U Technology provides lighting for Rogers Communications

Rogers Communications is Canada’s largest and most dynamic telecommunication and media company with over $13 billion in annual revenue. The company believes that strong environmental stewardship is an important part of its business. Rogers Communications makes every effort to reduce its operational footprint in the areas of energy, paper and waste.

Recently, Rogers Communications wanted to improve the lighting and save on energy costs for its Calgary warehouse. After doing an online search of possible providers, Rogers Communications found the U Technology website and gave the team a call.

The Challenge

The primary challenge for Rogers Communications was to find a cost effective solution that provided better lighting within the warehouse facility. The lux reading (lux is a unit of illumination and is equal to one lumen per square metre) was too low - 129 lux in the loading area and less than 80 lux in the aisles.

The Solution

U Technology recommended upgrading the warehouse from metal halide and fluorescent lighting to high efficiency LED Linear Highbay lights. The highbay lights run at ambient temperature and therefore run cooler, making them last longer – as long as 200,000 hours or 20 years. Due to the lower operating temperature, Rogers Communications will benefit by having reduced HVAC costs within the building over both the winter and summer months.

The Results

Throughout the process, U Technology provided several recommendations and was able to optimize the lighting layout for the warehouse at the same time. With the new layout and highbay lights, the lux reading after installation resulted in a significant improvement: 263 lux in the loading area and 350 lux in the aisles – a 100% increase and a 300% increase, respectively.

In addition to better quality lighting, Rogers Communication realized a 58% decrease in energy usage resulting in an estimated 3.5 year payback period.

Rogers Communication made a long term investment in its warehouse that provides both energy savings and better lighting within its facility. Due to this positive experience, they have named U Technology a preferred vendor for LED lighting.
