behind the 18th green. Lee has done a fantastic job of replacing our erosion walls (previously, railroad ties) with decorative rock and stone. We are also clearing out the old, overgrown greenery in those beds and replacing these areas with more vibrantly colored plants and flowers. This project will be fully completed before our Member-Guest tournament. Over the next several weeks, our crew will continue to "limb" low-hanging branches on the trees around the golf course and we will mulch these tree beds once the "limbing" projects are completed.

Finally, we would like to again ask that if you use a "pull cart" on our golf course that you DO NOT pull or roll those carts in between greenside bunkers and the putting surfaces. Your pull carts should never be within less than 10-15 yards of our championship greens. We appreciate your attention in this regard. We hope all of you have noticed just how wonderful the golf course is looking and playing currently and we encourage you to come out and play a round!

Sincerely,Travis R. Wisdom, Chairman, Saugahatchee Green Committee
